Maluma’s “Borro Cassette” Enters YouTube’s Billion Views Club

The 27-year-old Colombian singer/songwriter’s “Borro Cassette” has crossed the one billion views mark on YouTube, scoring Maluma his seventh entry in the Billion Views Club.

Released in 2015, the track was part of Maluma’s chart-topping Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy album, which peaked at No. 1 on BillboardTop Latin Albums Chart dated November 20, 2015. “Borro Cassette” spent 40 weeks on the Hot Latin Songs chart, peaking at No. 3.

Other Maluma songs that have entered the billion views club include “Sin Contrato,” “Corazón,” “El Perdedor” and “Felices Los 4.”

News of his seventh entry in the billion views club comes as the “Hawái” singer has sparked confusion among his fans after feuding on Twitter with reality TV personality Scott Disick, who appears in Maluma’s new music video for his latest single “Sobrio.”

The 24-year-old Colombian superstar is set to receive the Extraordinary Evolution Award at this year’s Latin American Music Awards (Latin AMAs), Telemundo has announced.

Maluma is also confirmed to perform at the fourth annual show to be held from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, on October 25.

Maluma has placed 24 songs on the Billboard Latin Airplay chart, nine of which went to No. 1: “Borro Cassette” (2015), “El Perdedor” featuring Yandel (2016), “Sin Contrato” that featured a version with Fifth Harmony and another with Don Omar & Wisin (2017), “Vente Pa’ Ca” by Ricky Martin featuring Maluma (2016), Shakira’s “Chantaje” featuring Maluma (2016), “Felices los 4” (2017), “Corazón” with Nego do Borel (2018), “El Préstamo” (2018, leading for 2 weeks), and “El Clavo” by Prince Royce featuring Maluma (Sept. 1, 2018).

His sophomore album, Pretty Boy Dirty Boydebuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart in 2015, and his latest album, F.A.M.E.debuted at No. 1 this June and currently stands at No. 5 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart.

On social media, Maluma has reached an astonishing 17.5M subscribers on YouTube, 35.5M on Instagram, 5.6M on Facebook and 5.6M on Twitter.

Maluma Readying for English-Language Crossover with Next Album

Already one of the biggest names in Latin music, The 23-year-old Colombian singer is hoping to cross over to a wider audience with an upcoming album of Spanish and English music.

Maluma has already collaborated with some of Latin music’s most successful cross over talents, like Shakira and Ricky Martin.

“I’m trying to find the balance and do like, ‘Spanglish’ music or some songs in Spanish and others in English or do a translation,” Maluma told Reuters at the end of his U.S. tour in Los Angeles.

Maluma’s second album, Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy, was released in 2015 and became his breakout record, with hit singles “Borro Cassette” and “Sin Contrato.”

So far, his Spanish music has already earned him a legion of fans on social media. Maluma, whose real name is Juan Luis Londono Arias, is the most-followed Latin male artist on Instagram with more than 22 million fans.

“That connection that I have with my fans is really special and every time when I have moments, when I have free time, the only thing that I think about is what I’m going to post, what I’m going to say to my fans,” he said.

“I think that’s the key to being a success right now,” he added.

It was Maluma’s social media presence that brought him to the attention of pop star Selena Gomez, whom Maluma invited to collaborate on a new song.

“I found out that she was following me and I tried to be in touch with her to make some music but we can’t do it … maybe because she’s a busy girl and me too, I’m a really busy man, and maybe next time we can do something,” he said.

Maluma’s world tour next takes him to Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.

“I have a lot of surprises in store,” Maluma teased of his upcoming shows, although he remained tight-lipped about whether any special guest stars might join him on stage.

“I like to prepare each tour in a different way. Now that I’m heading to Mexico, I’m preparing something special for my fans in Mexico.”

With more than 24 million followers on Facebook, 20 million on Instagram and 3.5 million on Twitter, Maluma will give the audience an inside look on how he works his social media.

Recently, Maluma became the sixth act — and the youngest ever — to concurrently hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart, with “Sin contrato” and “Chantaje.” At 23-years-old he’s had five No. 1’s so far on the Latin Airplay chart, including “Borró cassette” and “El perdedor.”

