Danny Ocean Earns First-Ever No. 1s on Billboard Charts with “Amor”

It’s a special, long-awaited first for Danny Ocean. 

The 32-year-old Venezuelan singer, songwriter and record producer, whose real name is Daniel Alejandro Morales Reyes, has earned his first No. 1 on a Billboard chart with “Amor.”

“What makes me happiest, beyond my name being there, is that a Venezuelan is at No. 1,” Ocean tells Billboard. “This is a project that has always honored love.”

“Amor” takes the crown with 8.7 million audience impressions, up 54%, on U.S. reporting radio stations during the May 31-June 6 tracking week, according to Luminate.

Thanks to the 54% percentage surge on airplay, “Amor” wins the Greatest Gainer honor, awarded weekly to the song with the largest gain in impressions among the chart’s 50 titles. Among the song’s biggest supporters, New York’s WXNY leads the way in the latest tracking week, Puerto Rico’s WKAQ comes second, while Los Angeles’ KXOL rounds out the top three.

Thus, it takes second-fastest rise to the summit among the ranking’s 21 rulers in 2024, after Xavi’s “La Diabla” which reached the penthouse in its third week (chart dated February 10).

Only one song achieved the feat faster: Shakira and Cardi B’s “Puntería” debuted atop the list dated April 6. Here’s the recap of those songs that needed the least weeks to land at No. 1 on Latin Airplay in 2024:

As “Amor” hits No. 1 on Latin Airplay, it pushes Alejandro Fernández and Alfredo Olivas’Cobijas Ajenas” from the lead, with a 33% drop in impressions, to 5.9 million.

Fonsi Earns Seventh No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Despacito”

The 38-year-old Puerto Rican singer-songwriter’s latest single “Despacito,” featuring Daddy Yankee, rises 2-1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart dated March 11.

The seventh career chart-topper for both Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.

The ascent marks Fonsi’s first Latin Airplay No. 1 since 2009, when “Aqui Estoy Yo” topped the chart. Daddy Yankee most recently crowned the list in 2016 when “Vaiven” spent a week at the top (January 23).

The song’s rise to the summit is due to a 13 percent increase at the format, to 18.2 million audience impressions in the week ending February 26, according to Nielsen Music. Both act’s hometown station WKAQ, San Juan, Puerto Rico (a Univision Radio station), was a top contributor with 77 weekly spins of the song.

Univision Communications, Inc.’s vice president, managing director of radio strategy Ismar Santa Cruz tells Billboard, “Luis Fonsi took a heritage sound that he has been known for and successfully adapted it to the sounds that are impacting the market and our audience today.” Adding, “the inclusion of Daddy Yankee as a featured artist added an additional rhythmic element by a core star artist that complemented the track very well.”

Fonsi, who has dotted the chart with 30 songs since debuting in 1998, has traditionally been known known for his ballads. “Despacito” is his first foray into a more rhythmic, reggaeton sound aided by a pioneer in reggaeton’s shift into the mainstream, Daddy Yankee (the record holder for most chart hits on Billboard’s Latin Rhythm Songs chart, with 59).

Univision’s WXNY, New York also championed the track with 45 plays (and 1.2 million audience impressions). Of its nationwide draw, Santa Cruz comments “Univision listeners are really relating to the rhythm and lyrics— and we’re seeing that in various formats across multiple top markets including Puerto Rico, Miami, Houston, Chicago and Los Angeles, among others.”

Santa Cruz sums up the tracks appeal, “all in all, the track really hits on all levels, and we see it resonating to that degree with our audiences.”

Elsewhere, “Despacito” concurrently spends a fourth straight week at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart thanks to increased digital sales and steady streams, in addition to the on-air rise.

For a third consecutive week it is the most streamed Spanish-language song in the U.S., supporting its stay atop Hot Latin Songs (despite a 3 percent dip to 7.6 million plays in the week ending Feb. 23). YouTube accounts for nearly half of the streams (49 percent), where the music video for the track has collected over 369 million global views since its January 12 release. Digital sales also aid the ranking, hiking 11 percent, to 9,000 downloads sold.

Don Omar’s “Yo Te Quiero Pa’Mi” Reaches No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

Don Omar is back at the top of the charts…

The 38-year-old Puerto Rican reggaeton superstar has earned his eighth No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart (dated December 24) as “Yo Te Quiero Pa’Mi,” with Zion & Lennox, bounds 11-1 in its fourth charting frame – his quickest chart-topping rise yet.

The single concurrently flies 7-1 on the Latin Rhythm Airplay chart, where it becomes Don Omar’s 12th leader.

A 40 percent increase in audience, to 13.6 million impressions in the week ending December 11, causes the No. 1 climbs.

New York’s WSKQ leads in audience impressions contributing towards its rank, with 3.8 million coming from the major-market station. Two San Juan, Puerto Rico stations (WODA and WKAQ) also provide significant points, with over 1 million weekly audience impressions, each.

The newly recorded single appears on Omar’s recent 10th anniversary re-release of his King of Kings album — his most successful album to date. In 2006, the original set spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart and has sold 556,000 copies, according to Nielsen Music.

King of Kings spurred Omar’s first No. 1 hit on Latin Airplay, when “Angelito” reached the top on the July 22, 2006 chart. The set’s “Salio El Sol” also became a top 20 hit that year.

Martin’s “Disparo Al Corazon” Makes Impressive Debut on Billboard’s Latin Charts

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican singer has landed his way onto Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart with “Disparo Al Corazon,” the second single from his upcoming tenth studio album A Quien Quiera Escuchar.

Martin’s ballad enters the chart at No. 35, aided by 3.2 million audience impressions gained during its first week at radio, according to Nielsen Music (week ending Jan. 18).

WKAQ, San Juan, in the singer’s native Puerto Rico, championed the song with 58 spins during the tracking week.

Entering at No. 19 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart, Martin extends his lead for most top 20s on the chart to 40 (followed by Enrique Iglesias with 36).

It’s the 42nd hit to earn its notch on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart for Martin, and follows the set’s lead single, “Adios,” which dips 38-37 in its 17th week. Furthermore, “Disparo Al Corazon” opens at No. 7 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Digital Songs chart (1,000 downloads), trailing “Adios” at No. 4 (2,000).

The entrance marks the first ballad on the chart for Martin since 2013 when he joined former Menudo bandmate and longtime collaborator Draco Rosa as a featured act on “Mas y Mas.” The single, from Rosa’s Vida set, reached No. 27 on Hot Latin Songs.

“Disparo” was produced by Julio Reyes (Jennifer Lopez, Alejandro Sanz) and written by Martin along with Pedro Capo and Yoel Henriquez.

A video clip for the song is expected to premiere in the following weeks.
