Lionsgate Acquires U.S. Rights to Saldaña’s “Blood Ties”

Lionsgate’s Roadside Attractions has acquired the U.S. distribution rights for Blood Ties, Guillaume Canet’s English-language directorial debut starring the 34-year-old Puerto Rican/Dominican-American actress and Star Trek Into Darkness starlet.

Lionsgate reportedly paid $2 million to close the deal on the film, which centers on two brothers, one a cop and one an ex-con.

It’s based on the French film Les Liens Du Sang, which starred Canet. He stayed behind the camera for this one with Saldaña, Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Maroin Cotillard, Domenick Lombardozzi, Mila Kunis, Matthias Schoenaerts and James Caan starring.

Rodriguez’s El Rey Network Partnering with Univision

Robert Rodríguez is getting into business with Univision

The Spanish-language network has announced a new partnership with El Rey Network, the upcoming English-language cable network from the 44-year-old Mexican American filmmaker and John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa’s FactoryMade.

El Rey is set to launch at the end of the year via Comcast. 

Univision will be responsible for the back-office operations, sales and distribution of the network.

“The El Rey Network is going to be the home of kick-ass entertainment,” said Rodriguez at Univision’s upfront presentation.

The first shows from El Rey, according to the El Mariachi director, will be a TV version of his and Quentin Tarantino’s Dusk Till Dawn film and a still-unnamed action series developed by Fringe and Star Trek Into Darkness producers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci’s K/O Paper Products.

The clip for Paramount Pictures’ follow-up the blockbuster hit sequel to 2009’s Star Trek reboot appeared before showings of Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful.

Saldaña is reprising her role as Nyota Uhura in the film.

She may be appearing in Star Trek Into Darkness in the near future, Zoë Saldaña there was nothing bleak about her Oscars gown. The 34-year-old Dominican/Puerto Rican actress turned heads in a gorgeous Alexis Mabille Couture dress.

The 34-year-old half-Puerto Rican & half-Dominican American actress and her Star Trek co-star Chris Pine will co-host the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Scientific and Technical Awards on Saturday, February 9, at The Beverly Hills Hotel.

Saldaña and Pine – who will be starring in the highly anticipated Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness –will present nine awards to 25 individual recipients during the evening’s festivities.

Portions of the Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation, produced this year by David Friendly, will be included in the Oscar telecast.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised live on ABC.

Saldaña has teamed up with producers Jane Startz and Aida Bernal to option the mystery thriller Hell or High Water.

The 34-year-old half-Puerto Rican & half-Dominican American actress and her sister Cisley’s Saldaña Productions will work with Jane Startz Productions and Bernal’s Spellbound Entertainment to bring the novel to the screen.

The companies are currently trying to figure out whether Joy Castro‘s debut novel will be made into a feature or a television series.

Hell or High Water follows New Orleans reporter Nola Céspedes as she is dragged into the city’s post-Katrina underworld on the trail of what she thinks will be her big scoop. The novel was released July 17 by Thomas Dunne Books and was named one of the best books of 2012 by The Kirkus Review.

Saldaña is starring in the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek Into Darkness, which will be released on May 17, 2013.

She’ll next be seen alongside Clive Owen in Blood Ties, directed by Guillaume Canet.

In the just released teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness – the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel to the blockbuster 2009 series reboot – the 34-year-old half-Puerto Rican & half-Dominican American actress sheds a few tears in one of her scenes in the trailer.

Saldaña, reprising her role as Uhura, is spotted with her hands in her face, being held tightly by a distraught Scotty (Simon Pegg). In another, she’s seen looking up at something in the sky.

Getting more attention in the trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch, as The Darkness. The BAFTA and Emmy-nominated Sherlock star looms large and destructive in the teaser. Even though his role is still unclear, Cumberbatch is definitely not a nice guy. And, he’s a major turncoat, taking on Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the Enterprise.

From the first look, his destruction is mighty, and it more than shatters what he calls their illusion of safety. Get ready for an extra teaser on December 17, for a few more morsels ahead of the first trailer.

Saldaña to Announce This Season’s Spirit Award Nominees

“And the nominees are…” That’s a line Zoë Saldaña will be repeating several times in the near future…

The 34-year-old half-Puerto Rican & half-Dominican American actress, who was recently named to Vogue’s 2012 Best Dressed list, will be announcing the nominees for the 2013 Spirit Awards on Tuesday, November 27.

Saldaña will be joined by Anna Kendrick and Common at the special nominee announcement event at the W Hollywood.

“Anna, Zoe and Common have become an integral part of the Film Independent family and we are honored to have them join us for this big moment to announce and celebrate the best independent artists of the year,” said Film Independent’s Sean McManus.

Categories for the Spirit Awards include Best Feature, Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay, Best Director, Best Screenplay, John Cassavetes Award (given to the best feature made for a budget under $500,000), Best Male Lead, Best Female Lead, Best Supporting Male, Best Supporting Female, Best Cinematography, Best International Film, Best Documentary and the Robert Altman Award.

In addition, there will be special Filmmaker Grants prizes that include the Someone to Watch Award, Stella Artois Truer Than Fiction Award, Piaget Producers Award and the Jameson FIND Your Audience Award.

Winners of the awards will be revealed on February 23 next year at a ceremony in Santa Monica that will air later that evening at 10 P.M. ET/PT on IFC.

Saldana, who has previously served as a presenter at past Spirit Awards events, will next appear in the highly-anticipated film Star Trek Into Darkness.
