Goya Awards Nominees Announcement, Led by Ana Belen, Delayed Due to Spanish Snowstorm

Mother Nature is delaying Ana Belén’s big reveal…

The announcement of Spain’s 2021 Goya Awards nominations, led by the 69-year-old Spanish actress, has been rescheduled for next Monday, January 18 due to heavy snow in the country’s capital.

Ana Belen

The initial plan was for Belén and actor Dani Rovira to announce the Premios Goya nominees this morning, accompanied by the president of Spain’s Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, Mariano Barroso.

But the country’s extreme weather, which has caused widespread disruption, has led to Spanish Academy to delay the nominations for Spain’s version of the Academy Awards by a week.

Storm Filomena has blanketed parts of the country in snow, in particular the capital of Madrid, which saw up to 20 centimeteres in the last 24 hours, closing much of the city. At least three people have died in the adverse conditions, which is Spain’s heaviest snowfall for 50 years.

The Film Academy issued a notice that it had received official recommendation not to go ahead with the event.

The 35th Goyas ceremony is due to take place on March 6, 2021, with Spanish star Antonio Banderas hosting.

The snowfall began on Friday night, January 8, closing roads and leaving people stranded on the motorways around Madrid. The city’s airport was also closed, and all trains cancelled to and from the capital.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez issued a notice for people to stay home, while King Felipe and Queen Letizia posted a similar message on Twitter urging “extreme caution.”

Catarina Macario Announces Plans to Turn Pro

Catarina Macario is ready to go pro…

The Brazilian-born Stanford midfielder and promising prospect for the United States women’s national soccer team, has announced she’ll forgo her senior season for a professional career.

Catarina Macario

Macario is currently on the roster for the national team’s January camp, which started this weekend in Florida.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Macario said it is time for her to start a “new phase in life.”

While Macario has been linked to European club teams, she could opt to stay in the United States and play for the National Women’s Soccer League. The NWSL draft is set for Wednesday.

Macario became a U.S. citizen in October, but she hasn’t yet received approval from FIFA, soccer’s international governing body, to play in a match for the national team. The U.S. has a pair of games against Colombia scheduled for later this month.

The two-time winner of the MAC Hermann Trophy as the nation’s best college player, Macario had a Stanford single-season record of 32 goals and 23 assists last season. She was called up to her first national team camp the same day she became a citizen.

Macario is one of three college players on the 27-player camp roster, along with North Carolina‘s Emily Lloyd and Florida State‘s Jaelin Howell. Lloyd and Howell also could be eligible for next week’s NWSL draft because of a waiver from the NCAA that allows drafted players to remain with their college teams this spring and join the NWSL following the season.

Selena Gomez Calls Out Facebook, Twitter & More for Inability to Control Spread of Misinformation & Violent Rhetoric on Their Platforms

Selena Gomez has some harsh words for the leaders of the world’s biggest social media and web outlets…

After a massive crowd of rioters supporting President Donald Trump violently clashed with law enforcement Wednesday, storming the U.S. Capitol and sending the building into lockdown, both social media outlets imposed temporary freezes on Trump’s social media accounts.

Selena Gomez

Gomez, however, is calling out the tech giants for not doing enough, and for their inability to control the spread of misinformation and violent rhetoric on their platforms in recent months — which has allowed for both the President himself and his supporters to spread baseless claims of election fraud.

In a note shared to Twitter following the chaos in Washington D.C., Gomez specifically called out Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google as entities, plus YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and CEO of Alphabet Inc. and Google Sundar Pichai.

“Today is the result of allowing people with hate in their hearts to use platforms that should be used to bring people together and allow people to build community,” she wrote, before naming the aforementioned list of tech leaders. “You have all failed the American people today, and I hope you’re going to fix things moving forward.”

Gomez has openly shared her condemnation of Facebook’s misinformation before.

In December, she called out inaccuracies about the COVID-19 vaccine on the platform. “Scientific disinformation has and will cost lives,” she wrote. “@Facebook said they don’t allow lies about COVID and vaccines to be spread on their platforms. So how come all of this is still happening? Facebook is going to be responsible for thousands of deaths if they don’t take action now!”

Bad Bunny is wrestlin’ with a new video co-star…

The 26-year-old Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton singer/rapper has released the official music video for his latest single, “Booker T,” starring the song’s subject, the WWE wrestler of the same name.

