Karol G Earns 16th No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Mi Ex Tenía Razón”

Karol G is celebrating her sweet sixteen

The 32-year-old Colombian singer has earned her 16th No. 1 on Billboard’Latin Airplay chart with “Mi Ex Tenía Razón,” which rises 3-1 in its seventh chart week to lead the October 7-dated ranking.

Karol G“Mi Ex Tenía Razón” was released on August 11 as part of Karol G’s Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season), which took her to No. 1 on Top Latin Albums (August 26-dated list).

The track arrives at the summit on the overall Latin Airplay after it earned 9.8 million audience impressions in the U.S. in the week ending September 28, according to Luminate, a 16% gain from the week prior.

It ejects Chencho Corleone’s “Un Cigarrillo” from the lead and sends it to No. 9, after one week in charge (6.41million in audience, down 28%)

With the new leader, Karol G becomes the first woman to achieve a No. 1 as a soloist, unaccompanied by any other act, in 2023. The last woman to do so was Rosalía, who accomplished the feat through “Despechá” in October 2022.

In total, among Karol G’s 16 No. 1s, she’s led the Latin Airplay chart five times, unaccompanied by another act. Her first leader overall was “Mi Cama,” with J Balvin, featuring Nicky Jam, in 2018.

Prior to “Mi Ex Tenia Razón,” “Provenza” became Karol G’s last totally solo ruler, for one week in charge in July 2022. In between, “TQG,” a collaboration with Shakira, spent two weeks at No. 1.

The new peak of “Mi Ex Tenia Razón” on Latin Airplay, arrives after its one-week coronation on Hot Latin Songs (August 26-dated list), where it dips 5-6 on the current chart with a 7% decrease in streams, to 7.56 million, and an 18% fall in sales during the same period.

Beyond its Latin Airplay coronation, “Mi Ex Tenia Razón” also pushes up Regional Mexican Airplay, climbing 39-23. The song earned Karol G a first entry on the chart when it debuted at No. 39 (September 30-dated list).

Shakira to Receive Video Vanguard Award at This Year’s MTV Video Music Awards

Shakira is being celebrated for leading the way…

The 46-year-old Colombian superstar singer-songwriter will receive the Video Vanguard Award at MTV‘s 2023 Video Music Awards on September 12, becoming the first South American artist to earn the award.

ShakiraShakira will accept the award and perform at the ceremony for the first time since 2006.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer is a four-time VMA winner and 30-time nominee.

She won her first VMA — the award for International Viewer’s Choice — Latin America (North) — in 2000 for “Ojos Así.” She snagged the same award in 2002 for “Whenever, Wherever/Suerte” and also scooped up the trophy for Best Choreography in a Video for 2006’s “Hips Don’t Lie” as well as Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration for 2007’s “Beautiful Liar” with Beyoncé.

Shakira has also earned three Grammys and 12 Latin Grammys in her career.

The Video Vanguard Award, named after Michael Jackson, went to Nicki Minaj last year. Previous winners include Beyoncé, Jennifer LopezKanye WestDavid BowieMadonna and RihannaThe Beatles and A Hard Day’s Night director Richard Lester won the award at the first VMAs in 1984.

Shakira is nominated for four VMAs this year: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration and Best Latin for “TQG” with Karol G, and Best Latin for “Acróstico.”

Earlier this year, her hit collaboration with Bizarrap, “Music Sessions Vol. 53,” set a number of streaming records on Spotify and YouTube.

Shakira first performed at the VMAs in 2002 with her rendition of “Objection (Tango),” and was the first artist to perform a song entirely in Spanish at the ceremony alongside Alejandro Sanz when they sang “La Tortura” in 2005.

Taylor Swift leads this year’s VMA nominations with eight, while SZA comes in second with six nominations. Nicki Minaj, Doja CatMiley CyrusSam SmithOlivia Rodrigo and Kim Petras each have five nominations, and Blackpink and Diddy tie Shakira’s four. Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin, and Stray Kids are confirmed to perform at the ceremony, with MTV announcing more performers soon.

Alejandro Fernández Earns 10th No. 1 on on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “No Es Que Me Quiera Ir”

It’s a perfect 10 for Alejandro Fernández.

The 52-year-old Mexican singer has collected his 10th No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “No Es Que Me Quiera Ir” rises 13-1 to lead the August 5-dated survey.

Alejandro FernandezThe song follows the two-week champ “Caballero,” his first career No. 1 this decade (Feb. 2020).

“No Es Que Me Quiera Ir” conquers Latin Airplay after it gained 9.1 million in audience impressions, a 50% rise from the week prior, earned in the U.S. during the July 21-27 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The song’s main supporters include Univision stations, KSCA Los Angeles and WOJO Chicago, as monitored by Mediabase, which provides Luminate data for Billboard charts.)

