Karol G Collects Eight Latin American Music Awards Trophies, Including Artist of the Year

Karol G is this year’s Latin American Music Awards darling…

The 32-year-old Colombian superstar was the big winner at the 2023 Latin AMAs, taking home eight awards, including artist of the year.

Karol GIn addition to the night’s top prize, Karol G took home Song of the Year and Collaboration of the Year for her Becky G-collaboration “MAMIII.”

Becky G collected four awards, including Best Collaboration – Pop/Urban for the

Karol G-assisted girl anthem “MAMIII.”

The Mexican-American singer took the stage to say that women are stronger united.

“This is bigger than us. This is girl power. Thank you to the fans for supporting us.”

Overall, it was a big night for Música Mexicana with artists such as Grupo Frontera and Carin Leon also taking the stage for performances. Leon took the stage three times to perform solo, alongside Frontera and then again for a special medley to honor Legacy Award recipient Pepe Aguilar.

Other special honorees were Carlos Vives — who also received the Legacy Award — and David Bisbal and Prince Royce both took the Pioneer Award.

Additional winners include Bad Bunny, who took home three trophies, and Junior H, Rosalía, Shakira, Romeo Santos and The Weeknd each with two.

Variety to Honor Raúl Alarcón with Legends and Groundbreakers Award at Miami Entertainment Town Lunch

Raúl Alarcón is being recognized for his breakthrough career…

The Latino music executive who serves as CEO and chairman of the Spanish Broadcasting System, one of the largest Spanish-language media companies in the U.S., will be honored at Variety’s second annual Miami Entertainment Town lunch, to be held on Thursday, April 13, in the Florida city.

Raúl AlarcónAlarcón willreceive the Legends and Groundbreakers Award for his role in promoting Latin music radio stations across the nation.

A legend in Miami, Alarcón has been on the forefront of promoting Latin artists, via radio play, and has been a crucial advocate for many of the biggest stars in Latin music. 

The event, in partnership with CN Bank, celebrates the growing entertainment and media industry based out of Miami and recognizes those profiled in Variety’s Miami Entertainment Impact Report.

At the celebration, Ronald Day, President of Entertainment and Content Strategy for NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, and Karen Barroeta, Executive Vice President of Production and Development Telemundo Global Studios, will participate in a keynote conversation with Rodrigo Nieto-Galvis, Entertainment Banking Team Leader at CN Bank Miami. The conversation will be centered around Telemundo’s strategy and around music and original programming based out of Miami.

This year, Variety will be adding a new award to the program with mega-music producer Timbaland.

He will receive the Pioneer Award for his work creating Beat Club and producing music with top artists in Miami.

Loud and Live’s CEO Nelson Albareda will participate in a spotlight conversation with Miami Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, about the city’s expansion into the entertainment sector.

Variety’s Chief Operating Officer, Dea Lawrence, and City National Bank’s Head of Entertainment Banking, JaHan Wang, will give opening remarks with Miami Beach Mayor, Dan Gelber.

“City National Bank congratulates Variety’s Miami Impact Report honorees, especially Raúl Alarcón and Timbaland who have transformed the Miami media market and entertainment industry at large,” said Wang. “Our bank has delivered for the entertainment industry for almost seven decades, and we are especially proud of our work to support Latin music, television and film in South Florida and beyond.”

Tessa Thompson Named Best Actress by Black Film Critics Circle

Tessa Thompson is earning praise for her latest role…

The Black Film Critics Circle has awarded the 38-year-old part-Panamanian and part-Mexican American actress its best actress prize.

Tessa Thompson, PassingThompson earned the award for her powerhouse performance in Passing. It’s her second best actress prize of the awards season so far for her work in the film. The other recognition came from the New York Film Critics, Online.

Thompson had previously won the critics’ group’s best supporting actress award in 2015 for her work in Creed.

Along with recognizing films in 13 categories, the group also gave the Pioneer Award to Zola co-writer and director Janicza Bravo.

Jesús López to Receive Desi Arnaz Pioneer Award at the La Musa Awards

Jesús López has a pioneering spirit…

The chairman and CEO of Universal Music Latin America and Iberian Peninsula will receive the Desi Arnaz PioneerAward at the seventh annual La Musa Awards from the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.

López, who is responsible for Universal Music Groupoperations in all Spanish and Portuguese-speaking territories of the world, will receive the recognition for his many contributions throughout his professional career. 

The Desi Arnaz Pioneer Award was created by the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in honor of the early television visionary, songwriter and entertainer, who developed the iconic comedy show I Love Lucy, which he produced and starred in with his wife, Lucille Ball.

For more than four decades, López has worked with some of the greatest artists in Latin music, including Juan Luis Guerra, Juanes, José Luis Perales, Joan Manuel Serrat, Mecano and Juan Gabriel. Most recently, he has launched the careers of Karol Gand Sebastian Yatra, among many of a new generation of acts. Lopez was also behind the global hits “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee and J Balvin’s “Mi Gente,” which were pivotal in the current explosion of Latin music.

Lopez’s roster of international hits also includes Los del Rio’s “Macarena,” “La Camisa Negra” by Juanes, and “Bailando” by Enrique Iglesias featuring Descemer Buenoand Gente de Zona.

Previous recipients of the award include Quincy Jones, Nat King Coleand Raul Pablo Alarcon Sr. 

The La Musa Awards ceremony will take place on October 24 at the James L. Knight Centerin Miami. This year’s class of inductees includes Ivy Queen, Willie Colón, Michael Sullivan, Chico Novarroand Armando Larrinaga.
