Netflix ThisClose to Renewing Navarro’s “13 Reasons Why” for a Second Season

It appears that Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, starring the 25-year-old Puerto Rican actor, may be getting a second-season renewal soon, according to reports by Deadline.com.

The series, executive produced by Selena Gomez, is an adaption of the bestselling 2007 Young Aduly book by Jay Asher.

13 Reasons Why has been well received by critics and has created buzz on social media, quickly developing a following. There had been talks about how to extend the premise beyond Season 1.

The series follows teenager Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker (newcomer Katherine Langford) —his classmate and crush—who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Will Clay be one of them? If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list.

In addition to Navarro, who portrays Tony Padilla, the series also stars Kate Walsh, Brian D’Arcy James, Derek Luke, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman.

13 Reasons Why is directed by Oscar winner Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), written by Tony and Pulitzer Prize Winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal), and executive produced by Gomez.

The series is produced for Netflix by Paramount Television.

del Toro to Receive Filmmaker Award from Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE)

Guillermo del Toro is getting a reel special honor…

The 52-year-old Mexican filmmaker will receive the 2017 MPSE Filmmaker Award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE).

The organization will celebrate del Toro at the 64th annual Golden Reel Awards on February 19.

“Guillermo del Toro’s relentless imagination and energy provide inspiration to all of us in the entertainment industry,” MPSE president Tom McCarthy said in a statement. “He is constantly surprising, challenging and delighting audiences worldwide. We are extremely proud to recognize his contributions to our industry and culture with our Filmmaker Award.”

del Toro’s directing credits include Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, Oscar winner Pan’s Labyrinth and the forthcoming The Shape of Water. Earlier in his career, he worked as a special-effects makeup designer. He also has produced such titles as Biutiful, Kung Fu Panda 2, The Book of Life and Puss in Boots.

“Texturally and narratively, sound and image fuse in the cinematic experience,” said del Toro. “I have spent as much time on the mixing board as I have on a stage, shooting or in a color-correction suite grading the final film. To paraphrase Mark Twain: ‘The difference between the almost right sound and the right sound ’tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.’ I am thus delighted and honored to receive this award from my colleagues and partners in the storytelling experience.”

Netflix to Premiere the Gomez-Executive-Produced Series “13 Reasons Why” in March

It’s a Netflix and thrilled moment for Selena Gomez…

Netflix has scheduled the global premiere of 13 Reasons Why for March 31.

The highly anticipated adaption of the bestselling 2007 young adult book by Jay Asher is being executive produced by the 24-year-old Mexican American actress/singer.

Gomez announced the news via her Instagram account, along with a sneak peek at the series.

Netflix also released key art with the tagline “If you’re listening, you’re too late.”

Gomez to Executive Produce Latin-Themed Drama Project for Freeform

Selena Gomez is developing her Empire…

The 23-year-old half-Mexican American singer/actress has partnered with Aaron Kaplan and Freeform for a drama series project.

Described as a Latina Empire, the untitled drama, now in development, is set in a low income Latino neighborhood. It’s told through the eyes of an 18-year-old girl destined for greatness.

Gomez will serve as an executive producer on the project with Los Angeles high school senior Ana Cobarrubias serving as a consultant.

The project stems from an idea by Kaplan, who got the inspiration while attending The Zimmer Children’s Museum Discovery Award dinner last November. One of the speakers at the event was Cobarrubias, who captivated the audience, getting a standing ovation for her speech about making a difference in her poor East LA neighborhood and her determination to defy society’s expectations for someone like her by being a strong and confident young woman.

Inspired by Cobarrubia’s speech, Kaplan reached out to Burke with the idea for the series. Burke liked it, and the two approached Gomez, who came on board as an executive producer.

There are no plans for Gomez to act in the series. The show will be co-produced by Freeform and Universal Cable Prods.

Kaplan sought out Cobarrubias, who had said in her speech that she plans to pursue a career in cinematic arts so she could tell the stories of people from low-income neighborhoods like hers.

Gomez is also executive producing Netflix’s upcoming series 13 Reasons Why, which has set Tom McCarthy to direct the first two episodes.

Gonzalez Iñárritu to Lead Panel Discussion at Produced By: New York Conference

The 52-year-old Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker will be the featured speaker at the second Produced By: New York conference later this month.

The headlining panel, Producers’ Masterclass: An Adventurous Partnership with Alejandro G. Iñárritu, will feature the Oscar and Producers Guild Award-winning filmmaker alongside his producing team — Mary Parent, Steve Golin, and Brad Weston — as they talk about their latest film, The Revenant.

Brühl Becomes Producing Partner in Amusement Park Film

Daniel Brühl is ready to produce…

The 37-year-old half Spanish actor and Golden Globe nominee has become a partner at Amusement Park Film, a Berlin-based production company.

Brühl, the star of Rush and Inglourious Basterds, will join Amusement Park’s Malte Grunert and Klaus Dohle to develop and produce film and television projects, with a focus on English-language productions.

Brühl, who appears in Marvel‘s upcoming Captain America: Civil War, first worked with Grunert on A Most Wanted Man, Anton Corbijn‘s adaptation of the John Le Carre novel of the same name, which Amusement Park co-produced.

“For a few years now I have had the wish to involve myself in the creative and commercial process of filmmaking beyond my usual role as an actor,” said Brühl, who began his work at a young age in a German soap opera called Forbidden Love. “It was always clear that I wanted to do this in a partnership with people that shared the same taste and values. Being based in Berlin but working mostly internationally it took a while, but I am convinced I have now found the perfect partnership, both structurally as well as creatively.”

Added Grunert: “I always knew Daniel as a great actor, but as we got to know each other following the filming of A Most Wanted Man, we felt we shared the same taste and passion for working with talented filmmakers, at home in Germany as well as internationally. I think our networks of partners complement each other very well, as do our past experiences and approaches to the industry.”

Brühl will be an equal partner in Amusement Park with Grunert and Dohle, with Grunert running the day-to-day business as managing director. Dohle, who also produces under his Erfttal banner, has been an active investor in the German film business for many years.

Founded by Grunert in 2009, Amusement Park has produced or co-produced 11 feature films to date, including A Most Wanted Man and David Mackenzie’s Perfect Sense. Titles in the pipeline include Remainder, Omer Fast‘s adaptation of the Tom McCarthy bestseller, which is in post; new projects by Mackenzie, Lone Scherfig (An Education) and a new project by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, screenwriters on James Bond films Skyfall and the upcoming Spectre.

Grunert will attend the Toronto International Film Festival this week with Amusement Park’s Land of Mine, a Danish/German co-production set in the wake of World War II, which opens TIFF’s Platform section on Thursday, September 10.

Brühl will celebrate the world premiere of his latest film, Colonia, co-starring Emma Watson and directed by Florian Gallenberger, which bows in Toronto on September 13.
