Corea Among the Top Latino 2015 Grammy Award Nominees

There’s no denying Chick Corea is a Grammy darling…

The 73-year-old part-Spanish jazz and fusion musician picked up two nods for the 2015 Grammy Awards, upping his total career nominations to a whopping 63.

Corea, a 20-time winner, is nominated in the Improvised Jazz Solo category for “Fingerprints.” He’s also up for Jazz Instrumental Album for the Chick Corea Trio  critically acclaimed Trilogy.

But Corea isn’t the only double-nominee this year…

David Arthur Garcia will actually compete against himself at next year’s Grammy Awards.

The award-winning Latino songwriter-producer, who won his first Grammy this year as a songwriter for co-writing Mandisa’s massive hit “Overcomer,” has picked up two nominations in the Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song category.

Garcia has earned recognition for co-penning Francesca Battistelli’s “Write Your Story” and Mercy Me’s “Shake.”

Roman Pichon Herrera has picked up two nominations in the same category as well.

The Latino music video producer is nominated in the Music Video category for co-producing Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” and Woodkid’s “The Golden Age” featuring Max Richter.

Meanwhile, Kirstie Maldonado has earned the first Grammy nomination of her career.

The half-Mexican American/part-Spanish artist and her fellow Pentatonix group mates – winners of NBC’s The Sing-Off in 2011 – earned the nod in the Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella
category for their acclaimed  ”Daft Punk” medley. Among their competition, Pentatonix will face off against Cuban composer and jazz pianist Alfredo Rodríguez’s “Guantanamera.”

But Maldonado isn’t the only first-time nominee…

Aloe Blacc has picked up the very first Grammy nod of his career in the R&B Album category. The

The 35-year-old Panamanian American singer-songwriter earned the nomination for his impressive album Lift Your Spirit.

Other notable Latino musicians/entertainers earning 2015 Grammy nominations include Christina Aguilera, Ruben Blades, Juanes , Marco Antonio Solís, Jorge Drexler , Ana Tijoux , Pepe Aguilar , Vicente Fernández , Ixya Herrera  , Carlos Vives, Sérgio Mendes  and Louis C.K. 

The Grammys are awarded by the Recording Academy, which is made up of 22,000 members of the music industry including musicians, producers, engineers, record company and radio industry personnel and others.

The awards are determined by the academy’s voting membership of about 13,000.

Winners will be announced on February 8 at the 2015 Grammy Awards ceremony to be held at the Staples Center and broadcast live on CBS.

Pitbull to Perform at the Latin Grammys with Carlos Santana

Pitbull is set to join forces with a music legend at this year’s Latin Grammys…

The 33-year-old Cuban American singer and Carlos Santana will perform live onstage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas during the annual awards broadcast.

No word yet on what song(s) Pitbull and the 67-year-old Mexican musician, considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, will perform.

In addition to his performance with Santana, Mr. Worldwide will also take the stage with Wisin and Chris Brown.

Other pairings for this year’s Latin Grammys include Magic! with Marc Anthony, and Regional Mexican star Pepe Aguilar and Spanish pop icon Miguel Bose.

Also set to perform together are: Pablo Alborán with Jesse & Joy, Marc Anthony in anther performance, this time with Carlos Vives; Rubén Blades with Carlos Franzetti, Camila with Ricky Martin, La Arrolladora Banda El Limón De René Camacho with Espinoza Paz, La Original Banda El Limón De Salvador Lizárraga with Río Roma, Carlos Vives with ChocQuibTown, and Yandel with General Gadiel and Farruko. A Best New Artist nominees medley will feature Aneeka, Pablo López and Mariana Vega.

The show will also feature performances by leading nominees Calle 13, Juanes, J Balvin, Person of the Year Joan Manuel Serrat and other stars.

Meanwhile, Enrique Iglesias, Descemer Bueno and Gente De Zona will perform their massive hit song “Bailando” live from Europe, where they are currently on tour.

A total of twenty performances are scheduled for the fifteenth Latin Grammy Awards, which will be broadcast live on Univision on November 20 at 8:00 pm ET.

