Anjelah Johnson is bringing the laughs to HBO Max.
The 38-year-old Mexican & Native American stand-up comedian, actress and former MADtv cast member is hosting a multi-act special filmed during San Antonio’s HA Comedy Festival, the biggest Latinx comedy festival in the world.
HBO Max will premiere the special, filmed at the Empire Theatre in February, on Thursday, August 20.
The featured acts include Gina Brillon, David Del Rosario, Carmen Lynch, Monique Marvez, Pedro Salinas, Jesus Trejo and Mark Vierq.
Johnson, known her characters of Vietnamese nail salon employee Mỹ Linh/Tammy and rude fast food employee turned music star named Bon Qui Qui,has appeared on television inSuperstoreand Ugly Betty.
NBC has prdered four additional episodes of the 35-year-old Honduran American actress and Emmy-winner’s blue-collar comedy Superstore, bringing its Season 5 total to 22.
Superstorecontinues to be the unsung hero of the network’s Thursday comedy lineup with its solid ratings performance, leading to the additional episode order.
That is considered a full-season order, and, besides the first season, which was short as Superstore started off as a midseason replacement, the comedy has gotten full-season orders every year. It is expected to be the only NBC comedy series this season to produce 22 episodes.
It’s unclear why Superstore had a 18-episode fifth season pickup to begin with, but the back order is a vote of confidence to the series following the showrunner change at the end of Season 4, with creator Justin Spitzerstepping down and Gabe Miller& Jonathan Greentaking over.
So far in its fifth season, Superstore is averaging a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.9 million viewers overall in Live+7. It is NBC’s highest rated series on Thursday and the highest rated comedy.
The Season 5 premiere of Superstore has surged to a 2.8 rating in 18-49 and 6.7 million viewers to date when viewing on all platforms is counted, easily tripling the episode’s next-day Live+Same Day 0.8 rating in 18-49. Superstore ranks as one of NBC’s strongest digital performers with a 17% gain in its 18-49 audience on digital platforms this season versus last.
Superstore stars Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Mark McKinney, Lauren Ash,Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Bloomand Kaliko Kauahi. The comedy centers around Amy (Ferrera), who recently was promoted to be the store manager and is the glue holding the place together, and Jonah (Feldman), a dreamer determined to prove work doesn’t have to be boring.
Superstore was created by Spitzer, who serves as an executive producer with director Ruben Fleischer, David Bernadand Ferrera. Miller & Green serve as executive producers and co-showrunners. The series is produced by Universal Television, Spitzer Holding Companyand The District.
The Dominican American comedian and actor has been added to cast of CBS’ upcoming drama Tommy as a series regular.
Tommy, from theBull team of co-creator Paul Attanasio and producer Amblin Television, stars Edie Falco as Abigail “Tommy” Thomas, a former high-ranking NYPD officer who becomes the first female Chief of Police for Los Angeles. She uses her unflinching honesty and hardball tactics to navigate the social, political and national-security issues that converge with enforcing the law.
Caamaño plays an ebullient Dominican transplant from Tommy’s home city of New York, who becomes part of her security detail but also her off-the-shelf investigator as she solves crimes in pursuit of the truth.
The series-regular cast also includes Michael Chernus, Adelaide Clemens, Russell G. Jones, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Lucy Phillipand Joseph Lyle Taylor.
Caamaño previously wrote, produced and headlined his own semi-autobiographical comedy pilot for NBC,A Bronx Life.
His other credits include television appearances onSuperstore, Marvel’s Runaways andBrooklyn Nine-Nine.
NBC has ordered a fifth season of its critically acclaimed comedy series Superstore, starring the 34-year-old Honduran American actress.
The series has maintained solid ratings in its current season to date. In Live+7, Superstore is averaging a 1.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 4.4 million viewers overall its Thursday 8-8:30 pm timeslot against rival programming asThe Big Bang Theory, Grey’s Anatomy and NFL Thursday Night Football.
In delayed viewing, Superstore’s next-day 0.85 rating in adults 18-49 increases by 154% to 2.16 rating after seven days of linear and digital viewership.
The series also is a strong digital performer, deriving 44% of its live plus seven day plus digital rating in adults 18-49 from non-linear sources, the second biggest percentage on the NBC schedule behind only Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

