Sheila E. will perform on October 23 at Orchestra Hall with her father, percussionist Pete Escovedo, and youth performers from Minnesota.

The money will go to the Purple Philanthropy fund and be made available to community organizations via grants.

Prince died on April 21 of an opioid overdose. After his death, he was credited with a quiet activism that sometimes included anonymous donations to causes he deemed worthy.

Apollonia Appears as Surprise Guest at AMPAS’ “Purple Rain: Celebration”

Apollonia has come out of mouring…

The 57-year-old Mexican American actress, singer, former model and talent manager made her first public appearance since the passing of Prince on Monday night at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Apollonia

The occasion? Purple Rain: Celebration, a panel discussion/screening presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The evening’s surprise guest was joined by fellow cast members Jerome Benton and Jill Jones as well as the film’s writer/director Albert Magnoli, producer Robert Cavallo and costume designer Marie France.

Clips from the 57th Academy Awards — when Prince won the Oscar for original song score for Purple Rain — opened the evening.

Then noting that “not just a memory was being celebrated but also a milestone,” AMPAS president Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced that the brand new 35mm optical stereo print being shown would be added to the Academy’s permanent collection. Also setting the tone: an array of brilliant portraits of Prince displayed in the outer lobby, taken over the years by his personal photographer Afshin Shahidi.

Writer/director Reginald Hudlin, who produced the 88th Academy Awards this year, and Grammy-winning composer/bass guitarist Marcus Miller, moderated the ensuing 90-minute conversation.

Swapping stories about everything from the film’s early beginnings to the 90 still unreleased songs out of the 100 Prince had for the soundtrack to the absurd suggestion that John Travolta portray Prince, the panelists drew plenty of ooh’s and raucous laughter:

“I was the last person they saw for the audition [to find the Vanity replacement]. [Actress] Nia Peeples had just walked out of the room. I walked in and they asked me to take my shoes off. I thought wow, they’re into feet. Later I learned they were flying me to Minneapolis to meet Prince, who takes me out for a ride in a purple limo. He was very reserved and shy. I’m like Chatty Cathy. The next day we do an audition at First Avenue. I wore black spandex and a metal mesh blouse. Later there’s a knock at my hotel door and it’s Chick [Charles ‘Big Chick’ Huntsberry] from his security team: “The kid likes you. Play it cool,” said Apollonia.

“Prince called me and sang several pieces of [‘When Doves Cry’] into my answering machine and said not to erase it. When he came to my apartment, he headed straight to my machine. I still have that tape,” she added.

Dion will soon be taking an indefinite hiatus from her longtime residency at the resort and casino. And, TMZ says that the Colosseum is interested in signing Carey for “a very lucrative weekend engagement.”

They have reportedly offered the soon-to-be-single superstar $750,000 for two shows at the legendary venue.

Carey isn’t the only star wanted to play shows there. The Coloseum operator, AEG, is also targeting other big names like Adele, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Prince and Bruce Springsteen.

Earlier this month, Dion announced she’d put her Las Vegas residency on hold and canceled her remaining tour dates indefinitely to focus on her ailing husband, Rene Angelil.

“I want to devote every ounce of my strength and energy to my husband’s healing, and to do so, it’s important for me to dedicate this time to him and to our children,” she said in a statement.

Sheila E. shared the sun-drenched video exclusively with Billboard.

“The video was shot at my friend’s house, actor Jack Coleman, and on location in Los Angeles. The scene in which my dog Emma pulled me on the beach was not planned,” Shelia E. tells Billboard.

Last year Sheila E. released Sheila E. Icon, an album that celebrated her 40th anniversary in the music business.

Sheila E. was nominated for an American Music Award and two Grammy awards for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance Femalefor her iconic song “The Glamorous Life,” which was written by Prince.

During her noted career, Sheila E. has also collaborated with Lionel Richie, George Duke, Ringo Starr, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Hans Zimmer and Kanye West.

Aside from her new album, which was released last November, Sheila E. is preparing to release her first memoir The Beat of My Own Drum on September 2.

“You continue to break down barriers and inspire girls,” Rihanna said in a video montage, which included other noted artists, including Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Pitbull and Taylor Swift, sharing their thoughts on la Lopez and her remarkable career.

Before accepting the award from presenters, Ricky Martin and Iggy Azalea, Lopez took the stage for the second time in the night to offer a live debut performance of “First Love,” the second single from her upcoming album A.K.A.

Lopez kept the audience on her feet as she stepped back onto the stage to receive the Icon Award. “Oh my God! What the heck?” Lopez said as she held the award. “Music has always been my first love.”

She continued to thank God, her fans, family, friends, management (Benny Medina), Latinos (“para mi gente“) and wished for the “little ones” who were watching from home to follow their dreams.

