Camila Cabello is ready for an epic adventure south of the border…
The 22-year-old Cuban and Mexican singer has taken to social media to announce that the video for “South of the Border,” her collaboration with Ed Sheeran and Cardi B, will be “out soon.”
The Twitter and Instagram announcement, later posted by Sheeran, was coupled with a movie-inspired poster that previews the video.
The theatrical poster revealed that not only will Cabello, Sheeran and Cardi B be starring in the video, but they’ll also be joined by model Alexis Ren and actor Paul Karmiryan.
The five stars are posed in front of a beach background, with two cars and the lyric “Jump in that water, be free…” placed in front of them.
“South of the Border,” from Sheeran’s No.6 Collaborations Project, was released July 12. The flirtatious song, which features Cabello singing in both Spanish and English, was previously announced with childhood pictures of the stars and a lyric video. Cabello, a longtime fan of Sheeran’s, called the release “such a special moment for me.”
The 48-year-old half-Cuban Texas GOP Senator is set to meet with actress and activist Alyssa Milano on Tuesday to talk about gun reform, after they had a set of exchanges on Twitter over what’s needed to be done in the aftermath of mass shootings in Odessa and El Paso.
The details of the meeting haven’t been announced, but Milano will be in Washington next week.
“We don’t agree on this issue. But if we can talk with mutual respect & humility, maybe all of us come together to effect positive change,” she wrote on Twitter on Wednesday evening.
Cruz wrote that he was “looking forward” to the meeting, and added that “if all of us can together have more positive, civil discussion & debate on the substantive issues of the day, that would go a long way to helping unite and heal our divided Nation.”
Milano had originally proposed the meeting be live-streamed “so the American people can hear your bullshit 1st hand.” On Tuesday, Cruz responded by saying he would agree to a meeting “about uniting to stop gun violence & about theConstitution.”
Over the weekend, following a mass shooting in Odessa that killed seven people and injured 22, Milano criticized a Texas Republican lawmaker, Matt Schaefer, who said that gun control solutions would not stop a person “with evil intent.”
Milano wrote, “Can someone cite which passage of the Bible God states it is a god-given right to own a gun? This guy is unbelievable and is clearly owned by the gun lobby.”
Cruz then responded that “it is of course not the right to a modern-day firearm that is God-given but rather the right to Life & the right to Liberty. Essential to that right is the right to DEFEND your life & your family.”
When the U.S. Senatereturns to session next week, Democrats are expected to press Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring legislation to the floor to expand background checks. In the aftermath of the El Paso and Dayton, Ohio mass shootings, President Donald Trumpinitially indicated that he favored such a proposal, but he has appeared to back away from that stance, following a reported conversation with a top National Rifle Association official.
Mathew Littman, the president of the group 97% Gun Reform, said that the meeting between Cruz and Milano “are the kinds of things that should be happening more often. We shouldn’t be talking past each other. We should be talking to each other.”
He credited Milano and Cruz for agreeing to the meeting, adding “that they are willing to talk to someone who completely disagrees with them is what we should be doing.”
Littman said he has met with Milano to talk about gun reform, and said that she “is about the smartest person I have talked to on the gun issue.” “I really appreciate that Alyssa is willing to do this, but that is what Alyssa does.”
Spokespersons for Cruz and Milano didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on further details of the meeting.
Diego Maradonamay be heading back to the world of soccer…
The 58-year-old Argentine legend, the focus of an acclaimed documentary, is closing in on a return to management at Argentine first division club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.
Maradona met with the club this week and the deal is “80 percent” agreed, Maradona’s lawyer Matias Morlatells ESPN FC, with a definitive meeting set to take place on Thursday.
Maradona had admitted on Tuesday that he’d like to coach in his homeland, but on Wednesday denied that a deal had been signed with Gimnasia, or that he’d met with anyone at the club.
“I don’t think that toying with the hopes of the fans is ok,” wrote Maradona. “I still haven’t met with anyone.”
But Morla posted a video later on Wednesday of Maradona talking directly to Gimnasia fans: “I want to make clear that I’ve very recently undergone an operation. I did have contact with people from Gimnasia, but I’ve not spoken to anyone recently
“For them to have considered me … due to my achievements far away or because they are Maradona fans is a very beautiful thing, really touching and it fills my heart.”
Maradona then made a point of getting up and walking around to prove he is fit, after a right knee operation in late July.
“They say that I can’t move. Look! Look!” stressed Maradona in the video. “Am I ready to coach or not? All of you Lobo [Gimnasia] fans, I hold you here [points to heart].”