The ranchera singer, released May 19 and written by Eden Muñoz, ejects Prince Royce’s “Me EnRD” from the lead after its one term at No. 1, as the bachata dips 1-5 with 17% drop in audience impressions, to 8.4 million.

Further, “No Es Que Me Quiera Ir” earns Universal Music Latino/UMLE its second No. 1 in 2023, after the label dominated the chart with Karol G and Shakira’s “TQG” for two weeks between May and July.

As mentioned, with “No Es Que Me Quiera Ir” capturing the crown on Latin Airplay, Fernández scores his 10th ruler, the second-most among regional Mexican acts, trailing Marco Antonio Solis who continues to lead with 11 champs on his Latin Airplay account.

Plus, “No Es Que Me Quiera Ir” becomes his first win since “Cabaellero” in 2020. In between he’s placed five top 10s, for a total of 23 top 10s since “A Pesar de Todo” reached No. 10 high in December 1994.

Here’s a full recap of Fernández’s 10 leaders dating back to his first in 1997:

Peak, Title, Artist, Weeks at No. 1
Oct. 18, 1997, “Si Tú Supieras,” six
Dec. 27, 1997, “En El Jardín,” featuring Gloria Estefan, six
March 14, 1998, “No Se Olvidar,” eight
July 18, 1998, “Yo Nací Para Amarte,” five
Aug. 21, 1999, “Loco,” one
Dec. 1, 201, “Tantita Pena,” six
Oct. 23, 2004, “Me Dedique A Perderte,” two
Feb. 06, 2010, “Se Me Va La Voz,” one
Jan. 04, 2020, “Caballero,” two
Aug. 05, 2023, “No Es Que Me Quiera Ir,” one

Notably, “Que Me Quiera Ir” marks a new milestone achievement for singer-songwriter Eden Muñoz, who captures his first No. 1 on Latin Airplay as a songwriter. Previously he scored a No. 2 high as a songwriter through Banda Carnaval’s “Esa Vez Soy Yo” (Jan. 2020).

Elsewhere, “No Es Que Me Quiera Ir” advances 7-1 on Regional Mexican Airplay as the week’s Greatest Gainer. Fernández wins his sixth champ, the fifth-most among regional Mexican soloists.

Shakira Becomes First Artist to Hold Top Three Spots on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay Chart in Single Week

Shakira has earned another mention in the Latin music record books…

The 46-year-old Colombian superstar has become the first artist to occupy the top three ranks on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart in a single week.

ShakiraOn the survey dated July 29, “TQG,” with Karol G, holds strong at No. 1 for a 10th week; Shakira’s own “Acróstico” rises 3-2, returning to its best rank; and the Colombian superstar’s latest single “Copa Vacía,” with Manuel Turizo, advances 4-3 for a new high.

The Latin Pop Airplay chart, which began in 1994, reflects weekly audience impressions from a panel of over 150 Latin-formatted U.S. radio stations, as monitored by Mediabase, which provides Luminate data for Billboard charts.)

Despite “TQG” dipping 7% in audience impressions to 8.6 million in the latest tracking week, ending July 20, the team-up’s 10 weeks at No. 1 mark the second-most of 2023 – trailing only another Shakira song: Her Bizarrap collab “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” dominated for 12 weeks beginning in February (and currently holds at No. 7).

As “Acróstico” and “Copa Vacía” ascend to Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, radio airplay continues to grow for the songs. “Acróstico” takes the runner-up slot with a 2% gain in audience impressions, to 5.7 million, while “Copa Vacia” rises with a 33% boost, to 5.4 million, procuring the track the week’s Greatest Gainer honor.

Previously, Shakira and 16 other acts had held the top two on Latin Pop Airplay simultaneously.

The full list of such artists: Rauw Alejandro, Bad Bunny, Camilo, Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, Juan Luis Guerra 440, Enrique Iglesias, J Balvin, Juanes, Karol G, Maluma, Nicky Jam, Don Omar, Ozuna, Pitbull, Shakira and Tainy.

Prince Royce Earns 16th No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Me EnRD”

It’s a sweet sixteen for Prince Royce.

The 34-year-old Dominican American bachata star has logged his 16th No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart thanks to “Me EnRD,” which ascends 4-1 on the July 29-dated ranking.

Prince Royce,With the new champ, Royce matches Carlos Vives for the second-most No. 1s by a tropical act, both with 16.

“Wow, happy with another No. 1 on Latin Airplay filled with colleagues from all different type of genres,” Royce tells Billboard. “Means so much, especially a song about DR where bachata was born.”

According to Luminate, “Me EnRD” crowns the all-Latin genre tally with 10.22 million audience impressions earned in the U.S. during the July 14-20 tracking week; that’s a 21% gain from the week prior.

