Ana María Orozco to Reprise Iconic Betty Role in “Betty La Fea” Sequel

Ana María Orozco is preparing for an Ugly return…

The 50-year-old Colombian actress will reprise her role in Betty La Fea, a sequel to the hit Colombian telenovela Yo Soy Betty, La Fea.

Ana María OrozcoBut Orozco, who portrayed Beatriz “Betty” Aurora Pinzón Solano in the original, won’t be the only person making a return in the sequel.

Jorge Enrique Abello, who portrayed Eco Moda CEO Armando Mendoza Sáenz, will also reprise his iconic role in Betty La Fea, which will debut on Amazon’s Prime Video in 2024.

Produced by Colombia’s Estudios RCN for Prime Video, the third season of the series picks up Betty’s story 20 years later when she’s a successful woman, mother and wife.

Still married to Armando (Abello) and trying to rebuild her relationship with her adolescent daughter, she battles the economic crisis of her family company and wonders whether the path she has chosen in life has really made her happy.

Directed by Mauricio Cruz Fortuna, Betty la Fea is written by Marta Betoldi, Juan Carlos Pérez and César Betancur.

The original series is hailed as the most successful telenovela of all time, having sold worldwide and spawning 20 remakes, the latest in South Africa.

The series’ overnight success was a testament to Orozco’s endearing performance and the talent of its creator, the late Fernando Gaitan, who imbued its characters with such universal humanity that they still resonate with young generations two and a half decades later. Rebelliously tender Betty transformed the world around her and with her Gaitan found a poignant twist to the Ugly Duckling trope.

“This is, I think, an homage to Fernando’s work. I’ve witnessed how this incredible writer’s room has taken his legacy and we’ve tried with immense care and respect to live up to the task. It is a huge challenge but I think we are in good hands,” Orozco commented.

She added “Even though Betty was so advanced for its time, there’s many elements that are very much from its time, from our culture, from our idiosyncrasy, issues that now, 20 years later we can address, to have a dialogue with a modern audience. I feel that her essence hasn’t changed but precisely because of this Betty surely poses many questions, She is now more mature, but life for a woman in her forties is never an easy challenge.”

Yo soy Betty, la fea had a healthy energy, and the character an enormous impact on  conventional beauty codes which explains why it became a global franchise with which all women can relate,” said Francisco Morales, who leads Prime Video’s team of contents strategy and acquisitions for Latin America.

Pedro Vasconcelos to Direct “Land of Shadows” Series About Romance of Two 17th Century Soldiers

Pedro Vasconcelos is soldiering forward with a story of forbidden love…

The 49-year-old Brazilian director and television actor will direct the Portuguese-Brazilian drama series Land of Shadows about the romance of two 17th Century soldiers, which is currently in development.

Pedro VasconcelosLand of Shadows will follow their blossoming but forbidden love during the 17th Century, when Brazil was a colony of the Kingdom of Portugal.

It’s based on No País das Sombras, a novel from Emmy winner and telenovela writer Aguinaldo Silva, who is supervising the text adaptation and will be executive producer.

Luiz Felipe Petruccelli is the writer of Land of Shadows and Diosual Entertainment the producer.

The show’s set in Olinda, a Brazilian village, during the Captaincy of Pernambuco in 1604 and 1605, and reveals how the soldiers’ equality puts them in opposition to Portugal’s Holy Office of the Inquisition. Side plots will include the persecution of New Christians, abuses against women and the romance between the wife of a sugar cane plantation lord and one of his slaves.

Approximately 70% of the production will take place in Portugal, which is beginning to emerge as a drama producing territory to watch. The show will have a large Brazilian and Portuguese cast but be shot completely in English.

Production is expected to begin early next year, though no streamer or network is attached at this stage.

“We endeavored to envelop the love between our protagonists in a lyrical setting that would awaken the same level of empathy in the audience as would any other story starring a heterosexual couple,” said Guto Colunga, who is the show’s general producer.

