Conde Joining NBCUniversal as an Executive Vice President

Cesar Conde is switching networks…

The 39-year-old Peruvian and Cuban American executive is set to join NBCUniversal as an Executive Vice President reporting to Chief Executive Officer Steve Burke.

Cesar Conde

Conde comes to NBCUniversal from Univision, where he served as President since 2009.

In this newly created role, Conde will focus on business development, strategic priorities and special business projects across the NBCUniversal portfolio of assets.

He’ll also oversee the International Group led by the newly appointed Chairman Kevin MacLellan. Conde will be a member of the NBCUniversal Executive Committee.

“Cesar is an impressive business executive with both traditional and emerging media expertise,” said Burke. “His experience leading multiple domestic and international businesses will be instrumental in maximizing all the opportunities to grow our portfolio.”

While at Univision, Conde served in a variety of senior executive capacities since joining the company in 2003, and is credited with transforming it into a leading global, multi-platform media brand. Under his leadership, Univision’s main broadcast network became the number one network in America regardless of language for the first time in the company’s 50-year history in July 2013 and experienced record ratings and profitability for that same year. During Conde’s tenure, Univision Networks’ portfolio grew from three broadcast and cable networks to 14 broadcast and cable networks. Additionally, he recently announced the launch of the company’s first-ever English language network, Fusion, a joint venture with Disney’s ABCNews.

Fernández Notches His Best Sales Week with New Album “Confidencias”

It’s an extra special quinceañera for Alejandro Fernández

The 42-year-old Mexican singer has notched the best sales week of his two-decade-plus career with his 15th studio album, Confidencias.

Alejandro Fernández

Released by Universal Music Latino, Fernández’s album debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums with 21,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The album’s impressive opening also impacts the Billboard 200 where it enters the chart at No. 19, making this Fernandez’s best position on the chart ever.

Confidencias is only the second Latin album to breach the top 20 of the Billboard 200 this year; Earlier, Marc Anthony’s 3.0 debuted at No. 5 on August 10 with 39,000 copies. Now, 3.0 drops to No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums chart.

Fernandez’s previous best sales week was the January 10, 1998 frame when his Me Estoy Enamorando sold 20,000 Christmas-week units.

Confidencias is Fernandez’ fourth chart-topper behind Enamorando (12 weeks in 1998-99), Entre Tus Brazos (May 13, 2000) and Dos Mundos: Evolucion (Jan. 2, 2010).

Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti,” the album’s first single, featuring Christina Aguilera, serves as the theme song to Univision’s new soap opera La Tempestad and sits at its peak of No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs, a rarity for a ballad in today’s more up-tempo dominated radio charts.

The Latin pop album also features a new rendition of Rod Stewart’s classic “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” featuring Stewart himself, as well as Alejandro’s first collaboration with his father Vicente Fernandez in over 20 years on “Me Olvide de Vivir.”

It’s a new day for Ana Maria Canseco

The 45-year-old Mexican television personality is returning to U.S. Spanish-language television to host Un nuevo dia, Telemundo’s morning show.

Ana Maria Canseco

Canseco’s participation in the program, which will begin on September 9, is a return to television after working for years hosting Univision’s morning show Despierta America.

Canseco, who hosted the program with Fernando Arau and Neida Sandoval, was on Despierta America for 13 years, until October 21, 2010. She and her co-hosts were all affected by the payroll cuts carried out by the network.

“I love to be part of this great team and share the screen with my new colleagues … (and providing) Latinos (with) happiness, good entertainment and fun,” she said.

Un Nuevo Dia fills a three-hour slot from Monday through Friday providing general news, as well as news about entertainment, health, fashion and beauty, along with a good dose of humor.

Canseco joins the current team of presenters made up of Adamari Lopez, Rashel Diaz, Omar Germenos, Daniel Sarcos, Azucena Cierco, Alessandra Villegas, Chef James and Ramon Zayas.

Alazraqui Replacing Piolin in “Free Birds” Voice Cast

Carlos Alazraqui will be flying high in the near future…

The 51-year-old Argentine American voice actor and impressionist has replaced Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo in the voice cast of the computer animated 3D comedy Free Birds from Relativity Media and Reel FX Creative Studios.

Carlos Alazraqui

Alazraqui, best known for voicing the Taco Bell chihuahua, will have a supporting role in the voice cast along with Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler and George Takei.

His credits include voicing characters in the recently released Disney animated film Planes, Toy Story 3 and Happy Feet Two, as well as an acting role on Reno 911.

Sotelo hosted the nationally syndicated Piolin por la Manana radio program until Univision let him go July 22 after an employee made allegations of sexually harassment. Sotelo has denied the allegations.

Telenovela Producer Estrada Honored by Los Angeles City Council

She’s one of the leading telenovela producers in Latin America… And, now Carla Estrada is being recognized in the City of Angels for her industry impact.

The Mexican telenovela producer was honored on Friday by the city of Los Angeles for her audiovisual work and her support of the Hispanic community in the United States.

