Arturo Luís Soria Earns Obie Award for Performance in “Ni Mi Madre”

Arturo Luís Soria has landed the mother of all honors…

The Brazilian, Ecuadorian and Dominican American actor is among the recipients of the 66th Obie Awards, which honor Off and Off-Off Broadway productions.

Arturo Luís SoriaSoria will be recognized for his performance in Ni Mi Madre, which he performed at the downtown theatre company Rattlestick Playwrights Theater.

Soria stars in his solo show about the stormy relationship between a Brazilian woman and her queer son. Steeped in the tradition of Umbanda ritual, and featuring the music of Gloria Estefan, Cher and Maria BethâniaNi Mi Madre examines themes of family, citizenship and identity as a queer Latino.

The play, which began as an improvisational one act, was developed into a full-length presentation through the partnership of Rattlestick Directing Fellow Danilo Gambini.

Presented by the American Theatre Wing, the Obies will be handed out Monday evening in a ceremony at Manhattan’s Terminal 5 venue. Sustained and Lifetime Achievement winners will accept their awards during the ceremony, while remarks of all other winners will premiere on the American Theatre Wing’s YouTube channel.

“For this OBIES, the judges reviewed over 400 productions over the last three seasons including digital and audio works made during the pandemic,” said Heather Hitchens, President & CEO, in a statement. “We look forward to finally gathering in person to celebrate the artistic excellence and resilience of the amazing artists and theatre companies that make up the Off- and Off-Off- Broadway community.­­”

Guillermo del Toro Granted Technical Achievement Award at London Critics’ Circle Film Awards

Guillermo del Toro is the critics’ choice across the pond…

The 43rd annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards winners have been revealed, with the 58-year-old Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker picking up an award.

Guillermo del Toro, Pinocchio,del Toro took home the Technical Achievement Award for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” for the Netflix film’s animation. The awards was was collected by Gregory Mann, who voiced Pinocchio.

The awards are given by the 200-member film section of the Critics’ Circle, the U.K.’s longest-standing critics’ organization. The May Fair Hotel was the main sponsor of the event for the 13th year running.

Paulina Gaitán Starring in Comedy Series “Put@s Redes Sociales” for Prime Video

The 30-year-old Mexican actress is starring in the comedy series Put@s Redes Sociales, from Eugenio Derbez and Ben Odell.

Jorge Ulloa directs the series, which explores human relationships in the era of likes.

Put@s Redes Sociales tells the story of Amanda (Gaitán), a decadent YouTuber of children’s content who has just turned 30, which makes her “over the hill” on the internet. She’s willing to do anything to stay relevant on social networks, from filtering her own nude photo to risking her life (or, at least pretending to). She does all this to dethrone the number-one influencer of the moment: Vicky Moo (Guaita), who also happens to be her younger sister.

The cast also includes Hernán Mendoza, Jesús Zavala, Melissa Hallivis, Beng Zeng Wong, Hugo Catalán, Nataly Valencia, Bárbara Torres, Paola Fernández, and Jorge Enrique Abello.

“With this series, we confirm our commitment to new, successful creators in the digital world, like Jorge Ulloa from Enchufe TV—who is endorsed by the experienced executive producer Eugenio Derbez—joining forces in a comedy about our tragic addiction to likes,” said Alonso Aguilar Castillo, head of Original content for Mexico at Prime Video. “In Put@s Redes Sociales, our audience will discover an insolent provocation between two generations who, not understanding each other, prefer to laugh at each other.”

The series is an Amazon Studios and 3pas Studios production, made by Visceral.

It was shot in Mexico City in Fall 2022 and will be released in 2023, with Derbez, Odell, and Javier Williams executive producing, from a script by Jorge Ulloa, Valencia, Cynthia Fernández Trejo, and Juan Diego Aguilar. Pablo Calasso serves as co-producer.

Shakira Partnering with Bizarrap for “BZRP Music Session #53”

The 45-year-old Colombian singer and songwriter is teaming up with Bizarrap for one of the Argentine producer’s hit-producing Music Sessions.

Initially, the new single had been teased with release date of Wednesday, January 11 and a one liner: “a wolf like me doesn’t have time for men like you.”

Subsequently, they announced the collab, simply writing, “Tomorrow, BZRP Music Session #53.”

It’s the first time the pair has teamed up for a track. Shakira joins a number of artists — including Nicky Jam, Residente and Paulo Londra — who’ve jumped on one of Bizarrap’s zealously streamed music sessions.

