It’s a project that hits close to home for Alba, who started researching ways to create a safe home when she was pregnant three-and-a-half years ago with her daughter Honor.

“I found that there were all these toxic chemicals in products for kids…and I was like, ‘That’s crazy,’” recalled Alba during an interview on the morning talk show Live! with Kelly. “And, so I thought of this idea of creating an eco-friendly [and] cute baby and product company.”

One of the things that prompted Alba to create a green company was a laundry detergent that was made specifically for babies that caused the actress to sneeze and break out in a rash.

“If it had that effect on me, I didn’t want to use it anywhere near my infant daughter,” Alba told CNN Money. “There are many studies that suggest a link between chemicals found in many of the everyday products we use and diseases including cancer, asthma and ADHD.”

So Alba has joined forces with ShoeDazzle founder Brian Lee, environmental health expert Christopher Gavigan, and PriceGrabber.com executive Sean Kane to launch The Honest Company.

To start with, the site will offer two bundles – a family pack that comes with several household items, for $35.95, and a baby bundle that comes with a month’s supply of biodegradable and fashionable diapers, for $79.95. The site will expand based on customer feedback.

Currently, the site is offering a limited promotion where a diaper pack membership comes with free wipes. There’s also a free trial, so you can decide if you like the products.

“Most eco-friendly companies don’t have a high volume, so they can cost 3 to 4 times as much as what we’re offering,” says Alba about the pricing on her site. “We aren’t going to be the cheapest, but we’re certainly not the most expensive.”

And a portion of the proceeds will go to support Baby2Baby, a non-profit organization that distributes baby supplies to needy families.