Carla Estrada

“The city council’s tribute to Carla Estrada is at the same time for the entire Hispanic community, because for people who speak both English and Spanish in Los Angeles, she has taken our culture to the next level with her telenovelas,” said Jose Huizar, councilman for Los Angeles’ 14th District.

After receiving the honor, Estrada said she was accepting the recognition “in the name of all Latinos who, with effort and dedication, have been able to survive here in the United States.”

“Through my work, what I’ve sent them on television is a little of their native land, a bit of its colors, its flavors, and I join them in the faraway love they have for so many relatives, for so many people they cannot have near them,” she said.

Estrada, who once appeared on People En Español‘s list of The 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the world, has worked as an executive producer on more than 20 telenovelas, as well as other entertainment programs for Televisa in her more than 30-year career.

Notable among her productions are 1987’s Quinceañera starring Adela Noriega and Ernesto Laguardia, 1993’s Los Parientes Pobres with Lucero and Laguardia, 2003’s Amor Real and 2009’s Sortilegio.

Amor Real shocked the world by having higher ratings than all of the other television shows in America; placing Univision ahead of American networks like NBC and ABC.

“When I started working on the production of shows in Mexico 35 years ago, only men were in charge of production and direction,” Estrada recalled.

“But the biggest obstacle I had were the women, because many of them refused to take orders from another woman, and they made me cry and want to throw in the towel…but I didn’t leave, which is why I’m the first woman telenovela producer in Mexico,” said Estrada, who saw the Mexican government place a statue of her in one of Mexico City’s most important parks back in 2005.

Reyes Named VP Marketing at New Fusion Network

Anhelo Reyes’ next role will bring plenty of cultural fusion

The Latina television executive has been named VP Marketing at ABC and Univision‘s new network Fusion, which is aimed at young English-speaking Hispanics in the U.S.

Anhelo Reyes

Based in Miami, Reyes will oversee branding, marketing and promotions at Fusion, which is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2013.

Reyes most recently served as VP Strategic Property Planning and Marketing at Nickelodeon, where she worked on campaigns for series like SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles.

She also has worked at the Recording Academy and the National Association of Hispanic Publications.

The CW Looking to Remake the Hit Venezuelan Telenovela “Juana la virgen”

Following the crossover success of ABC’s Ugly Betty and Lifetime’s Devious Maids, the CW is looking to develop its own Spanish telenovela remake.

The network, in one of its first buys of the coming season, has put in development Jane the Virgin, a drama based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgen.

Juana la virgen

Jennie Snyder Urman, the creator of the CW’s short-lived drama series Emily Owens, MD, will write the adaptation for CBS Television Studios.

Jane the Virgin centers on Jane, a hard-working, religious girl who, due to a series of outrageous events, is accidentally artificially inseminated.

Juana la virgen, created by Perla Farias, was a hit in its original run on Venezuelan broadcaster RCTV in 2002, where it drew an average of 39.1% share, topping the competition by a wide margin.

The telenovela, which starred Daniela Alvarado and Ricardo Álamo, also did very well in Brazil, Spain, Colombia and Mexico and has been translated into 9 languages.

In the U.S., Juana la virgen aired on Univision and is available on Hulu.

Should Jane the Virgin become reality, it would join ABC’s Ugly Betty, which was based on the Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, and the upcoming Sofia Vergara-executive-produced ABC series Killer Women, based on the Argentine crime drama Mujeres asesinas.

This would be Juana‘s second remake, following an Indian version.

Robert Rodríguez is getting into business with Univision

The Spanish-language network has announced a new partnership with El Rey Network, the upcoming English-language cable network from the 44-year-old Mexican American filmmaker and John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa’s FactoryMade.

Robert Rodriguez

El Rey is set to launch at the end of the year via Comcast.

Univision will be responsible for the back-office operations, sales and distribution of the network.

The first shows from El Rey, according to the El Mariachi director, will be a TV version of his and Quentin Tarantino’s Dusk Till Dawn film and a still-unnamed action series developed by Fringe and Star Trek Into Darkness producers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci’s K/O Paper Products.

Levy to Star Opposite Jada Pinkett-Smith in “Salsa”

Sure, he competed on Dancing with the Stars… But this time William Levy will be dancing with a star.

The 32-year-old Cuban American actor and telenovela star has signed on to co-star opposite Jada Pinkett-Smith in Salsa, which the actress will also produce.

William Levy

Levy, the star of the popular telenovela Triunfo del Amor, will portray Pinkett-Smith’s salsa teacher in the film that tells the story of a woman at a turning point in her life. Through the dance of salsa she begins to get her life back on track.

Pinkett-Smith and Miguel Melendez will produce for Overbrook Entertainment, with production set to begin in the first quarter of 2014.

Levy recently wrapped two Lionsgate films: Addicted and Tyler Perry’s Single Moms Club. He’s currently shooting the remake of La Tormenta–called La Tempestad–for Univision.
