Vita Ayala Developing Stories for DC’s Pride Month Anthology Comic Featuring LGBTQIA+ Characters

Vita Ayala is bringing a little pride to the comic book world…

The queer Afro-Latinx writer has joined the DC Pride creative time for DC’s June Pride Month, which included the launch of an 80-page anthology comic featuring LGBTQIA+ characters from across the DC Universe.

The anthology DC Pride #1 will feature cameos by Batwoman, Renee Montoya, Alan Scott, Midnighter, Apollo, Extraño, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Constantine, and more.

The DC Pride creative teams, and the characters they’re developing stories for, are:

  • Renee Montoya by Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridge
  • Batwoman (Kate Kane) by James Tynion IV & Trung Le Nguyen
  • Poison Ivy & Harley Quinn by Mariko Tamaki & Amy Reeder
  • Midnighter by Steve Orlando & Stephen Byrne
  • Flash of Earth-11 (Jess Chambers) by Danny Lore & Lisa Sterle
  • Green Lantern (Alan Scott) & Obsidian by Sam Johns & Klaus Janson
  • Aqualad (Jackson Hyde) by Andrew Wheeler & Luciano Vecchio
  • Dreamer by Nicole Maines & Rachel Stott
  • Pied Piper by Sina Grace, Ro Stein & Ted Brandt

The anthology will include full-page profiles of DCTV’s LGBTQIA+ characters and the actors who play them. A special bonus for fans of The CW’s Supergirl will be the introduction of the first comic book appearance of Dreamer, a trans woman superhero, in a story written by actor Nicole Maines, who plays Nia Nal/Dreamer on Supergirl.

Rounding out the DC Pride anthology is a forward by Marc Andreyko (Love is Love), and single-page pin-ups by artists Kris Anka, Sophie Campbell, Mildred Louis, Travis Moore, Nick Robles and Kevin Wada.

The DC Pride #1 cover is by Jim Lee, Scott Williams and Tamra Bonvillain.

DC will also release a series of Pride theed variant covers showcasing DC’s leading characters through the month of June, giving fans the opportunity to purchase comics featuring covers with Batman, Harley, Ivy, Superman, Wonder Woman, and more. These include:

DC will also present an eight-issue miniseries, Crush & Lobo, by Tamaki and Nahuelpan, spinning out of the pages of Teen Titans Academy. The book will debut with a cover by Kris Anka, a Pride variant cover by Yoshi Yoshitani, a 1:25 ratio variant by Christian Ward, plus a Dan Hipp team variant for participating retailers. The book will be published between June and January 2022.

DC will also publish GLAAD Media Award-nominated Suicide Squad: Bad Blood by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo (Nightwing) on April 27, DC’s gothic LGBTQIA+ romance Poison Ivy: Thorns by Kody Keplinger and Sara Kipin on June 1, and Mariko Tamaki and Yoshi Yoshitani’s YA graphic novel, I Am Not Starfire, will publish on July 27 as part of the publisher’s overall Pride plans in 2021.

Lois Lane by Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins, Far Sector by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell and You Brought Me The Ocean by Alex Sánchez and Julie Maroh have also been nominated for GLAAD Media Awards in 2021.

Jesse & Joy Sign Worldwide Deal with Warner Chappell Music Mexico for Catalog Rights

The Mexican brother sister duo, comprised of Jesse Huerta and Joy Huerta, have signed an exclusive worldwide deal for catalog rights with Warner Chappell Music Mexico, according to Billboard.

From grief and heartbreak to happiness and triumph, Jesse & Joy are “storytellers at their core, making music that speaks to the experiences we’ve all gone through,” says Carlos Ruiz, managing director, Warner Chappell Music Mexico.

“Aside from their musical talent, I’m inspired by how they use their voices to make a difference in the world and support their fellow Latinos, immigrants, and the LGBTQ+ community. All of us at Warner Chappell are thrilled they’ve entrusted us with their music and look forward to a wonderful journey ahead,” he adds.

Last year, Jesse & Joy initiated Pride Month with the release of their single “Love (Es Nuestro Idioma),” which spotlights love being a universal language. Both the song and video celebrated Pride Month and was a previous presentation for LGBTI organization Yaaj Mexico.