“We want the viewers to feel more than the virility we associate with Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain in our two Portuguese soldiers, we want them to experience the beauty, purity and intensity that is so clear in Romeo and Juliet’s romance.”

Colunga is CEO and founder of Brazilian producer Diosual Entertainment, which comprises film division Diosual Pictures Studios and Diosual Television Studios. The company is focused on Brazilian projects with international appeal.

Vasconcelos won an International Emmy for Brazilian net Globo’s 2014-15 series Império, which was also from Silva.

Anahi & Her Fellow RBD Band Mates to Kick Off Reunion Tour Later This Year

It’s official… Anahi is re-rebelling

The 39-year-old Mexican actress and singer and her fellow RBD members have confirmed they’re coming out of retirement and launching a world tour.

RBDSlated to kick off later this year, it will mark the best-selling group’s highly-anticipated reunion since disbanding in December 2008 after their last show in Madrid.

The Mexican pop band — comprised of AnahíDulce MaríaChristian ChavezMaite Perroni and Christopher von Uckermann (Alfonso Herrera will not join his bandmates) — is set to visit Mexico, Brazil and the U.S. In total, the 26-date stint will tour 10 stadiums and 16 arenas.

The Live Nation-produced trek will kick off in El Paso, Texas, at the Sun Bowl Stadium on August 25 and will make stops in key U.S. cities like Chicago, New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

“It’s a new era that makes us really excited and it’s a new opportunity to share the stage once again and feel a unique energy,” Perroni tells Billboard. “There’re cycles in life and each one of us had to focus on our careers as actors and musicians and that meant we had to give those projects time, energy and a lot of dedication. It also allowed each one of us to grow professionally and personally. Now, the time [for the reunion] is perfect because we’re now more conscious, more mature, we’ll enjoy it from a different perspective now as adults.”

The comeback tour announcement comes a month after the band’s social media accounts shared a minute-plus video, captioned “Soy Rebelde,” which combines a scene from the telenovela Rebelde and recent footage of the current five group members at an intimate dinner.

Conversations for a live, in-person tour had been happening sporadically but nothing ever came to fruition because of conflicting schedules. It wasn’t until late last year that the conversations became serious after all members attended Perroni’s wedding in October. “When I was planning the wedding, the DJ asked me which songs not to play and I strictly said, ‘No RBD songs,’” Perroni remembers. “I explained that I didn’t want my bandmates, who were my guests, to feel pressured into having to sing.”

Then, something unexpected happened: The day of the wedding, RBD members went to ask the DJ to play “Rebelde” and “Sálvame” and they all started singing in unison. “It was an incredible moment. A few days later we started a group chat, and all agreed it was time to have that reunion tour. We planned it all in a month and a half and here we are.”

When RBD last toured, in total it grossed $72.5 million and sold over 1.5 million tickets, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. On the Billboard charts, RBD had a total of seven entries on the Billboard 200 chart including Rebelde, Celestial and Nuestro Amor, and eight entries on Top Latin Albums with six hitting the top 10.

Over on Hot Latin Songs, the band had 10 total entries and out of those, five hit top 10.

“20 years later, we’re closing a cycle of our lives that was so important and so spectacular. Our intention this time around is to enjoy it to the fullest, to share, thank everyone and have some sort of closure that I don’t think we had last time around. We had a goodbye tour back then, but it didn’t feel like we really said goodbye.”

This time around, Anahí, Dulce María and Perroni will be touring as mothers. Anahí has two kids, Dulce María one and Perroni recently announced she’s expecting her first child. “I’m preparing myself physically and mentally for this new stage in my life, which will be challenging but a great opportunity as well. My friends, Dulce and Anahí, who already have experience in motherhood will be there to guide me and give me tips. It will be a very special year for all of us.”

Tickets for RBD’s Soy Rebelde Tour are set to go on sale January 27 at 10:00 am.
