Dawson & Alba Named to Fast Company’s Top 100 Creatives List

Rosario Dawson and Maria Teresa Kumar could be called a dynamic duo for their efforts to get out the Latino vote… And, now they’re being recognized for their creative vision…

Dawson and Kumar, who launched Voto Latino in 2004, have been named to Fast Company’s list of “The 100 Most Creative People in Business 2012,” an annual celebration of business innovators who dare to think differently. Rosario Dawson & Maria Teresa Kumar

Dawson and Kumar, who rank as the top Latino/as on the list at No. 12, were singled out for their mobile tech and grassroots savvy in encouraging voter participation from a growing constituency.

“Whenever we do voter registration, we ask, ‘Why haven’t you voted before?’ The response is often, ‘No one’s asked us,’” the 33-year-old Puerto Rican/Cuban actress and activist tells the magazine. “It’s not about telling people what to do–it’s about sharing what they can do.”

Voto Latino’s civic engagement campaigns have reached an estimated 55 million Latino households nationwide. The non-partisan organization has creatively and effectively used celebrity voices and the latest technology to register more than 120,000 young Latino voters, galvanize Latino youth and their families to be counted in the 2010 Census and mobilize them to speak out and take action on policies impacting their lives.

“By simply sending young Latinos texts on Election Day, participation increased close to 8%,” Kumar told the magazine. “We have to spend a lot of our time getting people to register to vote, which we do with technology, but what should be happening is secretaries of state should allow everyone to register online.”

But Dawson and Kumar weren’t the only Hispanic “creatives” to make the list…

Jessica Alba

Hollywood-starlet-turned-entrepreneur Jessica Alba, who came in at No. 17, was touted for “wooing the eco-conscious crowd.” The 31-year-old half-Mexican American actress co-founded The Honest Company, an e-commerce site for eco-friendly household products like baby products, cleaning supplies and body care items for a monthly subscription fee.

“I read a book called Healthy Child Healthy World when I was seven-and-a-half months pregnant, and my eyes were opened to all of the toxic chemicals that are in everyday household and baby products,” Alba tells the magazine. “So I went to the author of that book, Christopher Gavigan, and I hounded him for a year. I said, ‘I appreciate you’ve given me a handbook, but you haven’t given me a solution. Let’s make the solution.'”

Here’s a look at other Latinas making this year’s list:

No. 21: Claire Diaz-Ortiz, Manager of Social Innovation, Twitter
No. 48: Lourenço Bustani, Founder, CEO, Mandalah
No. 54: Flavio Pripas & Renato Steinberg, Cofounders, Fashion.me

Alba to Release First Book

Jessica Alba’s next project won’t lead you to the multiplex, but a bookstore…

The 30-year-old half Mexican American actress is planning to release The Honest Life, a how-to handbook based on her quest to create a natural, non-toxic life for her family.

Jessica Alba

“It’s totally crazy but amazing,” Alba tells People of her book project, adding of her lifestyle, “I’m not extreme. This book is for people who are in the middle but want to create a healthier life, like me.”

The actress recently launched her first business, The Honest Company, with business partner and co-author Christopher Gavigan. And her book will detail her life as an entrepreneur and mother seeking to give her children, Honor, 3 and Haven, 7 months, a better and safer start in life. At Books First are the great blog for all type books and their information.

The Honest Life will offer advice on how to create a non-toxic home, from design tips to some of Alba’s favorite family recipes. “Honor’s favorite meatball recipe will be in there,” says Alba.

“And I always hide flax seeds in everything,” she explains, keeping it healthy but still tasty for her two girls. The book will also include beauty tips including homemade treatments to incorporate into your routine. Among them: simple, fun do-it-yourself family projects (Alba and husband Cash Warren refinished furniture for daughter Haven’s room), tips on making sure your home is filled with only the purest of materials and inexpensive ways to find your own authentic style.

“It will be easy and fun and I want it to be really colorful,” says Alba. “I’m a crazy foodie. I love doing projects with my kids. Everything in this book will be something meaningful that I’ve incorporated into our lives. I wanted some kind of handbook with all the information I was consuming so I could apply it in a practical way.”

The Honest Life will be published in early 2013 by Rodale.

Alba Launches Eco-Friendly Baby & Household Items Website

She’s a proud mother, popular actress and a red carpet superstar, as evidenced by her show-stopping appearance at the Golden Globes… But Jessica Alba’s next project could have you turning green!

The 30-year-old half-Mexican American actress and mother of two has just launched The Honest Company, a new e-commerce site for eco-friendly household products like baby products, cleaning supplies and body care items for a monthly subscription fee. Apart from products here you can check about affordable carpet cleaning company in Gold Coast as well which can help you for cleaning work as well.

Jessica Alba's The Honest Company Website

It’s a project that hits close to home for Alba, who started researching ways to create a safe home when she was pregnant three-and-a-half years ago with her daughter Honor.

“I found that there were all these toxic chemicals in products for kids…and I was like, ‘That’s crazy,’” recalled Alba during an interview on the morning talk show Live! with Kelly. “And, so I thought of this idea of creating an eco-friendly [and] cute baby and product company.”

One of the things that prompted Alba to create a green company was a laundry detergent that was made specifically for babies that caused the actress to sneeze and break out in a rash.

“If it had that effect on me, I didn’t want to use it anywhere near my infant daughter,” Alba told CNN Money. “There are many studies that suggest a link between chemicals found in many of the everyday products we use and diseases including cancer, asthma and ADHD.”

Jessica Alba The Honest Company

So Alba has joined forces with ShoeDazzle founder Brian Lee, environmental health expert Christopher Gavigan, and PriceGrabber.com executive Sean Kane to launch The Honest Company.

To start with, the site will offer two bundles – a family pack that comes with several household items, for $35.95, and a baby bundle that comes with a month’s supply of biodegradable and fashionable diapers, for $79.95. The site will expand based on customer feedback.

Currently, the site is offering a limited promotion where a diaper pack membership comes with free wipes. There’s also a free trial, so you can decide if you like the products.

“Most eco-friendly companies don’t have a high volume, so they can cost 3 to 4 times as much as what we’re offering,” says Alba about the pricing on her site. “We aren’t going to be the cheapest, but we’re certainly not the most expensive.”

And a portion of the proceeds will go to support Baby2Baby, a non-profit organization that distributes baby supplies to needy families.