Plus, it ousts Karol G and Shakira’s “TQG” from its two-week lead with a 7% dip in impressions, to 8.6 million. It falls to No. 3.

As “Me EnRD” ascends to the summit, Royce becomes the only artist to top Latin Airplay, unaccompanied by any other act — among the 15 rulers — in 2023. The last artist to pull off the feat was Maluma when “Junio” reigned for one week in October 2022.

As mentioned, with “Me EnRD” advancing from No. 4, Royce banks his 16th ruler and enters a tie with Vives for the second-most No. 1s among tropical acts, trailing only Romeo Santos who continues at the helm with 21.

Here’s the scoreboard of rulers by tropical acts on Latin Airplay since the chart launched in 1994:

21, Romeo Santos
16, Carlos Vives
16, Prince Royce
14, Marc Anthony
11, Gloria Estefan
6, Juan Luis Guerra y 440

“Me EnRD” was released on April 20 and lands at the penthouse on Latin Airplay in its 13th week. It concurrently takes the lead on Tropical Airplay, where Royce collects his 23rd champ.

The 32-year-old Colombian superstar drew a record-breaking crowd during her performance in New York on Friday, June 30 as part of TODAY‘s Citi Concert Series.

Karol G“All of you are my dream come true,” she said onstage, where she performed in front of more than 15,000 people. “The last two years we’ve been growing as a movement and Latinos, we support what we do around the world so we’re here proud of all of us and it’s such an amazing moment for me. It’s my first time on this stage and we’re breaking records, mami.

Among the songs that Karol G performed were her Shakira-assisted smash hit “TQG” and “Mientras Me Curo del Cora,” both part of her history-making set Mañana Será Bonito — the first all-Spanish album by a female artist to top the Billboard 200.

Bad Bunny Earns Second No. 1 on Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. Charts with Grupo Frontera-Collab “Un x100to”

Bad Bunny is back atop the global charts…

The 29-year-old Puerto Rican superstar’s Grupo Frontera-collaboration “Un x100to” rises to No. 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts dated May 6.

Bad Bunny x Grupo FronteraIt’s the second leader for Bad Bunny on each list and the first for Grupo Frontera.

The track is the second Global 200 No. 1 and first Global Excl. U.S. leader for the Regional Mexican genre — as it dethrones the first such No. 1 on the former chart: Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” jumped to the top of the Global 200 a week earlier.

Meanwhile, thanks to “Un x100to,” “Ella Baila Sola” and Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma’s “La Bebe,” Regional Mexican (and Spanish-language) songs rank at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 simultaneously on both charts for the first time since the surveys began in September 2020.

Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny’s “Un x100to” leaps from No. 5 to No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, with 110.2 million streams (up 64%) and 4,000 sold (down 13%) worldwide April 21-27.

Bad Bunny adds his second, after “Dákiti,” with Jhay Cortez (now Jhayco), led for three weeks in November-December 2020.

It’s also the fifth all-Spanish-language leader on the list, after “Ella Baila Sola”; Karol G and Shakira’s “TQG,” which ruled for a week upon its debut in March; Bizarrap and Quevedo’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 52” (four weeks, 2022); and “Dakiti.”

“Ella Baila Sola” drops to No. 2 on the Global 100, although up 9% to 104.2 million streams and 5% to 3,000 sold worldwide.

Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma’s “La Bebe” holds at its No. 3 Global 200 best.

Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny’s “Un x100to” concurrently climbs 4-1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, with 82.3 million streams (up 73%) and 1,000 sold (up 17%) outside the U.S. April 21-27.

Grupo Frontera earns its first Global Excl. U.S. No. 1, while Bad Bunny tallies his second, after “Dakiti” (five weeks, November-December 2020).

“Un x100to” becomes the Global Excl. U.S. chart’s first Regional Mexican No. 1.

It’s additionally the sixth all-Spanish-language leader on the ranking, after Karol G and Shakira’s “TQG,” which reigned for a week upon its debut in March; Bizarrap and Quevedo’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 52” (six weeks, 2022); Anitta’s “Envolver” (one, 2022); “Dakiti”; and Maluma and The Weeknd’s “Hawái” (one, 2020).

Peso Pluma ranks at Nos. 2 and 3 on Global Excl. U.S.: “Ella Baila Sola,” with Eslabon Armado, holds at its No. 2 high and “La Bebe,” with Yng Lvcas, keeps at No. 3, also after reaching No. 2.

As on the Global 200, thanks to “Un x100to,” “Ella Baila Sola” and “La Bebe,” Regional Mexican, and Spanish-language, songs rank at Nos. 1-3 simultaneously for the first time since the Global Excl. U.S. chart originated.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.
