Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Birdman” Earns Five Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards Nominations

The 51-year-old Mexican filmmaker’s Birdman has earned five nominations from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle, including Best Film, to lead this year’s field of nominees.

Gonzalez Inarritu, who has already earned critical acclaim and awards recognition across the globe for his dark comedy, picked up two individual mentions.

In the Best Director category, he’ll face off against Boyhood’s Richard Linklater‘s Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel’s Wes Anderson.

Gonzalez Inarritu, Linklater and Anderson will also compete in the best screenplay category.

Winners of the Vancouver Film Critics Circle awards will be announced in the Canadian city on Monday, January 5.

The 33-year-old Guatemalan and Cuban American actor has followed up his Toronto Film Critics Association win for Best Actor with a trophy from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle.

Isaac’s critically acclaimed performance in Joel and Ethan Coen’s Inside Llewyn Davis earned the Best Actor award during 14th edition of the Canadian fest on Tuesday night.

But Isaac wasn’t the night’s only Latino award winner…

Vancouver critics also named Alfonso Cuaron best director for sci-fi survival thriller Gravity, while Dallas Buyers Club‘s Jared Leto earned the best supporting actor prize.

The 70-year-old Mexican American singer, or at least the film about him, has been heralded by one film critics group in Canada.

The Vancouver Film Critics Circle has just announced the nominees for its 13th annual awards; and the group has nominated Searching for Sugar Man for Best Documentary.

The critically acclaimed film, directed by Malik Bendjelloul, will face off against Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry and How to Survive a Plague.

Meanwhile, the French fantasy drama film Holy Motors, starring Eva Mendes, was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category, along with Amour and The Intouchables.

The Vancouver Film Critics Circle awards ceremony will be held on January 7, 2013.