“The Warner Chappell team has done an impressive job amplifying Latin music on a global scale. They’re a publisher we trust and we look forward to our partnership together,” notes Jesse & Joy.

The Latin Grammy and Grammy-award winning duo, known for hits such as “¡Corre!,” ”Dueles,” and “Espacio Sideral,” are currently nominated for four Premio Lo Nuestro awards including pop group or duo of the year and album of the year for Aire.

Rita Indiana Releases New LGBTT Anthem “Miedo”

Rita Indiana isn’t scared…

The 43-year-old queer Dominican singer-songwriter is celebrating Pride Month with a new reggaeton track “Miedo,” which pays homage to the LGBTT community.

“For the LGBTT community, fear (miedo) is something to be conquered every day, fear of violence, rejection and injustice,” she says. “This song is for my community, for whom love has always been a heroic trait.“

Known for poignant lyrics that often tackle topics like queerness, non-conforming sexuality and class, the singer and author of the Spanish novels Papi and Tentacle, was recently signed by Warner Chappell Music.

“Rita is an artist that fearlessly speaks her mind and tackles critical issues impacting society head on through her writing,” says Lazaro Hernandez, Warner Chappell Music‘s vp, a&r, U.S. & Latin America. “All of us at Warner Chappell are not only fans of her music, but are also fierce supporters of what she stands for. We look forward to helping amplify Rita’s voice and message through her music.”

Rita Indiana is set to release her forthcoming album later this year, her first solo set in a decade. Titled Mandinga Times, the album was produced by fellow Warner Chappell Music writer Eduardo Cabra, a.k.a. Visitante of Calle 13.

Mala Rodriguez to Perform During the Virtual Edition of the Latin Alternative Music Conference

Mala Rodriguez is offering a special alternative for people stuck at home during this coronavirus pandemic.

The 41-year-old Spanish Latin Grammy-winning rapper will take this in this year’s Latin Alternative Music Conference, which will be held live online.

This year, the annual Latin Alternative Music Conference will officially kick off on Tuesday, June 9 withg a variety of virtual industry panels, workshops and showcases that will live.

Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic and as the nation begins to reopen gradually, the LAMC‘s five-day virtual conference includes timely panels like “The Future of Touring” with panelists Jordi Puig (OCESA), Phil Rodriguez (Move Concerts) and Sebastian De la Barra (Lotus Producciones).

And, “Mental Health and the Creative Community” presented by MusiCares and the Latin Grammys featuring Carla Morrison, Kany García, Ana Tijoux and Guaynaa.

LAMC’s Talks with Billboard Latin will feature Leila Cobo‘s fireside chats with Walter Kolm and ChocQuibTown‘s Gloria “Goyo” Martínez.’

Rodriguez will perform on June 9 as part of peermusic‘s showcase. Other participating artists include Thee Sinseers, Gaby Moreno and Lido Pimienta.

Francisca Valenzuela, Tatiana Hazel, Los Caligaris, among others will perform during the LAMC. 

On closing night, LAMC will celebrate Pride Month with performances by Kany García, Mabiland, Circo and Javiera Mena.

“Providing a forum to discuss the issues we face and the potential solutions that lie ahead is key as we look towards the future,” LAMC founder Tomas Cookman said in a previous statement. “Although the days ahead may be slightly different for a time, we should always keep in mind there is very much a future as music is a human and global emotion. We are lending our hand by making the conference free for all and having a team of professionals join us in making sure the LAMC experience is as informative and technologically seamless as can be.”

Jesse & Joy are spreading some Love this Pride Month…

The Mexican brother & sister duo, comprised of Jesse Eduardo Huerta Uecke and Tirzah Joy Huerta Uecke, kicked off Pride Monthby releasing “Love (Es Nuestro Idioma),” a new track featured on their new album Aire.

“Our music will always be there to remind you that you are beautiful just as you are,” Jesse & Joy said in the homemade video released on their Instagram page. “It’s called ‘Love’ and talks about love being the universal language, the language that all of us should speak.”

On the post’s caption, they elaborated that the song and video are in celebration of Pride Month and was a previous presentation for, LGBTI organization Yaaj Mexico.

“Do not let anyone tell you that it is wrong to love,” they stated of the uptempo acoustic song.