“Booker T,” from the chart-topping El Último Tour Del Mundo album, has Bad Bunny saying he’s at the top of his game, akin to the wrestling legend Booker T.

In his new video, it’s not just a reference. He raps around Booker T himself, who steadily keeps his composure until finally giving in to a bit of dancing — and, of course, yelling out his signature phrase, “Can you dig it, sucka?”

“ESTOY EN MI PEAK,” Booker T wrote as he quoted the song on Twitter, where he proudly shared the new clip multiple times.

“EMPEZÓ EL 2021,” Bad Bunny tweeted with his video announcement.

Lido Pimienta Earns Spot on Barack Obama’s ‘Top Songs of 2020’ List

Lido Pimienta has received a special presidential seal of approval…

Barack Obama has closed out the year with a list of his top songs from 2020, with the 34-year-old Colombian Canadian musician, singer and songwriter making the list.

Lido Pimienta

Pimienta’s single “Nada,” featuring Li Saumet, is among the 30 singles selected by the former U.S. president, who says he got a little help from his daughter Sasha while making his playlist this year.

“Here are some of my favorite songs of the year. As usual, I had some valuable consultation from our family music guru, Sasha, to put this together. I hope you find a new song or two to listen to,” Obama wrote on Twitter.

But Pimienta isn’t the only Latinx artist to make the list…

Bad Bunny’s “La Dificil” earned a spot on Obama’s must-hear roster.

The 26-year-old Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton star’s single was released on February 29, 2020, and it was accompanied by a music video directed by Cliqua and Stillz.

Jhené Aiko’s warm weather anthem “Summer 2020” has also had Obama’s list.

The 32-year-old part Spanish and Dominican American singer and songwriter’s record, which samples Kool & The Gang‘s classic “Summer Madness,” is featured on the deluxe edition of Aiko’s Grammy-nominated third studio album, Chilombo.

Here’s the complete list of Obama’s song picks:

Canelo Alvarez Becomes Mexico’s First Unified Champion in Super Middleweight History

Canelo Alvarez is making history…

The 30-year-old Mexican professional boxer, the sport’s biggest superstar, put on a dominant display on Saturday night to end the 2020 major fight slate, cruising to a unanimous decision win over previously undefeated champion Callum Smith and winning the WBA, WBC and The Ring magazine super middleweight titles.

Canelo Alvarez

The scorecards read 119-109, 119-109 and 117-111, all for Alvarez.

In the process, Alvarez became the first unified champion from Mexico in super middleweight history.

In front of 15,000 fans (20% capacity) at the San Antonio Alamodome, Alvarez (54-1-2, 36 KOs) stalked Smith (27-1, 19 KOs), punishing him with an array of consistent jabs, uppercuts and hooks for 12 rounds.

“I’m the best in the world,” Alvarez said on the DAZN broadcast via an interpreter. “In the first round, I tried to see what he brings, the skills or whatever, but like you can see, I showed what I am.”

By the later rounds, the intrigue of the fight shifted from who would win to whether Smith would survive Alvarez’s devastating blows and go the distance.

The 6-foot-3 Smith had a 7-inch height advantage and an 8-inch reach advantage over the 5-foot-8 Alvarez. But it didn’t matter, as Alvarez was the big bully, eliminating the distance that Smith prefers and consistently pounding punches off the British boxer’s head and body.

“He was the better fighter tonight,” Smith said. “He’s smart. He’s clever. He sets you little traps and keeps you thinking. Before you know it, he’s closing the ground. He’s a good fighter, but I’m just a little disappointed with myself. His jab was really good. It surprised me a little bit. His defense was really good.”

Alvarez has now defeated two Smith brothers — knocking out older brother Liam Smith as a junior middleweight in 2016 and defeating Callum Smith on Saturday.

Alvarez — universally considered one of the top two pound-for-pound boxers in the world, boxing’s best-selling fighter, and already a four-division champion — now has won The Ring magazine title in three different weight classes.

He landed 43% of his punches and 57% of his power punches on Saturday, per CompuBox, in a complete performance in which his defense also shined. Smith landed only 18% of his punches and 24% of his power punches.

It was Alvarez’s first fight since parting ways with Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN after contractual disputes, and he returned to the ring for the first time in 13 months as his own promoter with little in-ring rust.

“I’M BACK!” he wrote as part of a Twitter post early Sunday morning.
