Anitta Appears in This Year’s Edition of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit

It appears Anitta is doing swimmingly

The 28-year-old Brazilian singer/songwriter appears on the pages of this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, which launched online on Monday, July 19.

Anitta, SI Swimsuit

Anitta is one of three musicians appearing in the issue. The other two? Megan Thee Stallion, who becomes only the second musician ever to star on the cover of the issue, and R&B singer Tinashe. This is the 58th edition of SI Swimsuit.

For Latin artists like Anitta, being featured in SI Swimsuit can not only make their reach more global, but it can also make their brand more relatable, says Isabel Paz, publicity and promotions associate director at Warner Music Latina. Paz works with artists including Anitta, Justin Quiles and Sofia Reyes.

Anitta, SI Swimsuit

Warner Records worked with the global Warner Music Latin team to sign the “Girl From Rio” singer last June ahead of her U.S. debut album due this year.

“I think Sports Illustrated is such a big brand that it definitely has a global reach. We don’t have Sports Illustrated in our market, like a Spanish version,” Paz tells Billboard, adding that print coverage exposes fans to a multidimensional view of their favorite singers. “It also shows another side of the artist that perhaps we wouldn’t see if they wouldn’t have been featured there. If you see them in a sports-related magazine, then you’re able to discover that this artist also has that interest. I think it just makes them more well-rounded and perhaps shows a side that is not just them on stage, but it also lets you know that the artist is capable of doing something else. It humanizes them a bit, because you can relate to them further.”

While SI Swimsuit works to “redefine the cultural conversation around beauty by celebrating a diverse group of women,” according to the publication’s statement during the annual Miami runway show earlier in July, Paz believes it has the power to celebrate “the whole variety” of Latina artists. The question remains if SI Swimsuit will continue to break grounds with whom the magazine wants to feature on the cover and in its pages in the coming years, and how many of those models will come from the music industry.

Megan Thee Stallion, Tinashe and Anitta will take the stage and perform at the official launch event for the 2021 issue on July 23 and 24 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. SI Swimsuit partnered with Hard Rock International for the two-day series of festivities, including interactive daytime events and a red carpet before the blowout concert at Hard Rock Live.

SI Swimsuit also worked with Roc Nation, where all three artists have direct and indirect management ties, to book the talent featured in its pages. Anitta signed a worldwide management deal with Brandon Silverstein’s S10 Entertainment, which is a partner of Roc Nation, in August 2019.

Anitta’s “Girl From Rio” single has been getting steady rotation at top 40 and rhythmic radio, further helping to ensure the Brazilian superstar’s long overdue breakout in the United States, with special thanks to DaBaby for his guest verse on the remix.

The 2021 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue will be on newsstands on Thursday, July 22.

Miguel is sharing some simple things with his fans…

The 28-year-old half-Mexican American singer-songwriter has released the official music video for “Simple Things,” which he recorded earlier this year for Lena Dunham‘s HBO series Girls.

Miguel

Miguel keeps things simple in the black-and-white cinematic clip, which premiered on YouTube earlier this week.

It begins with Miguel leaving a party while at another place, his on-screen love interest, played by Sports Illustrated model Gigi Hadid, is seen leaving her hotel room.

The two walk through the streets and eventually meet on a beach, where they smile, laugh and spend the rest of the day together.

“Simple Things” appears in Girls Volume 2: All Adventurous Women Do…, the soundtrack album that also features songs by Lily Allen, Beckand Jenny Lewis, among others.

Miguel is currently working on his next studio album, which he expects to release this fall. The new record, his third studio effort, will serve as the follow-up to 2012’s critically acclaimed “Kaleidoscope Dream.”

Fernandez Inducted Into U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame

She may not be competing at this year’s Summer Olympics in London, but Lisa Fernandez still has plenty of reason to celebrate…

The 41-year-old half-Cuban/half-Puerto Rican softball star, a three-time gold medalist, has been inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, along with her 2004 U.S. Softball Team.

Lisa Fernandez

Dubbed the “Real Dream Team” on the cover of Sports Illustrated, the 2004 Olympic Team went 9-0 in Athens, a record that included eight consecutive shutouts and four run-rule victories. Along with Fernandez, the team roster included Latina players Crystl Bustos and Jessica Mendoza, as well as the team’s Latino head coach Mike Candrea.

Fernandez won gold medals in the 1996, 2000 and 2004 games and is the only pitcher ever to appear in three Olympic finales.

She earned the save in the final game of the 1996 Olympics as the U.S. team beat China 3-1 for her inaugural softball Olympic gold medal.

The U.S. team took the silver medal, losing gold to Japan, in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

In 2005 the International Olympic Committee voted to drop softball along with baseball from the Olympic program leaving the U.S. with three gold medals and Japan with one.

Softball advocates are trying to get the sport back by 2020, it won’t be played at the London games later this month or the Rio de Janeiro games in 2016.

Fernandez led the University of California, Los Angeles to the National Championship in softball during the 1990 and ’92 seasons, the Bruins softball team were runner ups during the ’91 and ’93 seasons.

She was a first team All-American during her four collegiate years at UCLA.

