Rosie Perez to Star in Apple TV+’s Bilingual Thriller Drama Series “Now and Then”

Rosie Perez is ready to thrill…

The 56-year-old Puerto Rican Oscar-nominated actress and activist has been cast in Apple TV+’s bilingual thriller Now and Then, a drama series that’ll be shot in Spanish and English.

In addition to Perez, who most recently appeared in The Flight Attendant and Birds of Prey, the stellar ensemble cast also includes Marina de Tavira (Roma), José María Yazpik (Narcos: Mexico), Maribel Verdú (Y tu mamá también, Pan’s Labyrinth), Manolo Cardona (Who Killed Sara?), Soledad Villamil (The Secret in their Eyes) and Željko Ivanek.

The series that hails from Bambú Producciones and creators Ramón Campos, Teresa Fernández-Valdés and Gema R. Neira, the team behind the Spanish series Velvet, Cable Girls and Gran Hotel. Gideon Raff will executive produce and direct the first two episodes.

Set in Miami, Now and Then explores the differences between youthful aspirations and the reality of adulthood, when the lives of a group of college best friends are forever changed after a celebratory weekend ends up with one of them dead. Now, 20 years later, the remaining five are reluctantly reunited by a threat that puts their seemingly perfect worlds at risk.

De Tavira will play Ana, a smart and ambitious woman who put her political career on hold to support her husband’s.

Perez is Flora, a talented detective obsessed with an unresolved case from 20 years ago, who will stop at nothing to discover the truth.

Yazpik portrays Pedro, a complex politician married to Ana, he feels entangled in a life that doesn’t belong to him.

Verdu plays Sofia, a strong self-made lawyer who’s life took an unexpected turn 20 years ago and is now hiding too many secrets.

Cardona portrays Marcos, a passionate surgeon who sacrificed his dreams for his family and friends.

Villamil is Daniela, an introspective artist who constantly struggles to overcome a traumatic event from her past.

Ivanek plays Sullivan, seasoned detective who keeps his partner Flora from getting into too much trouble, always operates based on evidence and logic.

The series will be written by Neira and Campos with their team. Campos and Fernández-Valdés will serve as showrunners. Bambú Producciones will produce for Apple TV+.

Marc Anthony’s Magnus Studios Developing Animated Children’s Series “Gloria (doesn’t) Know It All”

Marc Anthony is getting animated…

The 51-year-old Puerto Rican singer’s Magnus Studios, a division of his entertainment company Magnus Media, will develop and produce an animated children’s series aimed at children ages 4-8.

Gloria (doesn’t) Know It All will be produced in partnership with filmmaker and Academy Award winner Juan Jose Campanella‘s animation studio Mundoloco CGAand Lanugo Media.

The series, which will draw heavily on music and magic realism, tells the story of a 7-year-old little Alpaca sent to visit her grandparents in a magical town.

Anthony and Magnus COO Felipe Pimento, who is also head of Magnus Studios, will act as executive producers. Anthony will also be the series’ music executive producer, supervising the creation of all original songs and music for the show.

On their end, Campanella and Mundoloco co-founder Gaston Goraliwill act as executive producer and showrunner, respectively.

Campanella is best known for his film The Secret In Their Eyes, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.

“I am thrilled to start the new year with the announcement of a project that will highlight the splendor and diversity of our Latino culture for children everywhere and I am looking forward to inspire families and young generations with this story,” said Anthony in a statement.

Gloria (doesn’t) Know It Allwas co-created by Pimiento and Gorali with Carla Curieland Roberto Castro. Curiel and Castro, who are co-executive producers for Lanugo Media, said the story was inspired by their twin daughters Adriana and Emilia.

Gloriawill be the latest venture for an expanding Magnus Media, which also includes management, publishing and digital and video content divisions in addition to a sports unit and a talent agency. The company’s roster of acts includes Anthony, Gente de Zona, Fonseca and Mau y Ricky in addition to over 60 professional baseball players, including New York Yankees pitcher Aroldis Chapman and the Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero.

Hulu to Feature del Castillo’s “La Reina del Sur” & Other Telemundo & Sony TV Projects

Kate del Castillo will soon be the reina of Hulu…

Hulu has beefed up its Spanish-language offerings with deals that secure programming from Sony Pictures Television and co-owner Comcast’s Telemundo, including the 44-year-old Mexican actress’ popular telenovela La Reina del Sur.

The company didn’t disclose financial terms, but says both pacts are “multi-year.”

The first time agreement with Telemundo will give Hulu five series from its library. They include past episodes of La Reina del Sur, Celia, and Bajo El Mismo Cielo, which are available now. On April 15 Hulu will add the complete catalogs of Tierra de Reyes and La Patrona.

Meanwhile, Sony has provided telenovelas and teleseries including Lady, La Vendendora de Rosas, Doña Barbara, comedy series Los Beltran, and crime dramas El Mariachi, Metastasis and En la Boca del Lobo.

Films in the agreement include El Mariachi and The Secret in Their Eyes. Hulu also will have nine films from director Pedro Almodóvar, including The Skin I Live In, Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, All About My Mother, Bad Education, Broken Embraces, Talk to Her and Law of Desire.

Hulu’s deepening its video on demand online library as it prepares to introduce a live streaming service.