Maradona joined Mexican second division club Dorados de Sinaloaone year ago and led the team to consecutive Ascenso MXfinals in his two seasons, losing both to newly promoted Atletico San Luis— owned by Atletico Madrid— after extra time in the second leg.
But Maradona left in mid-June in order to undergo a knee operation, following indications he was happy in Mexico and wanted to continue, with Dorados also content with how things had gone.
Gimnasia is dead last in the Argentine league after five rounds of matches in the new season, having lost its last four games.
Maradona had invited his Argentina teammate Gabriel Batistutato be part of the coaching staff at Gimnasia and take training sessions, but the former striker declined the invitation due to a scheduled operation on Sept. 17 in Switzerland.
“I want to thank Diego Maradona for the offer I’d been waiting for for so long,” wrote Batistuta on Twitter. “I wish him all the best!”
The 28-year-old Cuban-born Cleveland Indians, who defected from Cuba in 2012, became an American citizen on Wednesday.
Puig posted a photo on Twitterwith the message: “Thank you God for this great opportunity to be an American citizen.”
Puig’s journey to the United States was long, dangerous and complicated. A star on the Cuban national team, he made four attempts to defect from Cuba before being successfully transported out of the country by an alien-smuggling-and-boat-theft ring with links to the Mexican cartel Los Zetas. He subsequently faced death threats and extortion attempts as a result of his escape.
He went to Mexico first, because if he had gone directly to the U.S., he would have been subject to the Major League Baseball draft. Puig established residency in Mexico, allowing him to negotiate a lucrative free-agent contract. Puig signed a seven-year, $42 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in June 2012, a record for a Cuban defector. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in December 2018 and came over to the Indians as part of a three-team deal on July 31.
A career .277 hitter with 131 home runs and 398 RBIs over seven seasons, Puig has gotten off to a good start with the Indians, hitting .357 with a home run and six RBIs in 11 games. He is currently serving a three-game suspension for his part in a brawl when he was with Cincinnati.
Puig is the fourth member of the Indians to become an American citizen this year, joining Carlos Santana, Oliver Perez and Hanley Ramirez, who was waived in April.
The 26-year-old half-Dominican American rap superstar and her rapper husband Offset are partnering with Muzik to design a set of headphones.
Cardi B took to Twitter earlier this week to reveal the partnership with MUZIK,as well as askher followers, “what style would you guys like?”
There’s no word on when the headphones will be released.
This isn’t Cardi B’s first brand collaboration. She’s delved into the fashion world many times, teaming up with Fashion Nova, Steve Maddenand Reebok in the past.
Anitta is hoping to join voices Cardi B… And, she already has the perfect track!
The 26-year-old Brazilian singer/songwriter heard that Cardi B had revealed that she’d like to collaborate with Anitta during an Instagram Live.
Anitta joked that the thought of the pairing with the 26-year-old half-Dominican American rap sensation made her faint from excitement.
“Okay @iamcardib. After I passed out listening you saying you would love to record with me, I gotta say that I have the perfect track for us,” Anitta wrote on Twitter. “I’ve seen you listening to Brazilian funk.”
In response to Anitta’s messages, Cardi B said she was game, as long as Anitta taught her some Portuguese.
Time has released the fifth annual roundup of the 25 most influential people on the Internet, with the Cuban-American Vox journalist/vlogger and video producer making the list of the personalities who have the biggest global impact on social media.
Maza is being recognized for speaking about being harassed online, and his quest to target the policy that empowered the culprits.
For two years, Maza was the focus of videos from popular right-wing commentator Steven Crowder, who repeatedly denigrated Maza’s sexual orientation and ethnicity—actions that appeared to violate YouTube’s terms of service. But when Maza reported Crowder, he says YouTube didn’t respond. So at the end of May, Maza went public with his struggles on Twitter. His thread quickly went viral, prompting a new wave of harassment from Crowder fans—and eventually, a pseudo-apology from Crowder and a response from YouTube, which demonetized Crowder’s channel.
YouTube stopped short of banning Crowder outright, arguing initially that, while some of Crowder’s comments were hurtful, its policies were intended to protect free expression, which can include offensive opinions.
In the days that followed Maza’s Twitter thread, YouTube did reveal plans to revisit its harassment policies. But Maza isn’t optimistic about systemic change. “Harassment is really good for engagement,” he tells Time.
