Shakira to Receive Video Vanguard Award at This Year’s MTV Video Music Awards

Shakira is being celebrated for leading the way…

The 46-year-old Colombian superstar singer-songwriter will receive the Video Vanguard Award at MTV‘s 2023 Video Music Awards on September 12, becoming the first South American artist to earn the award.

Shakira will accept the award and perform at the ceremony for the first time since 2006.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer is a four-time VMA winner and 30-time nominee.

She won her first VMA — the award for International Viewer’s Choice — Latin America (North) — in 2000 for “Ojos Así.” She snagged the same award in 2002 for “Whenever, Wherever/Suerte” and also scooped up the trophy for Best Choreography in a Video for 2006’s “Hips Don’t Lie” as well as Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration for 2007’s “Beautiful Liar” with Beyoncé.

Shakira has also earned three Grammys and 12 Latin Grammys in her career.

The Video Vanguard Award, named after Michael Jackson, went to Nicki Minaj last year. Previous winners include Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Kanye West, David Bowie, Madonna and Rihanna. The Beatles and A Hard Day’s Night director Richard Lester won the award at the first VMAs in 1984.

Shakira is nominated for four VMAs this year: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Latin for “TQG” with Karol G, and Best Latin for “Acróstico.”

Earlier this year, her hit collaboration with Bizarrap, “Music Sessions Vol. 53,” set a number of streaming records on Spotify and YouTube.

Shakira first performed at the VMAs in 2002 with her rendition of “Objection (Tango),” and was the first artist to perform a song entirely in Spanish at the ceremony alongside Alejandro Sanz when they sang “La Tortura” in 2005.

Taylor Swift leads this year’s VMA nominations with eight, while SZA comes in second with six nominations. Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, Olivia Rodrigo and Kim Petras each have five nominations, and Blackpink and Diddy tie Shakira’s four. Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin, and Stray Kids are confirmed to perform at the ceremony, with MTV announcing more performers soon.

Bizarrap Earns First No. 1 on Billboard Hot Latin Songs Chart with Shakira-Collab “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”

Bizarrap has earned his first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart…

The 24-year-old Argentine DJ and record producer captures his first chart-topper for “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” his smash collaboration with Shakira.

The new track rallies up the January 28-dated chart with a 16-1 jump following its first full-week of tracking.

With the No. 1 song, Shakira ties with Bad Bunny for the fourth-most No. 1s overall, both with 12.

The song was released on January 11 at 7 p.m. ET through Dale Play/Sony Music Latin and debuted at No. 16 (chart dated January 21) with less than two days of activity.

Hot Latin Songs ranks the most popular Latin songs in the U.S. based on a blend of airplay, digital sales, and streaming data.

Starting with radio airplay, “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” generated 7.42 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending in January 19, according to Luminate. The sum allows for a No. 5 debut on the all-genre Latin Airplay chart.

It’s the second top 10 for Bizarrap after his four-week command with “Music Sessions, Vol. 52,” with Quevedo (November 2022). Shakira, meanwhile, collects her 36th top 10.

On the streaming front, “Music Sessions, Vol. 53” logged 20.2 million official U.S. streams, up 315%, in the same tracking period. The count yields a No. 3 start on the overall Streaming Song ranking and a 17-1 jump on Latin Streaming Songs.

Sales also assist the collaboration’s No. 1 ascent on Hot Latin Songs. With 9,000 downloads sold, “Vol. 53” surges 23-3 on the Digital Songs Sales ranking and holds at No. 1 for a second week on Latin Digital Song Sales.

It’s the largest sales week among Hot Latin Songs hits since Shakira’s own “Suerte (Whenever, Wherever)” sold 15,000 on the Feb. 15, 2020-dated chart, following her performance of the track during the halftime show that year (Feb. 2).

Back on the multimetric tally, “Vol. 53” easily sends Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera’s “Bebe Dame” to No. 2 after its one week in charge.