Quevedo Signs with More/Medavoy Management

The 28-year-old Argentine actress has signed with More/Medavoy Management, the relaunched company of Erwin More and Brian Medavoy.

Quevedo made her acting debut in the Oscar-winning foreign film The Secret in Their Eyes.

She also co-starred in Paul Haggis and David Simon’s HBO miniseries Show Me a Hero opposite Oscar Issac.

Quevedo continues to be repped by Innovative Artists.

Darin to Receive Honorary Platino Award

Ricardo Darin will soon be shining as bright as platinum…

The 59-year-old Argentine actor will be honored at the third edition of the Platino Awards, the Latin America equivalent of the Oscars, which will be held on July 24 in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

Darin, who starred in Argentina’s 2009 best foreign-language film Oscar winner The Secret in Their Eyes and the Cannes Film Festival 2014 hit Wild Tales, is one of the most popular actors in Latin America and one of the very few who has box-office appeal across the region.

His popularity also reaches the Spanish market, where he recently starred in Cesc Gay‘s Goya winner Truman, a role for which he’s also nominated for a Platino in the best actor category.

Darin was recently confirmed as the star of La cordillera, the next movie from Argentina’s ascending indie filmmaker Santiago Mitre. The film is Mitre’s follow-up to Critics’ Week winner Paulina and was selected for Cannes’ L’Atelier de la Cinefondation program. La cordillera is set during a three-day presidential summit in the Andes Mountains, and Darin will play the Argentine head of state.

The Honorary Platino will praise “the honesty, talent and charisma with which he has engrossed some of the most renowned films made in the last three decades of Ibero-American cinema,” according to a press release Thursday from the Platino Awards organization, led by EGEDA and producers federation FIPCA.

Previous recipients of the Honorary Platino were also actors: Antonio Banderas was honored in 2015 and Brazilian legend Sonia Braga (Aquarius) in 2014.

Argentina Submits Trapero’s “The Clan” as Its Foreign Language Oscar Entry

The 43-year-old Argentine filmmaker’s The Clan, which won the Best Director Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival after its world premiere there, has been selected as Argentina‘s entry in this year’s Foreign Language Oscar race.

The film about Argentina’s notorious Puccio crime family is produced by Spain’s Agustín Almodóvar and Pedro Almodóvar and their El Deseo production company.

It’s already a box office hit at home as El Clan, beating the record set by Argentina’s last Academy Award-winning film, 2009’s The Secret In Their Eyes.

And it played well in its North American premiere in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Platform sidebar earlier this month.

Days after Trapero’s Venice win, he was signed by CAA; Trapero has had two films nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Oscars, Lion’s Den and Carancho.

The film was released by 20th Century Fox with Fox International Pictures in Latin America, and Fox will release it in the U.S.

Campanella to Direct the USA Network’s Drama Pilot “Colony”

The 55-year-old Argentine filmmaker, who won the foreign language Oscar winner for The Secret In Their Eyes, is set to direct the USA Network’s drama pilot Colony.

Starring former Lost co-star Josh Holloway, the family drama/thriller centers on life in Los Angeles after a mysterious “foreign” occupation. Holloway will play the main character, Will Bowman, a former FBI agent who — to protect his family — is forced to collaborate with the occupational government to bring down the growing resistance movement inside the Los Angeles colony.

Colony, written and executive produced by Lost executive producer/showrunner Carlton Cuse and Ryan Condal, is a co-production between Legendary Television and Universal Cable Productions.

Campanella’s other credits include directing episodes of Halt and Catch Fire, House MD, 30 Rock and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Calle 13’s “Me Vieron Cruzar” to be Featured in Campanella’s Animated Film “Metegol”

Calle 13’s music is about to audiences even more animated than normal…

The Puerto Rican duo’s latest single “Me Vieron Cruzar” is featured in the animated film Metegol, which will be titled Foosbol in English markets.

Metegol is a new soccer-themed film by Argentine director Juan José Campanella. The filmmaker’s The Secret in Their Eyes won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film in 2010.

In “Metegol,” based on a story by Roberto Fontanarrosa, the tiny players on a foosball table come to life to battle a big game and help the movie’s underdog protagonist get a girl. The trailer reveals a quick-witted soccer-themed “Toy Story,” whose over-the-top Argentine characters will appeal to adults and kids. The movie premieres July 18 Argentina, with a release planned in the United States in the fall.

“Me Vieron Cruzar,” meantime, is a sweet song that sounds like the closest Calle 13 has come to a bona fide ballad, includes folkloric rhythms and chords from Argentina’s national anthem.

“We were able to create the spirit of being at the game, supporting your team… so that everything turns out all right,” rapper and vocalist René Pérez Joglar, also known as Residente, said in Spanish via a press release about the film.

“Like true champions, to win you have to be competitive, but being competitive is not the goal,” Péréz said, referring to his inspiration for the song in Metegol. “It’s about reaching the level that you’ve been striving for from the beginning.”

“Me Vieron Cruzar” will be included on Calle 13’s upcoming fifth album, set to be released in the fall, as well as on the movie soundtrack.

Calle 13 previously teamed with Campanella on a video for their track “La Vuelta al Mundo.”
