Apple TV+ Releases First Look Images of Ricky Martin’s New Series “Palm Royale”

Ricky Martin has entered Palm Beach’s elite circles…

Apple TV+ has released first look images of Kristen Wiig’s Palm Beach-set comedy series Palm Royale, starring the 51-year-old Puerto Rican Grammy-winning singer and Emmy-nominated actor.

Ricky Martin, Palm RoyaleThe series is set to premiere on March 20 on Apple TV+.

In addition to Wiig and Martin, the stellar ensemble cast includes Laura DernAllison Janney, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy and Kaia Gerber.

Loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie and produced by Apple Studios, Palm Royale is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, Palm Royale asks the same question that still baffles us today: “How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?” Set during the powder keg year of 1969, Palm Royale is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance to truly belong.

Ricky Martin, Palm RoyaleThe first three episodes will be released on March 20, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through May 8.

J.A. Bayona is also a first time Golden Globes nominee…

The 48-year-old Spanish film director is nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language for directing and writing the Spanish-language survival thriller film La sociedad de la nieve (Society of Snow), an adaptation of Pablo Vierci‘s book of the same name about the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster.

The 2024 Golden Globe Awards ceremony will take place January 7, 2024 at the Beverly Hilton and air live on CBS and Paramount+, after the network acquired rights following longtime home NBC not renewing its deal.

Last year, the Globes Globes returned to broadcast television after a forced hiatus due to issues around membership that eventually led to the wind-down of organizer the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Globes are now owned by longtime Globes producer Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge.

Among the changes, in addition to growing and diversifying its voter base, the Globes added new categories this year: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television.

Cris Abrego Elected Chairman of Television Academy

Cris Abrego is officially a chairman…

The Latino television producer, writer and television executive has been elected by the Television Academy’s Board of Governors as its chairman for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2024.

Cris AbregoAbrego succeeds Frank Scherma, who was no longer eligible after serving two terns as chairman.

It was previously reported that Abrego was poised to become Chairman of the Primetime Emmys organizer. He was reportedly running uncontested with strong internal support stemming from his work on the Academy’s executive committee and as chairman of the Television Academy Foundation since 2021.

Abrego is the longtime Banijay U.S. chief who recently set up his own production group with Eva Longoria. He is Chairman of Banijay Americas and oversees the North American and Latin American divisions of Banijay, which acquired Endemol Shine a few years ago.

Previously, Abrego served as CEO of Endemol Shine Holdings. As co-founder of 51 Minds Entertainment, Abrego is considered an early architect of the unscripted television genre. He grew that company from its boutique beginnings to a major unscripted studio acquired by Endemol five years later.

Last month, he also launched Hyphenate Media Group with Longoria, where he is CEO, a Banijay-backed venture that will develop and produce its own slate as well as invest in creator-led companies.

“I am honored to step into this role and feel the significant weight of responsibility in leading the Television Academy into the future, especially in this transformative moment in our business,” Abrego said. “As the entertainment ecosystem continues to undergo seismic shifts, I look forward to linking arms with our new officers and governors to lead our Academy and support our membership as we forge the path ahead together.”

The Academy also announced its newly elected officers and governors for the 2024-2025 term. Additionally, TV Academy President Maury McIntyre has added CEO to his title as he has renewed his contract through 2026. Chief Financial Officer Heather Cochran has also been named Chief Operating Officer. She and Chief Marketing Officer and SVP of Media & Brand Management Susan Spencer have extended their contracts through 2025

The incoming officers, elected by the Board of Governors, who will serve a two-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2024, through December 31, 2025, are: Sharon Lieblein, Vice Chair; Rickey Minor, 2nd Vice Chair; Allison Binder, Secretary; and Ann Leslie Uzdavinis, Treasurer.

The Academy’s newly elected governors will serve a two-year term through 2025 along with their co-governors who continue to serve two-year terms ending December 31, 2024.

The Emmys are set to air on Fox on January 15, 2024, pushed due to the writers and actors strikes. They will be preceded by the Creative Emmys the weekend before.

Marcello Hernandez Joins Cast of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” for Season 48

Marcello Hernandez will be working Saturday nights

The Cuban & Dominican American stand up comedian, writer and actor has joined the cast of Saturday Night Live as a featured player for Season 48.

Marcello HernandezHernandez joins a roster of new cast additions that includes Molly Kearney, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker.

Hernandez has opened for the likes of Tim Dillon and Gilbert Gottfried and appeared on Telemundo’s Acceso Total. The Miami comedian was recently named a “New Face of Comedy” at the prestigious Montreal “Just for Laughs” festival.  And locals may know Hernandez from his work with Only in Dade. He was the creative director of their lifestyle page.

“This will be transition year,” Lorne Michaels said backstage at the Primetime Emmys, where SNL won the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.

“Change years are always difficult but always exciting. There are new people. There are four new people, at least for now.”

The announcement comes after it was revealed in May that Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney were leaving the show at the end of Season 47 along with Pete Davidson. It later emerged that Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, the first-ever Latina cast member, and Aristotle Athari would not be returning either.

SNL returns on October 1 with three consecutive shows.

Michaels added that the pandemic kept the large cast together longer than perhaps expected.

“The pandemic sort of interfered with the national order of things. I think there was a bonding; people got very close,” he added. “When we did those at-home shows, you got to see everyone’s apartment where and how they lived. There was an intimacy and connection between audience and group. I couldn’t imagine we could work without that whole team so we kept going.”

Saturday Night Live is produced in association with Broadway Video.