The reggaetonero was also announced as a finalist for the 2017 Billboard Latin Music Awards. He has seven entries including social artist of the year and hot Latin songs artist of the year, male.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards are the culmination of the Billboard Latin Music Conference, taking place on April 24-27 at the Ritz Carlton Miami Beach.

Maluma Takes Top Two Spots on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

The Colombian singer has become only the sixth act to concurrently hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “Sin Contrato” soars 7-1 on the February 11-dated chart.

At the same time, the singer remains at No. 2 as a featured act on Shakira’s “Chantaje” for a third straight week.

At 23-years-old, he’s the youngest artist to rule the top two spots on the chart, and the first to do so since 2011.

Before Maluma, the youngest artist to conquer the No. 1 and No. 2 spots was Alejandro Fernandez, who at 25 ruled the chart for two straight weeks in January of 1998 with “En El Jardin,” featuring Gloria Estefan, at No. 1, while “Si Tu Supieras” was No. 2.

Selena spent the most weeks holding both top spots. Beginning four months after the Tejano superstar died, she spent six non-consecutive weeks at the top with “Tu Solo Tu” and “I Could Fall In Love,” between July and September in 1995. She would have been 24-years-old.

The most recent artist to achieve the feat was Pitbull on the October 15, 2011-dated list. He crowned the chart with “Rain On Me,” featuring Marc Anthony, while “Give Me Everything,” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, held the No. 2 slot.

The other acts to simultaneously hold the top two spots are Juan Luis Guerra and Juanes.

“Sin Contrato,” which boasts a version featuring Fifth Harmony and one featuring Don Omar and Wisin, as well as Maluma’s original solo version, rises to the top boosted by a 38 percent at the radio format (to 15.1 million audience impressions in the week ending Jan. 29, according to Nielsen Music).

Meanwhile, on the Hot Latin Songs chart (which blends airplay, sales and streams), “Sin Contrato” earns a new peak hopping 13-7, reaching the top 10 for the first time in its 22nd charting frame. In addition to the on-air increase, 1.4 million U.S. streams (down 1 percent, in the week ending Jan. 26) also support the climb, which marks the singer’s fifth top 10.

Elsewhere on the charts, Maluma vaults 25-5 on Top Latin Albums with Pretty Boy Dirty Boy, with 2,000 equivalent album units earned, during the chart’s first week as a consumption based ranking. The updated chart switched to a multi-metric methodology, blending pure album sales, track equivalent album (TEA) units, and streaming equivalent album (SEA) units. Under the previous album-sales-only formula, the set debuted at No. 1 on the Nov. 21, 2015 chart. The jump marks the first time that the set returns to the top five since its arrival.

Finally, Maluma also lifts 14-10 on the Social 50 chart, which is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound, and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia, and Tumblr. He previously peaked at No. 7 on the December 24 ranking.

Shakira’s “Chantaje” Video Ranks No. 1 on YouTube’s Music Global Top 100

The 39-year-old Colombian superstar is closing the year as the No. 1 artist on YouTube’s Music Global Top 100.

Shakira currently ranks No. 1 on the chart dated December 15 with the official music video for her new single “Chantaje” featuring Maluma with 57.6 million views during the period from December 9-15, a 17.8% increase over the previous week.

Shakira’s sultry clip also leads as the top video of the year with more than 268 million views (and counting).

But Shakira isn’t the only Latin artist to make the Top 10 for the week…

Ricky Martin ranks at No. 5 on the chart with the official music video for his single “Vente Pa’Ca,” featuring Maluma. The clip logged an additional 30.3 million views during the week.

Meanwhile, Daddy Yankee’s “Shaky Shaky” video comes in at No. 8 woth 29.6 million views during the week.

Further down the list: Carlos Vives and Shakira’s “La Bicicleta” video at No. 11, Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” video at No. 13, J Balvin’s “Safari” video at No. 14, Zion & Lennox’s “Otra Vez” video featuring J Balvin at No. 15, Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home” video at No. 17, and Maluma’s “Sin Contrato” video at No. 18.