She currently serves as an assistant coach at her alma mater.

Hometown Héroe: Paducah’s Photography Star Matt Hernandez

Hometown Heroes Banner

He’s only been shooting professionally for about a year and a half, but Matt Hernandez is well on his way to becoming the next big name in sports photographer, especially with his photo editing techniques in the landscape photography settings space.

Matt Hernandez

The 31-year-old half-Mexican photographer recently claimed the People’s Choice award at the Google+ Photographers Conference in San Francisco with one of his Sports Illustrated-worthy images. Hernandez, who saw all three of his submitted images selected for public voting from more than 200 entries, was one of 18 finalists vying for the peer-determined prize.

“After I entered my work, I didn’t really think about the fact that I could win an award from it; I went for the sole purpose of bettering my work and building my social network,” admits Hernandez. “So it was such an honor to be recognized by my peers, and also by photographers that I look up to!”

Despite his award-winning skills behind the lens, Hernandez didn’t initially pursue a career in photography. The Paducah, Kentucky-native with a passion for art actually studied graphic design in college.

“It was a natural choice being that I always loved to draw,” says Hernandez, whose work was featured in Graphic Design USA magazine. “I started drawing at an early age, doodling superheroes and Nike shoes as a kid. I actually sent a shoe sketch to Nike and got a letter back from the company. I thought it was the coolest thing ever!”

After graduating from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Arts in studio art, Hernandez moved to Nashville to work as a professional designer.

“I designed print material for Sunday school curriculum, then I moved into the sports industry and began working at Athlon Sports,” recalls Hernandez, who won two consecutive design-related awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America for his work. “I almost didn’t go to my interview for Athlon because I was going to a Notre Dame football game! But I’m glad I did, because the job at Athlon helped me land jobs at IMG and the University of Kentucky Athletic Department.”

But it wasn’t until after spending seven years working as a professional graphic designer and game-changing move back to his hometown that Hernandez discovered his true calling.

“I was actually planning to start a web design company with my best friend. I had always been interested in photography, so I decided I would take a class while we were getting things settled for our new business venture,” says Hernandez. “I took a photography class at the local community college and when I came home, my wife pointed out how excited I was about it. It was then that I found my true passion for photography.”

To fuel his passion, Hernandez started going to local sporting events and taking action photos to see where it led him.

“I had a parent of one of the football players ask me to do a session for his son and a couple of his friends, and that’s all it took for my photography business to take off,” reveals Hernandez, who now shoots local sports teams, senior and family portraits and some weddings. “I’m doing some work for the local county schools, as well as some local businesses.”

Matt Hernandez's Photography

So what separates Hernandez from other photographers? It could very well be the way he’s been able to merge his creativity behind the camera with his graphic design skills to create awe-inspiring images.

“In the beginning, my Photoshop experience definitely helped me fix errors I made when I was still learning how to work the camera properly,” admits Hernandez. “As a designer, I already had a good sense of composition. And I’m big into composites, so my design background has helped me tremendously in developing composites that are realistic and artistic.”

Since catching the attention of his peers at the Google+ Photographers Conference with his realistically artistic images, Hernandez has seen his star rise, especially on social media pages like Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

“In a sense everyone is viewing these sites, so it’s basically free advertising,” declares Hernandez, who lists Scott Kelby, Jeremy Cowart, Peter Hurley, Joel Grimes and Dean Bradshaw among his favorites photographers. “People really get a feel for your work and your personality through interactions on these sites. If people see that you are a good, down-to-earth person, they want to work with you.”

Matt Hernandez's Photography

So what’s next for Hernandez, who recently conducted one of his most memorable shoots: photographing his one-year-old niece.

“Sports is my passion, so I’m hoping to start attracting clients outside of Paducah,” says Hernandez, who says the favorite part of his job is seeing his clients’ reactions when they see their photos. “My goal is to shift to photographing college and professional athletes, as well as some corporate sports photography.”

With his crazy-cool creativity, award-winning talent and inextinguishable passion, there’s no doubt Hernandez’s work will be featured in Sports Illustrated in the near future.

Nadal Loses His Shirt in the New Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition

It isn’t uncommon to catch a shirtless Rafael Nadal on a tennis court… But, finding him sin camisa and pressed up against a supermodel is a whole other story!

The 25-year-old Spanish tennis star appears in the new Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition alongside Israeli model Bar Refaeli in an oh-so-steamy photo shoot.

Nadal was captured embracing the model, who covers her bare breasts with her arms in some of the photos, while lying down with him the tennis icon. Meanwhile, Nadal wears nothing but swimming trunks and a wristwatch in about 10 of the photos.

Refaeli said she was thrilled to have the chance to pose with Nadal in the Walter Iooss Jr.-directed photo shoot. And, she said in a video recorded by Sports Illustrated That Nadal could definitely be a great model, in addition to being a great tennis star.

“I was a little nervous, because normally when I work for Sports Illustrated it’s just me,” said the model, who during the intimate scenes reportedly joked around with Nadal.

The Spaniard, meantime, said that he had posed in a photo session in the past, but not one like this: “It was a new experience for me, I enjoyed it a lot.”