Notably, “Vol. 53” allows for another woman in a lead or co-lead role to rule Hot Latin Songs for the first time since Karol G’s “Provenza” in May 2022. Further, the tally’s No. 1 slot was monopolized by three Bad Bunny’s songs for 35 weeks, as “Moscow Mule,” “Me Porto Bonito,” with Chencho Corleone, and “Titi Me Preguntó” dominated the May 21, 2022 – January 14, 2023-dated rankings, until Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera’s “Bebe Dame” landed at the summit the week prior.

Elsewhere on the charts, “Vol. 53” makes a No. 9 debut on the overall Billboard Hot 100 chart. It’s the highest start for both acts, and Shakira’s highest ranking since “Beautiful Liar,” with Beyoncé, peaked at No. 3 in 2007. “Vol. 53” also bows at No. 2 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts.

Jennifer Lopez & Shakira’s Super Bowl-Performed Songs See Huge Sales Gains

Jennifer Lopezand Shakiraare reaping the rewards of a job well done…

The 50-year-old Puerto Rican multi-hyphenate and the 43-year-old Colombian superstar’s high-energy team-up for the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show on Sunday, February 2 resulted in immediate sales gains for both.

According to initial reports to Nielsen Music, the collection of songs performed during the halftime show (which aired live on Fox TVin the U.S.) garnered a 1,013% sales increase in the U.S. on the day of the big game. In total, the tunes sold 16,000 digital downloads on Sunday, up from a little more than 1,000 sold on Saturday, February 1.

The biggest selling song among those performed was Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever,” which sold nearly 4,000 on February 2, snaring a 1,194% increase compared to the negligible figure it posted the day before. The second-largest selling halftime tune was another Shakira track, “Hips Don’t Lie,” moving 2,000 downloads (up 1,126% from a negligible sum the day before).

The halftime show was led by a multi-song medley from Shakira, with special guest Bad Bunny, which then transitioned to a medley by Lopez, with an appearance by J Balvin. After Lopez’s set, she was joined by Shakira to close the show with a two-song medley of Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud” (plus a snippet of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.”) and Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa).”

News on streaming gains gleaned from the halftime show are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Jennifer Lopez & Shakira Rock the Super Bowl with Their Epic & Latin Proud Halftime Show

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira are celebrating an epic night at Hard Rock Stadiumin Miami.

The 50-year-old Puerto Rican superstar and the 43-year-old Colombian superstar teamed up for an electrifying Super Bowl halftime show.

J.Loand Shakimade history at Super Bowl LIVon Sunday as the first two Latina women to co-headline the coveted halftime show gig, and they each brought their unique styles to a worldwide audience, performing a combined 20 songs in 14 minutes. (Gloria Estefanwas part of the 1992 and 1999 halftime shows, and sent her support for Lopez and Shakira, both of whom she has written songs for.)

Shakira kicked things off with her hit “She Wolf,” then seamlessly transitioned into her track “Empire,” where she showcased her ability to shred on the guitar.

After a brief dance interlude, Shakira — who rocked a sparkly red two-piece — broke into “Whenever, Wherever” and a cover of Cardi B’s “I Like It,” with an assist from Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton singer Bad Bunny, who appears on the original singer.

Shaki, who celebrated her 43rd birthday on Super Bowl Sunday, then showed off her dancing skills once again before singing “Hips Don’t Lie,” during which she crowd-surfed atop a group of enthusiastic fans.

Then, Lopez took over the program, taking the stage atop a skyscraper-like pole for a high-energy performance of “Jenny from the Block” and “Ain’t It Funny,” and then transitioned into “Get Right.”

After shedding her studded black leather bodysuit for a sparkly silver one, Lopez showed off her Hustlersmoves own on a stripper pole, while singing “Waiting for Tonight.”

J.Lo was then joined by J. Balvin, who assisted her on “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.”

Lopez continued to flaunt her moves to “Mi Gente” before moving on to a high-octane version of “On the Floor.”

The performance then transformed into a family affair as Lopez brought out her 11-year-old daughter Emme, who hit the stage singing a slowed-down rendition of “Let’s Get Loud” — with Shakira on drums — before her mom came back out wearing a large jacket made of feathers that featured the American flag on one side and the Puerto Rican flag on the other. It was a show of support to the territory, which has been affected by natural disasters in recent years, including Hurricane Maria and a recent damaging earthquake.