But Maza isn’t the only Latino to make the list…
Cardi B’s rise to stardom can be traced back to Instagram, where she now has more than 47 million followers.
As much as the 26-year-old half-Dominican American rap sensation’s life has changed since the success of “Bodak Yellow,” Cardi B’s online presence has stayed consistent—confessional videos and memes between red carpet shots, concert footage and political commentary.
In January, Cardi B made headlines for posting a video criticizing President Donald Trumpfor not funding the government, “all for a f-cking wall.” That clip went viral, and even came to the attention of Sen. Chris Murphy and Sen. Brian Schatz, who publicly debated whether they should retweet the video. In the end, the lawmakers chose not to, but the video still racked up 20 million views on Instagram.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may be a junior member of the U.S. House of Representatives, but when it comes to social media aptitude, her superiority is practically unmatched.
The 29-year-old Puerto Rican politician and activist, who is simply referred to by her Twitterhandle “AOC,” has nearly 4.8 million followers on the platform, more than most members of theU.S. Congress.
In January, shortly after being sworn in as the youngest Congresswoman in U.S. history, Ocasio-Cortez co-hosted a session for her peers about social media best practices, explaining the importance of being “authentic.” And though she’s made some online missteps during her tenure on Capitol Hill— like identifying her Democratic colleague Rep. John Yarmuth as a Republican while slamming older male legislators — Ocasio-Cortez has also expertly harnessed viral tropes to draw attention to subcommittee hearings and granular policy debates that have typically been relegated to the confines of C-Span: an Instagram video of questions she asked at a hearing about cannabis in February has amassed over three million views.
Germán Garmendia is being recognized for his personality…
Since uploading his first skit to YouTubein 2011, the 29-year-old Chilean YouTuber, comedian and writer has earned more than 13 billion views, making him the world’s most popular Spanish-language YouTuber.
In his skits and over-the-top riffs, Garmendia mines humor from everyday topics; while describing how tough he is in a video about how to be sexy, for example, he noted that he only cried a little when Mufasa died in The Lion Kingand often pushes doors labeled “pull.”
Production values have risen on YouTube in the years since he got his start, but despite competition from bigger-budget operations, Garmendia’s main draw as he comments on memes, viral videos, and video games is still his personality.
As with many YouTubers, he has also provoked controversy, like when misogynistic comments he made in a 2014 gameplay video resurfaced in late 2018. But his subsequent apology was well-received, and his career hasn’t stalled: in fact, Garmendia released his first novel last year.
The 26-year-old half-Dominican American rap superstar admittedly “got carried away” during her headlining set at London’s Wireless Festival on Friday, July 5.
Midway through her performance, the “I Like It” rapper got so fired up that she tore off her long black wig and tossed it into the crowd, leaving her only with a wig cap on her head.
Later on social media, Cardi B admitted that she went a little too far and jokingly asked for fans to return the hairpiece.
“I GOT CARRIED AWAY …….I want my wig back:/ Dm me,” she wrote on Twitter, along with sharing a fan-caught video of the incident.
It didn’t take long for fans to joke about the wig-tossing fiasco on social media. “CARDIIII THAT WIG IS PROLLY ON EBAY RN SELLIN FOR MILLIONSSSSSS,” one fan wrote.
Cardi B also made headlines for bringing out Lil Nas X to perform his hit single “Old Town Road” during her Wireless set.
The 31-year-old part-Spanish and part-Dominican American singer has released her first musical offering of 2019 in the form of the emotive “Triggered” freestyle.
A dark accompanying visual sees Aiko staring into the abyss while pouring her soul out around some rocky terrain.
Aiko explained what kind of headspace she was in that led to the song’s creation on Twitterearlier this week.
“One night I was so deep in my feelings, I was afraid of what I might do. I didn’t want to revert to the same bad habits that have set me back time and time again,” she wrote. “I realized that instead of running away from my emotions… I needed to sit with them, express myself and say whatever came to mind. It was healing to say the least… and now I feel a bit more free.”
Fans immedieately started to speculate that she was addressing her contentious breakup with ex-boyfriend Big Sean, especially since she specifically used the word “trigger” regarding Sean Don when sending him love under one of his IG posts last month.
“You are so special. To me. To the world. While we’re both still on this planet I just want to say… I love you beyond measure. Even tho I get big mad and u trigger the fuck out of me. U make me feel. And I appreciate that,” Aiko stated. “Because I thought I was dead inside. My ego has no say when it comes to you. And my heart has been broken a thousand times just to expand. It always finds room for you.”
