Zoe Saldana to Star in Fact-Based Thriller “Sabaya”

Zoe Saldana is ready to thrill…

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American actress will star in Sabaya, a fact-based thriller that Reed Morano will direct based on a William Monahan script about the unlikely circumstances that made possible a 2015 U.S. Special Forces raid that killed a top ISIS leader and started the downfall of the radical Islamic State.

Saldana will play a female CIAofficer who befriended a recently escaped ISIS sex slave, or “sabaya.” The 15-year-old Yazidi girl can neither read nor write, but as she works with the teen to piece together her harrowing odyssey out of Syria, the CIA officer finds that the abused girl has pinpointed the nerve center of the Caliphate. The subsequent dramatic raid on the site of the young woman’s captivity results in the capture of intelligence that would spell the end of the Islamic State.

The story comes from Spycraft Entertainment, a production company headed by Grant Verstandig and former CIA officers John Sipherand Jerry O’Shea, who work with retired members of the intelligence community to create and develop content based on their true stories.

“It is an honor to be a part of the telling of this story,” said Saldana. “This young woman’s journey is one for the books, and I am beyond grateful we will get to immortalize it on the silver screen.”

Morano has called Sabaya “a larger than life epic but it’s also an intimate, raw portrait of a young girl’s determination and the bond that forms between these two women. I’ve not seen such a mind-blowing adventure that is simultaneously so emotionally transcendent, from these perspectives before. I’m thrilled to be telling this powerful story with the incredible Bill and Zoe.”

Monahan called Sabaya “the best material for an emotionally powerful theatrical war film that I have seen in ages and I don’t say that lightly. It’s a story of doing the right thing against desperate odds, and if you think about it, no film that’s any good is about anything else whatsoever. Sabaya is what the big screen is for, and this dream team we’ve got is all out for [it].”

Saldana’s previous credits include the Guardians of the Galaxy/ the Avengers franchise films, the Avatar franchise, and the Star Trek franchise films.

Isaac to Star Opposite Garrett Hedlund in “Mojave”

Oscar Isaac will have a country strong co-star for his next film…

The 33-year-old Guatemalan and Cuban American actor, who has been earning rave reviews for his starring role in Inside Llewyn Davis, will star opposite Garrett Hedlund in the thriller Mojave.

The William Monahan-directed film, from the filmmaker’s original script, centers on a near-suicidal artist (portrayed by Hedlund, who starred in Country Strong) who escapes into the desert to take an existential crisis head-on, only to encounter a doppelganger-like antagonist in the form of a brilliant, homicidal drifter (Isaac).

Filming on Mojave is expected to start in the next few months.

Directed by William Monahan, who won an Oscar for penning the Martin Scorsese crime drama The Departed, the film repotedly centers on a desert escape by a criminal.

Monahan wrote the script, whose plot details are being kept under wraps.

Isaac, recently seen in Joel and Ethan Coen’s Inside Llewyn Davis, caught Hollywood’s attention in this summer’s blockbuster The Bourne Legacy. He’s also stared in Drive and Sucker Punch.

Producers are eyeing an early 2013 start for Mojave.

Rodriguez to Make a “Sin City” Sequel

Robert Rodriguez is heading back to Sin City

The 43-year-old Mexican-American filmmaker and Frank Miller have announced plans to film a sequel to their 2005 cult classic Sin City, a film that explores the dark and miserable town, Basin City, and tells the story of three different people, all caught up in violent corruption.

Entitled Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, the upcoming film was developed by Miller from his graphic novel of the same name, and scripted by Miller and William Monahan. The film will be distributed once again by Dimension Films.

“Audiences have been clamoring for Sin City 2 with Robert and Frank for a long time and trust me, it will be worth the wait,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company. “This will be my 11th collaboration with Robert in 16 years and he’s become a great friend. I look forward to continuing our long lasting relationship and partnering on more projects in the future.”

Production is slated to begin this summer at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas with casting starting next week. According to the official release, much of the film’s original cast is expected to return— though the release didn’t specify if the characters who died in the first film would be popping up again.