The Latino actor stars opposite Magic Mike hunk Matt Bomer in the heartfelt drama Papi Chulo, a story that explores a friendship between two very different people.
Making its World Premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 8, Papi Chulois writer-director John Butler’s third feature to premiere at TIFF.
The film follows a single TV weatherman (Bomer) living in Los Angeles who is put on leave from work. While on leave, he tries to enjoy his time alone but realizes this solitary lifestyle isn’t for him. When he drives past a hardware store, he spots Ernesto (Patiño, in his first leading feature role), a middle-aged Latino migrant with a friendly face, and hires him to do some home repairs. Despite the language barrier, they develop an unexpected but profound friendship based on the everlasting need for connection.
The film is a new take on the buddy comedy with two very different people as it provides commentary on empathy, stereotypes, and xenophobia — two of today’s very timely topics.
Patiño’s previous credits include appearances on Superstore, Life in Pieces, The Bridgeand East Los High.
The 40-year-old Mexican American actor has landed a recurring role on Starz’s Latinx half-hour series Vida.
From creator/showrunner Tanya Saracho, Vida centers around two Mexican-American sisters from the Eastside of Los Angeles who couldn’t be more different from each other. Saracho will make her directorial debut in season two, which will delve deeper into the lives of Lyn (Melissa Barrera) and Emma (Mishel Prada), who return home to face the past and secrets left behind by their late mother as they search for their future.
Castillo, rose to acclaim after starring on HBO’s Looking, will portray Baco, the bar’s new handyman with a questionable past.
Meanwhile, Adrian Gonzalez has also landed a recurring role on the show.
The Latino actor will appear as Rudy, an L.A. city councilman who Lyn meets at a gym class.
Production is set to begin in and around the Los Angeles area on the expanded 10-episode second season.
Castillo’s credits include Atypical, Amexicano andWe the Animals; Gonzalez’s credits include Superstore and Your Family or Mine.

NBC has renewed hit comedySuperstore for a 22-episode fourth season, starring the 33-year-old Honduran American actress.
Created and written by Justin Spitzer, Superstore centers around Amy (Ferrera), the store’s most stalwart employee as well as the glue holding the place together. Jonah (Ben Feldman), who is often the target of his colleagues ribbing, is joined on the floor with his fellow associates, including sardonic Garrett (Colton Dunn), the ambitious Mateo (Nico Santos) and sweet teenager and new mom Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom). Overseeing the store is Glenn (Mark McKinney), the affable, clueless store manager, and Dina (Lauren Ash), the aggressive assistant manager who enforces Cloud 9 policy with an iron fist.
“Superstore is one of our signature NBC comedies, and we’re so pleased to be bringing it back for the 2018-19 season,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment.
The early renewal comes in the middle of Superstore’s 22-episode third season.

Season to date, Superstore is up 6% versus one year ago in adults 18-49 (1.7 rating) and +3% in total viewers (5.195 million), according to “most current” ratings averages from Nielsen.
Superstore is also a strong performer on alternative platforms, growing to a 2.9 in 18-49 when 35 days of non-linear viewership is included in the rating.
NBC has put in development the comedy American Alien, from the 33-year-old Honduran American actress/producer and Superstore star, Superstore co-executive producer Sierra Teller Ornelas, Teri Weinberg and Universal Television.
Written by Teller Ornelas, American Alien centers around Denise “Dee Dee” and Sonny Mendoza, a small-town brother-and-sister team who struggle to keep their working-class jobs while also protecting vulnerable space aliens from everyday pitfalls in their hometown of Tucson, Arizona.
Teller Ornelas will executive produce with Ferrera and Weinberg. Universal Television, where Ferrera and Weinberg’s new production banner is based, is the studio.
Teller Ornelas is a Navajo-Mexican writer who began her television career in the Disney Fellowship Program. She is currently a co-executive producer on NBC’s Superstore, in which Ferrera stars and also executive produces. Teller Ornelas previously served as a producer on Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine and ABC’s Happy Endings. This is her first network sale.
This is Ferrera and Weinberg’s second sale under their new, yet-to-be-named production banner, which just signed a first-look deal with Universal Television. The duo has also have an untitled legal drama with former Revengeshowrunner Sunil Nayar set at NBC.
The 44-year-old Puerto Rican and Brazilian American broadcast journalist, the Today Show West Coast anchor and an NBC News correspondent, will appear on this season of NBC’s Hollywood Game Night.
Hosted by Glee star Jane Lynch, this game night show brings regular people face-to-face with celebrities.
In addition to Morales, this season’s famous contestants include Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley from This Is Us, Ben Feldman from Superstore, plus Michael Bolton, NE-YO, Mike Colter, Margaret Cho, Gabby Douglas, Taye Diggs, and RuPaul.
Hollywood Game Night will premiere on Monday, August 7 at 10 pm ET.
Following a promising second season premier, NBC’s Superstore, starring the 32-year-old Honduran-American actress,has received a Back 9 order.
That brings the sitcom’s Season 2 to a full-season 22 episodes.
As a midseason entry last season, Superstore got a 13-episode second-season order last spring but recently received a pickup for nine additional scripts in anticipation of a Back 9 episodic order.
“We’re very proud of Superstore and we were so happy to see fantastic viewing levels with the preview during the Olympics as well as last night’s ratings in its new Thursday anchor time period,” NBC’s Jennifer Salke said. “This is a show our audience loves.”
This week’s regular-time slot season-two 1.5 debut of Superstore following a special episodes during the Summer Olympics (3.0) marked NBC’s highest adult 18-49 rating by a Thursday comedy in nearly three years and improved on NBC’s average in the time period last season by +50%.
In its initial season in live+7, Superstore averaged a 2.1 rating in 18-49 and 6.6 million viewers overall, making it NBC’s top-rated new comedy since the 2013-14 season.