Emme briefly sang Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” while the set design featured glowing cages housing child performers, a marked gesture of solidarity toward the Latin community and those impacted by anti-immigration policies.

Then Shakira joined Lopez to sing “Let’s Get Loud” together.

The duo then moved on to Shakira’s hit “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” before switching back to “Let’s Get Loud,” at which point they closed out their set with impressive synchronized shimmiesas fireworks went off behind them, before wrapping their historic performance with a hug.

Gloria Estefan Nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame

Gloria Estefan has the write stuff of legends…

The 62-year-old Cuban singer/songwriter and former Miami Sound Machine member has been nominated for the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Estefan, a three-time Grammy winner and three-time Latin Grammy, has penned numerousinternational chart-topping hits in English and Spanish, including “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “1-2-3,” “Don’t Wanna Lose You,” “Here We Are,” “Coming Out of the Dark,” “Con Los Años Que Me Quedan,” “Mi Tierra” and “No Me Dejes de Querer.”

Additionally, Estefan has penned songs for other artists, including “Let’s Get Loud,” performed by Jennifer Lopez, and “Whenever Wherever,” performed by Shakira. Additionally, she co-wrote “Reach,” one of two official songs of the 1996 Atlanta Games, with Diane Warren.

In all, 24 acts are in contention for the 2020 class. In addition to Estefan, performing nominees include Patti Smith, Journey, Vince Gill, the Isley Brothers, former Eurythmicsmembers Annie Lennoxand Dave Stewart, Mike Love, Bread’s David Gates and Steve Miller, The Neptunes, the creative, innovative production-songwriting duo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, rap icons Outkast and rock pioneers R.E.M.Mariah Carey, who co-wrote 17 of her 18 No. 1 hits and earned her first Songwriters Hall nomination last year, is up for the prize again.

The Songwriters Hall gave The Associated Press the list of nominees Tuesday (Nov. 5), a day ahead of its official announcement.

Non-performing solo nominees are William “Mickey” Stevenson, Rick Nowels, Sonny Curtis, Jerry Fuller, Tony Macaulay, Bob McDill and Roger Nichols. Non-performing songwriting duos nominated include the late Tommy Boyceand Bobby Hart,Lynn Ahrensand Stephen Flaherty, L. Russell Brownand the late Irwin Levine, and Kye Flemingand Dennis Morgan.

Songwriters are eligible for induction after writing hit songs for at least 20 years. Six songwriters, or songwriting groups, will be officially inducted at the Hall’s 51st annual Induction & Awards Gala in New York on June 11, 2020. Eligible members can vote for three non-performing songwriters and three performing songwriters until December 16.

Shakira to Appear on Apple Music’s “Carpool Karaoke: The Series”

Shakira is hitting the carpool lane in Spain…

The 40-year-old Colombian superstar serves as Trevor Noah’s tour guide in her adopted hometown of Barcelona in a new episode of Apple Music‘s Carpool Karaoke: The Series premiering Tuesday (September 12).

Remarking on Barcelona’s beauty, Noah sports a red and yellow scarf, boasting the colors of the Catalan flag.

The car cruises to Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia cathedral, the city’s biggest tourist attraction, where Shakira immediately causes selfie madness, while Noah makes jokes about the fact that no one seems to recognize him in the least.

A teaser for the episode promises a joyful, and well-timed, homage to Barcelona and its street life.

The episode airs almost a month after the August 17 terrorist attack in the city center that killed 14 people.

Estefan Nominated for 2017 Songwriters Hall of Fame

Gloria Estefan has the write stuff…

The 59-year-old Cuban singer and former Miami Sound Machine vocalist has been nominated for the 2017 Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Songwriters Hall announced the list of nominees Thursday, a day ahead of its official announcement. Other nominees that could be inducted next year are Jay Z, George Michael, Madonna, Bryan Adams, Vince Gill, Babyface, Max Martin, Kool & the Gang and more.

Estefan, a seven-time Grammy winner, found breakthrough success with her group’s 1985 single “Conga,” which made her a worldwide name.

She’s written several of the Spanish and English songs she’s performed, including “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” “Anything for You,” “1-2-3” and “Oye Mi Canto.”

