Peter Murrieta Adapting Jeffrey J. Mariotte’s Forthcoming Novel “Blood And Gold: The Legend of Joaquin Murrieta” as a TV/Film Project

It’s a (blood and) golden opportunity for Peter Murrieta.

The Latino two-time Emmy-winning television producer and writer is teaming up with Russell Binder’s Striker Entertainment to option and adapt Jeffrey J. Mariotte’s forthcoming novel Blood And Gold: The Legend of Joaquin Murrieta

Peter Murrieta

Set during the harsh and brutal but transformative era of the California Gold Rush, the book tells the story of real-life bandit Joaquin Murrieta, who was dubbed the ‘Robin Hood of the West’.

It follows how Murrieta, a romantic, charismatic young Mexican who, overcome by fear that his beloved Rosita will be forced into an arranged marriage, persuades her to join him as he follows his brother Jesús to the California gold fields where they encounter prejudice, hatred, and explosive violence – transforming Joaquin from an honest, hardworking miner into a bandit and the very spirit of vengeance.

The team said the book blends historical facts with untold family stories from direct descendants of Murrieta.

It will be released by Sundown Press in October this year. Peter Murrieta is also a co-author on the book.

Murrieta, who recently signed a first-look deal with Universal Television, will pen the screenplay.

“In the prefatory note to his epic Western novel Warlock, Oakley Hall wrote that ‘The pursuit of truth, not of facts, is the business of fiction,’” said Mariotte. “I have been fascinated by Joaquin Murrieta for nearly five decades, but it took connecting with Peter – who knows the real truth as much as it can be known— – o be able to tell the story the way it needed to be told.”

It’s not decided if the project will be a film or television program.

Murrieta’s credits include Netflix shows One Day At A Time and Mr. Iglesias. He was also an executive producer on Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place and the creator of Warner Bros. series Greetings From Tucson.

Longoria Expands Her Behind-the-Scenes Television Series Roster

Eva Longoria’s portfolio of behind-the-scenes television projects is expanding…

The 38-year-old Mexican American actress and former Desperate Housewives star’s production company UnbeliEVAble Entertainment has set up two more projects – a comedy at NBC and drama at Lifetime.

Eva Longoria

The NBC project stars rising comedian Erik Rivera and is based on his life and standup comedy routine.

Peter Murrieta, a comedy veteran, will write the script and executive produce the project with Scott Ellis, who is set to direct, and UnbeliEVAble’s Longoria and Ben Spector. The project stems from a deal UnbeliEVAble made with Rivera earlier this year to develop a vehicle based on his comedy.

The setup is reminiscent of ABC’s The George Lopez Show, which also started with a well-known actress, Sandra Bullock, championing a Latino comedian on the rise, Lopez, and partnering him with an established sitcom showrunner, Bruce Helford, for a comedy project starring Lopez and based on his standup. .

The Lifetime drama, titled Blackout, is a small town soap written by Elle Triedman (Revenge). It centers on a woman whose failed career leads her to return home after 10 years to the small blue collar town run by her estranged siblings. She tries to make amends with her family and her past but the murder of a teenage girl forces her to face her own demons.

Blackout expands Longoria’s relationship with Lifetime where she serves as an executive producer on the soapy drama Devious Maids.

Consuelos May Star in Comedy Pilot for ABC

Mark Consuelos may soon be moving on up to Manhattan’s Upper West Side…

ABC is thisclose to closing on a script deal for a comedy that will star the 41-year-old half-Mexican actor and former All My Children star.

Mark Consuelos

Executive produced by Consuelos and his wife, Live With Kelly & Michael host Kelly Ripa, the half-hour project will be written by Peter Murrieta.

Produced by ABC Studios, the comedy centers on a blue-collar handyman from Queens (Consuelos) who enters the wealthy world of New York City’s Upper West Side, where he and his son become part of a non-traditional family unit.

This marks the second time ABC and ABC Studios are developing a comedy starring Consuelos. Two years ago, the network bought Port Love, a workplace comedy written by Jeffrey Hodes and Nastaran Dibai.

Consuelos, who rose to acclaim as the hunky Mateo Santos on All My Children, is currently recurring on FX’s American Horror Story: Asylum.  He’s previously guest-starred on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Third Watch and Friends.

It’s a topic Murrieta first addressed in his first-ever series as a creator, the WB’s Greetings From Tucson.

Murrieta served as the showrunner on the first three seasons of Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, helping  the family comedy achieve ratings success and land the network it’s first best series Emmy Award.
