ABC Looking to Adapt Mexican Telenovela “Teresa” for American TV

Hollywood’s obsession with Mexican telenovelas continues…

It appears ABC is developing an adaptation of the popular telenovela Teresa, according to the The Hollywood Reporter.

Teresa Telenovela

From Saving Grace writer/executive producer Nancy Miller, the drama centers on an ambitious law student living a double life — one as an ambitious and smart law student who pretends to be like all the other wealthy kids at UCLA and another as an illegal immigrant living on the wrong side of the tracks.

The project, which has received a script commitment, hails from Lionsgate and Televisa.

Teresa first aired in 2010 and starred Angelique Boyer, Aarón Díaz and Sebastián Rulli. The telenovela ended its run in February 2011, with Univision broadcasting it for from April through October of the same year. That series was a remake of a 1959 telenovela with Maricruz Olivier, with a third attempted in 1989 with Salma Hayek in the lead role.

It’s the latest telenovela adaptation attempt at ABC, the same network that originally tried to bring Devious Maids to the small screen before ultimately passing on the project and letting Lifetime give the Roselyn Sanchez-starrer a lifeline.

Miller, meanwhile, most recently executive produced Lifetime’s short-lived Against the Wall. Her credits include The Closer and CSI: Miami.

Teresa comes as the network has found success with the Emily Van Camp-starrer Revenge, a soapy thriller the network moved to the plumb Sundays at 9 p.m. slot for its second season.

Prince’s ex-wife Mayte Garcia is about to get real

The 38-year-old Puerto Rican-Egyptian dancer and singer, who was married to Prince from 1996-2000, will star on VH1’s tentatively titled Hollywood Exes, alongside  Nicole Murphy (formerly Mrs. Eddie Murphy), Jessica Canseco (formerly Mrs. Jose Canseco), Sheree Fletcher (formerly Mrs. Will Smith) and Andrea Kelly (formerly Mrs. R Kelly).

Mayte Garcia

He continued, “Now these women must re-invent themselves again, stepping out of the long shadows cast by their famous husbands and supporting each other as they define the next stage of their lives – this time on their own terms.”

Hollywood Exes sets out to peel back the curtain on Cinderella tales gone wrong. These five women in particular have been friends for several years and are looking to make a name for themselves outside of their famous exes.

The unscripted hour-long series, which been granted a 10 episode order by the pop culture-themed network, is set to bow on VH1 this summer.

The Closer’s Cruz to Guest Star on White Collar

He’s played a beloved detective on TNT’s The Closer for seven seasons… And, now Raymond Cruz will be back behind the badge on another hit show…

The 50-year-old Mexican American actor, best known as The Closer’s Detective Julio Sanchez, will guest star on the upcoming season of White Collar, according to TVGuide.com.

Raymond Cruz

But don’t expect Cruz to be an exemplary lawman… He’ll play Sheriff Enrico Morales, a corrupt local official on a small island town who crosses paths with Neal (Matt Bomer) and Mozzie (Willie Garson). Neal and Mozzie were last seen fleeing from the FBI to an unknown locale in the Season 3 finale.

White Collar started production on Season 4 Monday in Puerto Rico, and is expected to return to the USA lineup this summer.

Cruz joins previously announced upcoming guests Mekhi Phifer, Gregg Henry and AliasMia Maestro.

Along with appearing on The Closer, which will wrap its seven season-run this summer, Cruz’s credits include My Name is Earl, Nip/Tuck and Breaking Bad.

Beatriz Cast in “The Smart One” Comedy Pilot

Stephanie Beatriz could be getting her big break in television—with a little help from Ellen DeGeneres

The Latina actress, who has spent several seasons with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, has been added as a cast regular on ABC‘s comedy pilot The Smart One, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Stephanie Beatriz

From Warner Bros. Television, the comedy pilot—starring Portia de Rossi and Malin Akerman revolves around Jude, a brilliant and successful woman (de Rossi) who begrudgingly goes to work for Candy, her less-brainy but more popular sister — a former beauty queen, weather girl and now big-city mayor (Akerman).

Beatriz, who guest starred on TNT’s The Closer, will play Natalee, Candy’s whip smart yet ditsy hairdresser who helped get the dim bulb elected mayor. She’s described as a cross between Octavia Spencer from The Help and Jennifer Coolidge from Legally Blonde.

Beatriz joins a cast that also includes David Arquette and Jean Smart.

Donald Todd will pen the project and executive produce alongside Lauren Corrao and de Rossi’s wife, DeGeneres.