His session with Spanish act Quevedo scored both their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. Currently, it has more than 400 million views on YouTube.

This new song will follow Shakira’s Ozuna-assisted “Monotonía,” which peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’Hot Latin Songs chart dated November 5. It currently sits at No. 1 on the Latin Airplay chart, where it’s ruled for four weeks.

Recently, Shakira shared a heartfelt message of hope to start off the new year. “Even if our wounds are still open in this new year, time has a surgeon’s hands. Even if someone’s betrayed us, we must continue to trust others,” wrote the Colombian singer. “When faced with contempt, continue to know your worth. Because there are more good people than indecent ones. More people with empathy than indifference.”

She continued: “The ones who leave are fewer than the many who stay by our side. Our tears are not in vain, they water the soil our future will spring from and make us more human, so that even while suffering heartache we can continue to love.”

The message came after a difficult year due to her separation from Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué, the father of her children. The singer has spoken openly about the breakup since it was confirmed in June, and has posted material — including releasing the heartbreak song “Monotonía” — alluding to her pain.

Bad Bunny’s “Callaíta” Becomes His Latest Billion Views Club Entry on YouTube

The 28-year-old Puerto Rican superstar’s music video for “Callaíta,” his collaboration with Tainy, has surpassed the billion-view list on YouTube.

Bad BunnyThe song was released on May 31, 2019, three years prior to the release of Bad Bunny’s history-making album Un Verano Sin Ti.

With its serene intro and seagull squawking from afar, the banger encapsulates the essence of the record’s eternal summer energy — it is the outro track of Benito’s latest groundbreaking LP, after all.

The visual already feels like a classic, with Bad Bunny rocking his famous buzzed triangular hairstyle from the late ‘10s. The video follows a woman who loves taking shots at the bar, but she’s low-key otherwise. Then, a group of beach- and partygoers hit the shores where there’s a merry-go-round spinning on the sand, and Benito gets his chance with the quiet gal.

A few weeks apart from Un Verano Sin Ti dropping, “Callaíta” reached one billion streams on Spotify this year.

“Seeing that ‘Callaita’ became what it became is insane. It’s humbling that people still connect with the song after so many years,” Tainy recently told Billboard Español of the song reaching the milestone on Spotify. “You get a sense of those classic songs that you grew up listening to and still hear today, and can’t comprehend how they still connect with people after so many years. I’m happy that we were able to create a song that has stood the test of time.”

The producer continued: “We always had dreams about things we wanted to do, but they had a limit. Because we didn’t think it was possible for people like me — where I come from, who I am, our position in the world — and to see that I’ve been able to exceed that by a billion from what I initially thought could be possible, it just makes you feel like this is all blessings. [I’m] just here to have a responsibility of inspiring more people that could do twice as much as what [I’ve] done. That’s the most special part for me.”

In all, Bad Bunny has a total of nine titles in the coveted Billion Views Club on YouTube.

Carolina Gaitán & Her “Encanto” Cast Mates Rank No. 1 on YouTube’s Top 10 Songs of the Year List

YouTube has revealed its top 10 songs of the year, with the 38-year-old Colombian actress and singer’s single with her Encanto cast mates, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” topping the list.

The 27-year-old Cuban American actress/singer’s “Surface Pressure,” which she performed as her character (Luisa Madrigal) in the animated film, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 on the charts in the UK.

It was a big year for Latin music on YouTube, as both Bad Bunny and Karol G had two songs each on YouTube’s top 10 list.

The 28-year-old Puerto Rican superstar’s “Tití Me Preguntó” came in at No. 4 while his Chencho Corleone collaboration “Me Porto Bonito” was No. 6.

The 31-year-old Colombian singer’s Becky G duet “Mamiii” came in at No. 7 while her sultry “Provenza” hit No. 9.

The songs that appear on the annual YouTube include streams from the official music video, lyric videos and user-generated content that uses the full official song, and cover the period from January 1, 2022 to November 15, 2022. Its lists are restricted to two songs for each artist or album.

YouTube’s rankings don’t end there. The streaming giant also shares its lists for top trending videos, top shorts, top creators, breakout creators, ads, and more.

The Nintendo Direct YouTube channel has unveiled the second trailer for Illumination’s Super Mario Bros Movie, starring the 26-year-old Argentine American actress as Princess Peach.

