The Webby Awards have announced that the 35-year-old Dominican-American comedian/television personality, whose real name is Joel Martinez, and his comedy partner Desus will be recognized with Webby Special Achievement Awards next week for their contributions to Internet culture.
The Kid Mero and Desus Nice will be presented with a Webby Special Achievement Award for their Showtime late-night talk show Desus & Mero, which will expand to two nights a week for a special summer run.
Desus and Mero reconnected online in the early days of Twitter, where they unleashed their potent personalities and found themselves kindred spirits. That led to stints on Complexand MTV, the Bodega Boys podcast, and a daily late-night show on Viceland. The duo continue to host their Bodega Boys podcast
The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences— which hands out the awards — will also honor Michael Douglas, Childish Gambino, Jimmy Fallon, Will Smith, Kesha and Spotifythis year.
Other Special Achievement honorees include Issa Rae, Glossier founder Emily Weiss, artist Tierra Whack, and host and creator Hasan Minhaj.
Hosted by actress and comedian Jenny Slate, the 23rd Annual Webby Awards will take place in New York City on Monday, May 13 at Cipriani Wall Street.
