The honor goes to the player who has demonstrated spirit, determination and courage.

Ramos survived a kidnapping in his home country in 2011. Since then, he has come back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, a broken hamate bone in his left hand and repeated hamstring strains.

Ramos hit .267 with 11 homers and 47 RBIs in 88 games for the Nationals last season.

Members of the Conigliaro family will present the award next Thursday at the 76th Boston Baseball Writers’ Association of America‘s annual dinner.

Past winners include Jim Eisenreich, Dickie Thon, Jim Abbott and Jon Lester.