Anya Taylor-JoyIn the new trailer, Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) enters a cheering arena where he faces off with Donkey Kong (voiced by Seth Rogen). Mario jumps and the big ape catches the little guy in mid air before whacking him repeatedly.

Meanwhile, Koopa has Luigi in his grip.

“One problem, there’s a human who has a mustache just like you,” says the ogre voiced by Jack Black.

Anya Taylor-Joy, Princess Peach, Super Mario Bros MovieWe also see Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach for the first time.

Robert Trujillo & His Metallica Mates’ Helping Hands Concert to Air on Paramount+

The 58-year-old half-Mexican American musician and his fellow Metallica band mates’ Helping Hands benefit concert will air on Paramount+, Pluto TV and MTV’s YouTube channel.

The sold out December 16 show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles will be hosted by late night’s Jimmy Kimmel and feature an opening set from Greta Van Fleet.

The event will kick off at 8:30 p.m. ET and stream live on Paramount+, with simulcasts on Pluto and YouTube.

It will also feature an auction that kicks off on December 5 to benefit the foundation, with 100% of the ticket and auction proceeds earmarked for those in need via a number of national and local charities.

Among the organizations that All Within My Hands has partnered with over the years are: the American Association of Community Colleges, Feeding America, Direct Relief and World Central Kitchen.

This year alone the foundation has handed out $100,000 to Direct Relief and World Central Kitchen to help those hit hardest by Hurricanes Ian and Fiona in Florida and Puerto Rico in October, as well as $20,000 to the Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh in August and $100,000 to World Central Kitchen’s efforts to feed Ukrainian refugees fleeing Russia’s unprovoked war on their country.

Steve Treviño Signs with Creative Artists Agency (CAA)

The 44-year-old Mexican American rising stand-up comedian, writer and producer has signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) for representation.

Steve TreviñoDubbed “America’s Favorite Husband” for his relatable style, Treviño’s videos have been viewed more than 223 million times. He has sold out shows coast-to-coast, has amassed more than two million social media followers, and has headlined specials for Amazon, Netflix and Showtime, among others.

Treviño’s specials include Grandpa Joe’s Son, his first for Showtime, which was ranked among the Nielsen Top 20.  He also funded, produced, and shot his 2014 Netflix hit Relatable. To promote the special, he uploaded a clip titled “When Your Wife Comes Home From Shopping,” which generated 56 million views on Facebook.

He also expanded his social media presence through fans imitating bits of his comedy specials on TikTok.  In less than two years, the grassroots effort helped him build a worldwide fan base on the platform, garnering 4.8 million likes and more than 50 million views.

In 2020, he and his wife, Renae, unveiled a weekly podcast entitled Steve Treviño and Captain Evil that has earned more than 1.5 million views/streams and is now in its third season.

He also filmed his fourth self-produced comedy special, My Life In Quarantine, which was picked up by Amazon Prime.

His self-produced fifth special filmed in Waco, Texas, entitled I Speak Wife, independently released on October 21 for free, exclusively to his global audience on YouTube.

Treviño regularly raises money for Helicopters for Heroes, an organization benefiting veterans, for whom he has helped raise over $1.5 million in the past two years.

Netflix Orders Reggaeton-Themed Comedy Series “Neon,” Starring Tyler Dean Flores

Netflix has given a series order to Neon, a comedy series starring the Puerto Rican actor.

Flores, Emma FerreiraJordan Mendoza and Courtney Taylor star in the series, which hails from creator Shea Serrano with Max Searle set as showrunner.

Serrano, the author of The Rap Year Book, is behind Amazon Freevee series Primo with Mike Schur and Searle is co-showrunner of the second season of Chad and co-exec producer of Dave.

The eight-part series focuses on three friends who move from a small town in Florida to Miami with the hopes of making it big in the world of reggaeton. The show chronicles not only their larger than life dreams but the harsh comic realities of attempting to make it in the music industry.

Flores (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) plays Santi, a budding reggaeton artist who, with the help of his friends, Ness, played by (Ferreira) and Felix, (Mendoza) and A&R rep, Mia (Taylor) hopes to become the biggest reggaeton star in the world. Or at least make rent.

The series is executive produced by Serrano and Searle. It comes from Scooter Braun’s SB Projects with Braun executive-producing alongside Scott Manson and James Shin. Kyle Vinuya is co-executive producer. Mendoza also serves as consulting producer.

Flores’ previous credits include The Dark Knight Rises, When They See Us and Chicago Fire.
