Avatar Entertainment Acquires Worldwide Rights to Vadhir Derbez’s Erotic Thriller “SVGS”

Avatar Entertainment has acquired the worldwide rights to the 31-year-old Mexican actor and Elyfer Torres’s erotic thriller SVGS and is shopping them at the Cannes Market.

Vadhir Derbez,The Jorge Xolalpa-written and directed film, pronounced ‘Savages,’ follows a young couple, who on the night of celebrating their anniversary, decide to test the strength of their relationship and push each other to their mental and physical limits. What was supposed to be a romantic night takes a deadly turn.

Derbez recently starred in The Seventh Day alongside Guy Pearce and has in the past year completed shooting for Jesse Johnson’s White Elephant starring Bruce Willis and John Malkovich and “SVGS” and shot a pilot for HBO Max’s unscripted television series From Sloppy to Papi.

Torres was in Telemundo telenovela in Betty en NY and is currently starring in Netflix’s Guerra de Vecinos. She recently wrapped an untitled thriller, produced by Gary and Julie Auerbach.

Xolalpa shot the film, which is his sixth, over six days from within his own home. “I’ve always wanted to do a single-location, one-take film. Although I didn’t come close to that with SVGS, we do open the film with a 20-page single take shot,” he said. “We shot 33 pages on our first day.”

Val Valdez and Sara Seligman produced the film, which comes from Xolalpa’s Mighty Aphrodite Pictures.

The 28-year-old Mexican actor will co-star with Guy Pearce in Justin P. Lange’s exorcism horror movie The Seventh Day.

Pitched as “Training Day meets The Exorcist,“ the film follows a renowned exorcist who teams up with a rookie priest for his first day of training. As they plunge deeper into hell on earth, the lines between good and evil blur, and their own demons emerge.

Lange is directing from his own script. His credits include 2018 Tribeca Film Festivalpremiere The Dark, which was nominated for a Fangoria Chainsaw Awardfor Best First Featurein 2019.

The project is being produced by Fangoria, the horror brand owned by Dallas-based producer Cinestate

Shooting is scheduled to start in  February in Dallas and New Orleans.

Derbez’s previous credits include How to Be a Latin Loverand Netflix’s Sense8.

He has more than 4.2 million followers on Instagramand has been acting in Spanish-language content since he was six.

“Finding someone who can go toe-to-toe with Guy Pearce is no small task, but I’m confident we’ve found our man with Vadhir Derbez,” said director Lange.

Eugenio Derbez & His Clan to Star in the Reality TV Series “De Viaje Con Los Derbez”

The 58-year-old Mexican actor, comedian and filmmakerand his thespian family are the subjects of the under-the-radar reality television series De Viaje Con Los Derbez.

The unscripted docu-comedy series, about a Derbez family vacation to Morocco, will launch in the U.S. and Puerto Rico on October 18 via Pantaya, Lionsgate and Hemisphere Media Group’s Spanish-language SVOD service, and will stream internationally on Amazon Prime Video.

The half-hour Spanish-language episodes will see a camera crew follow the Derbez family on the surprise vacation, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their adventures and escapades.

It will mark the first time the entire family of performers, who reach nearly 70M followers on social media, will be seen together on television.

The star-studded family consists of Derbez’s wife/actress Alessandra Rosaldo, their daughter Aitana, Derbez’s older actor sons Vadhir and José Eduardo and actress daughter Aislinn Derbez (La Casa de Las Flores) with her husband Mauricio Ochmann (Ya Veremos) and their daughter Kailani.

The series is produced in association withLionsgate by Derbez and Ben Odell’s 3Pas Studios as well as Katy Wallin and Stephanie Bloch Chambers’ Wallin Chambers Entertainment, who both have TV deals with Lionsgate. 3Pas Studios also has a first look deal with Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films.

Derbez, Odell, Wallin and Bloch Chambers will serve as executive producers.

Vadhir Derbez to Star in the Spanish-Language Remake of “50 First Dates,” “50 Primeras Citas”

The 26-year-old Mexican actor will star opposite Ximena Romo in Sony Pictures International Productions’ Spanish-language version of 50 First Dates.

50 Primeras Citas is the remake of the 2004 Adam SandlerDrew Barrymore romantic comedy about a woman with short-term memory loss and the guy who continues to court her even though she forgets him after each day they spend together. It grossed $196M worldwide.

The update begins shooting this week in the Dominican Republic with Mauricio T Valle adapting, directing and producing via his Le Petit Soldat Cinema.

Also starring is Alejandro Camacho (Everybody Loves Somebody).

Derbez, who will also executive produce, is the son of Spanish-language megastar Eugenio Derbez and has been very active recently. He appeared in his dad’s How To Be A Latin Lover and starred in 3 Idiots, the second-highest-grossing Mexican movie of 2017.

Next up, he’s starring in The Perfect Dress, a romantic comedy pitch from writer Ed Horowitz for which Sony Pictures International Productions was closing a deal last month.

Romo’s credits include Everybody Loves Somebody, I’m Gonna Explode, Black Sheep and soap El Color De La Passion.

Lionsgate & Pantelion Films to Release Higareda’s Spanish Comedy “3 Idiotas” in June

Martha Higareda is hitting the road this summer…

Lionsgate and Pantelion Films will release the Spanish-language comedy 3 Idiotas, starring the 33-year-old Mexican actress on June 2.

Directed by Carlos Bolado, the film centers on two nerdy friends and their arch rival from college who go in search of a long lost buddy who disappeared on graduation day.

The film, in which the characters relive college life and recall memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently even as the rest of the world called them idiots, also stars Alfonso Dosal, Christian Vázquez, Germán Valdés, Vadhir Derbez and Rodrigo Murray.

Higareda co-write the screenplay with Bolado, Antonio Abascal and Cory Brusseau. It is said to be a remake of the 2009 Bollywood film starring Indian superstar Aamir Khan.

Higareda’s film credits include McFarland, USA and No Manches Frida.
