Rita Indiana Releases New LGBTT Anthem “Miedo”

Rita Indiana isn’t scared…

The 43-year-old queer Dominican singer-songwriter is celebrating Pride Month with a new reggaeton track “Miedo,” which pays homage to the LGBTT community.

“For the LGBTT community, fear (miedo) is something to be conquered every day, fear of violence, rejection and injustice,” she says. “This song is for my community, for whom love has always been a heroic trait.“

Known for poignant lyrics that often tackle topics like queerness, non-conforming sexuality and class, the singer and author of the Spanish novels Papi and Tentacle, was recently signed by Warner Chappell Music.

“Rita is an artist that fearlessly speaks her mind and tackles critical issues impacting society head on through her writing,” says Lazaro Hernandez, Warner Chappell Music‘s vp, a&r, U.S. & Latin America. “All of us at Warner Chappell are not only fans of her music, but are also fierce supporters of what she stands for. We look forward to helping amplify Rita’s voice and message through her music.”

Rita Indiana is set to release her forthcoming album later this year, her first solo set in a decade. Titled Mandinga Times, the album was produced by fellow Warner Chappell Music writer Eduardo Cabra, a.k.a. Visitante of Calle 13.

Pabllo Vittar is showing her pride in a big way…

The 25-year-old Brazilian drag queen and singer-songwriter, who has spoken out about the issues the LGBTQ+ community singer the beginning of her career, is now sharing her pride in a global way.

Vittar has been announced as one of the newest members of Calvin Klein‘s brand new Pride campaign, #PROUDINMYCALVINS. 

In the official photo released from the star’s shoot, Vittar’s big and bold drag persona is replaced with a minimally made-up Vittar posing in the brand’s yellow Pride crop top.

But Vittar isn’t the only proud artists named to the campaign lineup…

The campaign also includes queer stars Chella Man, MaryV, Tommy Dorfman, Jari Jones, Mina Gerges, Gia Woods, Reese King and Ama Elesser.

The shoot’s photographer made it clear the importance of having these stories told by queer people for queer people.

“Using a cast and crew that spans the full LGBTQ+ spectrum, we wanted to make sure that the entire community feels represented, included and celebrated,” said Ryan McGinley. “My goal is always to create honest photos that connect to the viewer on a human level and show the subject’s power and vulnerability as human beings. This mix is perhaps my most core value as an artist.”

Hulu to Stream Michael Cimino’s LGBTQ-Themed Series “Love, Victor”

Michael Cimino’s Love is headed to Hulu…

Love, Victor, starring the half-Puerto Rican actor, is moving from Disney+ to the Disney-controlled Hulu streaming service. It will debut in June, during LGBTQ Pride month.

The half-hour comedy, inspired by the acclaimed film Love, Simon, has been re-titled Love, Victor after its protagonist. 

The series, from This Is Us executive producers/co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who wrote the film, and 20th Century Fox Television, just wrapped production on its 10-episode first season. 

Hulu appears bullish on the show and has already commissioned a writers’ room to start exploring stories for a possible second season.

Hailed for its LGBTQ inclusivity, the 2018 Love, Simon,based on Becky Albertalli’s young adult novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, is a coming-of-age film about Simon, a closeted gay teen growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta.

The series centers on Victor (Cimino), a new student at Creekwood High School, the high school featured in the movie, on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation.

Love, Victor’s move from Disney+ to Hulu mirrors a similar relocation from Disney+ to Hulu of another series based on a movie, High Fidelity, headlined by Zoë Kravitz. 

Both involve realistic portrayal of issues faced by young adults that may not be appropriate for families to watch with their young kids, something that has become imperative for a Disney+ program.

Love, Victordepicts alcohol use, parents’ marital issues and sexual exploration. At Hulu, it will join several other comedic series with drama elements about teens in high school, including fellow Hulu originals PEN15 and Looking For Alaskaand Freeform’s Grown-ish,which streams on Hulu.

Pabllo Vittar Releases First English-Only Single “Flash Pose,” Featuring Charli XCX

Pabllo Vittar has released her first-ever single sung entirely in English.

The 24-year-old Brazilian singer and drag artist has joined voices with longtime collaborator Charli XCX on “Flash Pose.”

Touted as the first single off her upcoming album 111, “Flash Pose” is an infectious club anthem that feels eminently danceable, fun as hell and offers a new take on classic Pabllo-sounds. 

“Come over, come over baby/ Come in my picture, that’s right/ Because I wasn’t trying to get a nice picture by myself!” Vittar sings wickedly.

“I can’t describe the feeling — I am super excited! This is my first song in English and I have my friend Charli with me,” Vittar tells Billboard. “I couldn’t be happier right now.”

Vittar, who’s known for creating modern dancehall tracks in both Portuguese and Spanish, has become increasingly popular Stateside, even among non-multilingual listeners. 

Her fresh take on international pop music as well as her powerful message of queer empowerment — she’s an outspoken critic of Brazil’s conservative president, Jair Bolsonaro— has won her powerful accolades and brought her performances to Pride festivities across the U.S., including a headlining spot on Pride Island during WorldPride NYC 2019. 

“We have to show those kinds of people that you can be who you want and do whatever you want, as long as you respect other people’s space and feelings,” says Vittar. “I am not hurting anyone, I am trying to do my share to make a better world for everyone. I am an LGBTQ artist and I am proud of it, and no one can tell me what I can or cannot do.”

With her popularity in North America growing, it makes sense that Vittar’s next move would be to release an English-language song.

Rodriguez Earns Dorian Award Nomination for Her Starring Role on CW’s “Jane the Virgin”

Gina Rodriguez is feeling the love from the LGBT community…

The 30-year-old Puerto Rican actress, who picked up her first-ever Golden Globe award on Sunday, has earned special recognition from The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association.

Rodriguez earned a Dorian Award nomination from the association, which is comprised of more than 100 critics and entertainment journalists nationwide, in its The “We’re Wilde About You!” Rising Star Award category.

She earned her first-ever Dorian Award nomination for her critically acclaimed starring role on the CW’s Latino-themed series Jane the Virgin, which earned a nod in the Campy TV Show of the Year category.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu earned his latest Film Director of the Year nomination for helming the dark comedy Birdman, which earned for nods. Birdman was nominated for film of the year, along with Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game and Pride.

In all, the group – which says its mission is to honor content “from mainstream to gaystream” – unveiled nominations in 24 film and television categories.

Winners will be announced on January 20, with a Winners Toast set on March 1 in Los Angeles.