Estefan has also written/co-written hits for other artists, including Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever,” Jennifer Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud” and Jon Secada’s “Angel.”

Eligible members can vote for three non-performing songwriters and two performing songwriters until December 16. Five songwriters, or songwriting groups, will be officially inducted at a gala in New York on June 15, 2017.

Other performing nominees include Cat Stevens, Sly Stone, Chicago, Jeff Lynne and David Gates.

Non-performing nominees are Kenny Nolan, Randy Goodrum, Tony Macaulay, William “Mickey” Stevenson, Allee Willis, Maury Yeston, Paul Overstreet and the songwriting duos Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, and Steve Barri and the late P.F. Sloan, who died last year.

Songwriters are eligible for induction after writing hit songs for at least 20 years.

Shakira Among Finalists for This Year’s Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame

Shakira is known for her stellar songwriting… And, it could soon land her in the annals of history.

The 39-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter appears on the list of nominees in the performers (singer/songwriters) category to the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame 2016.

Shakira, who penned several of her hit singles, including “Inevitable,” “She Wolf,” and “Whenever, Wherever,” joins a list that includes fellow performers Juanes, Marco Antonio Solis and Draco Rosa.

Shakira won the Latin Grammy for Song of the Year in 2006 for her massive international hit “La Tortura.”

Non-performer (composers) finalists include Kike Santander, Carlos Lara, Chico Navarro and Alejandro Jean.

The final list of artists and composers chosen to be inducted into the LSHOF will be announced at the 2016 Latin Billboard Music Conference taking place in April.

The selected six winners will then be inducted into the esteemed hall during the fourth annual La Musa Awards at the Filmore Miami Beach Jackie Gleason Theater on October 13.

Estefan Nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame

Gloria Estefan’s name may soon appear in the annals of history…

The 57-year-old Cuban singer has been nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Estefan, one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time, has penned several of her own memorable songs in English and Spanish, including “Anything for You,” “Coming Out of the Dark,” “Rhythm is Gonna Get You” and “No Llores.”

But the former lead singer of Miami Sound Machine has also written or co-written massive hit tracks recorded by other artists, including Shakira’s English-language crossover hit “Whenever, Wherever” and Jennifer Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud.”

Other 2015 nominees include Tom Petty, Vince Gill, Cyndi Lauper, Elvis Costello, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Cat Stevens, Toby Keith, Steve Miller, Steve Winwood, Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson of Heart, and Harry Wayne “K.C.” Casey of KC & the Sunshine Band.

The selected songwriters will be inducted next June at a New York gala.

Estefan to be Inducted into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame

Gloria Estefan’s name is being added to the annals of Latin music history…

The 56-year-old Cuban singer-songwriter and seven-time Grammy Award winner has been named as a Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee.

Estefan, one of the top 100 best selling music artists with an estimated 100 million records sold worldwide, rose to acclaim as the lead singer of the Miami Sound Machine.

But the “Conga” singer, the female artist with most No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, earned critical acclaim for penning some of her biggest solo hits in English and Spanish, including “Cuts Both Ways,” “Always Tomorrow,” “Coming Out of the Dark,” “No Llores” and “Oye Mi Canto (Hear My Voice).”

Estefan also co-wrote Shakira’s hit single “Whenever, Wherever” with the Colombian superstar and Tim Mitchell and co-wrote Jennifer Lopez’s signature song “Let’s Get Loud.”

In addition to Estefan, Ricardo Arjona, Juan Luis Guerra, Panamanian composer Omar Alfanno, Spanish pop songwriter Rafael Pérez Botija and Mexican singer/songwriter Lolita de la Colina will also be honored at this year’s induction ceremony — known as La Musa Awards — taking place on October 18 at Miami Beach’s Ritz Carlton hotel.

The Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame debuted in 2013 with a black tie gala honoring well-known Latin music figures including Jose Feliciano, Julio Iglesias and composer Armando Manzanero.

Founded by songwriters and producers Desmond Child and Rudy Perez, the goal of the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame is to “honor the world’s greatest Latin songwriters and their music in every genre.”