Lopez is the first women to receive the BBMA accolade. Past winners of the Icon Award include Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder and Prince.

Earlier in the night, Lopez took the stage with long-time collaborator and friend Pitbull and Claudia Lette, to premiere the official anthem of this year’s FIFA World Cup, “We Are One (Ole Ola).”

“It Just Got Real,” Declares Mars at His Super Bowl Press Conference

Ready or not, Bruno Mars is about to take the biggest stage of his career this Super Bowl Sunday.

“I’ve never had to do a press conference before I perform, so it just got real, I guess!” joked the 28-year-old part-Puerto Rican singer at a Super Bowl press conference at Lincoln Center‘s Rose Theater in New York City.

Bruno Mars

Asked by Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams, reporting for omg! Insider, how he felt about accepting the invitation to headline the halftime show, Mars responded, “We were all watching you as a band last year when you performed with Beyonce, and we were wondering just like, ‘What if one day we get the call to do that?'” he said, later noting that his favorite halftime acts to date also include Prince, Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen. “It definitely came soon.”

Mars noted that he began rehearsing two nights ago, and was faced with the reality of the brutal cold in New Jersey and New York.

“There was a lot of things that happened — the microphone turns into a popsicle!” he explained. I’m grabbing the mic and it’s frozen! Just stuff like that that we’re taking into consideration, and getting some heaters on everything.”

But how will he keep his signature hairdo intact? “I got three gallons of hairspray in this thing, so I’m good!”

While he won’t be giving away any secrets about his set list — “It’s only a couple days away, they can hold tight,” he told reporters — Mars will stay true to his usual laid-back big-band aesthetic. “No matter where I perform, it’s my job to uplift the people — whether I’m performing at a graduation party, wedding, bar mitzvah, Grammys, Super Bowl, I’m gonna give it all I got,” he said of the gig. “I don’t trapeze and all that stuff. I hope to get people dancing and get people smiling. If you ever come to my shows, it’s just us up there with these songs and our instruments. I hope that’s enough.”

Mars also explained how he chose his co-performers. “The first band I thought of was the Red Hot Chili Peppers — I’ve been a fan of theirs for such a long time, I admire their career,” he recalled when the NFL presented him with the opportunity. “They’re a soulful band — and not just musically, but as people. I sat down with Flea, and he’s so passionate about music. Even to this day, doing it for so long, he’s still so passionate about creating music and performing. I want to surround myself with guys like that forever, and it’s an honor to share the stage with them. They’re one of my personal favorite bands of all time.”

He thanked the NFL for the rare chance to headline the televised event. “I still feel like a new artist — the NFL is such a prestigious stage, and they’re giving the new guy a shot. No, I haven’t been able to take it in, but I will. Come Sunday, I will.”

Miguel to Perform at This Year’s Billboard Music Awards

He made Kelly Clarkson do a double-take at this year’s Grammys… And, now Miguel will get the chance to make more celebrities take notice.

The 27-year-old half-Mexican singer will perform at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, which will air live on ABC from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas next month.

No word yet on what song Miguel, who avoided the sophomore slump with his critically acclaimed second album Kaleidoscope Dream, will perform.

But Miguel isn’t the only Hispanic artist set to perform…

Bruno Mars, who recently earned his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, has been scheduled to take the stage as well.

Other performers include Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Prince, who will be honored with the Billboard Icon Award during the broadcast.

In addition to performing, Miguel, Mars, Swift and Biever are each up for the new fan-driven Milestone Award, a fan-voted award.

The Band Perry and Pitbull are also up for Milestone honors. Voting is now open on Billboard.com/milestone.

The show will air Sunday, May 19 at 8/7c on ABC.

Marcil Returning to “General Hospital” for Brief Stint

It looks like Vanessa Marcil is checking back into General Hospital

The 44-year-old half-Mexican American actress will reprise her star-making role as Brenda Barrett Corinthos on ABC’s long-running soap opera, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Vanessa Marcil

The announcement comes as General Hospital continues to celebrate its 50th anniversary on the network.

GH hasn’t announced Marcil’s return date, but sources say it’ll happen sometime before April 1.

Marcil is expected to appear on the daytime soap for more than a few weeks, meaning fans will see the love triangle between Jax (Ingo Rademacher, who will be returning at the same time as Marcil), Brenda and Sonny (Maurice Benard).

Marcil and Rademacher are among the former cast members who’ve come back to help celebrate the soap’s milestone

Marcil originated the role of Brenda in 1992. After an eight-year absence from the show, she returned to GH for a year from 2010-11.

Marcil’s other credits include starring on NBC’s Las Vegas series, appearing in Prince’s “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” video and guest-starring on Hawaii Five-0.