Confirmed to present awards are current nominees Jorge Drexler and Prince Royce; as well as actor Daniel Arenas, actress Eiza Gonzalez, Latin Grammy winner Natalia Jiménez, singer/songwriter Joaquin Sabina, and actress Roselyn Sanchez.

Aguilar to be Honored at the Hispanic Heritage Awards

Pepe Aguilar is preparing to celebrate an extra special Hispanic Heritage Month…

The 46-year-old Mexican American singer-songwriter is among the Latino luminaries being feted at this year’s Hispanic Heritage Awards on September 18.

The Hispanic Heritage Foundation has announced that Aguilar, among others, will be honored at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., with PBS airing the awards show as a one-hour special on September 29.

Aguilar, a four-time Grammy winner and four-time Latin Grammy winner, will receive the Master of Arts award in recognition of his thriving career in the music industry.

In addition to Aguilar, the 2014 honorees include the Hayden High School Robotics Team (Education), Bernie Williams (Sports), Carlos Vives (Legend), Henry R. Munoz III (Leadership), Zoe Saldana (Vision), Rep. Ruben Hinojosa (Science Technology Engineering Math) and a special recognition for the 65th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army, “The Borinqueneers.”

“The Hispanic Heritage Foundation is proud to honor yet another inspiring group of Latino leaders,” said Jose Antonio Tijerino, president and CEO of the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. “The Hispanic community has made significant contributions throughout history, and we are proud to recognize that impact. Beyond celebrating our past success, we are focused on the future. Now more than ever, Latinos will play a vital role in moving America forward.”

The Hispanic Heritage Awards were launched in 1987 by the White House as a way to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S.

The awards receive support from about 40 national institutions who co-host the program.

Aguilar to Headline TR3s’ Next “MTV Unplugged” Special

Pepe Aguilar is about to get unplugged…

The 45-year-old Mexican American ranchera and mariachi singer-songwriter has been chosen to be part of TR3s’ (formerly known as MTV TR3s) next MTV Unplugged special.

Aguilar, known for his velvety voice and refined arrangements, has long alternated between pop and ranchero. But he’s best known for the latter, especially since he’s almost always wearing a charro outfit.

Aguilar also has rocker roots though, and has long talked about delving in that genre. His MTV Unplugged special could be the perfect opportunity.

“I normally fuse Mexican music with other rhythms and concepts,” Aguilar told Billboard in an exclusive interview. “Here it’s going to be the other way round. I’m going to have a traditional musical foundation—drums, bass, guitars, piano, organ—and we will incorporate mariachi to that.”

But it won’t only be mariachi. Although Aguilar and TR3s are still fine-tuning the production details, Aguilar’s MTV Unplugged special will be a fusion of sounds, produced by Emmanuel “Meme” del Real, one of the founding members of Mexican alt band Café Tacuba (and co-producer of Juanes’ latest album). This will mark the first time Aguilar is produced by someone other than himself, much less a rocker.

“Meme comes from a completely different background than mine, so joining these two experiences will be very interesting,” says Aguilar, who plans on covering several of his big hits.

Aguilar’s MTV Unplugged album is slated for release later this year.

TR3s’ last MTV Unplugged was Juanes’ 2012 MTV Unplugged, which earned album of the year honors at the 2012 Latin Grammys Awards.

Jesse & Joy Win Big at the Latin Grammys…

There’s plenty of joy in Jesse & Joy’s world this week…

The Mexican pop/rock duo proved to be the ultimate victor at Thursday night’s Latin Grammy Awards show.

The 29-year-old Jesse Huerta and his 26-year-old hermanita Joy Huerta picked up four awards during the show, including best record, song and contemporary pop vocal album.

“Thanks to the best fans in the world,” said Jesse, who with his sister picked up the Best New Artist award at the 2007 Latin Grammys. “It feels incredible. We’ve not been at the Latin Grammys since 2007, so this feels like a great comeback.”

Jesse & Joy, who recently released the music video for the duo’s latest single “¿Con Quién Se Queda El Perro?”, also won the award for best short form music video for their single “Me Voy.”

Meanwhile, Colombian pop-rock singer Juanes, who will launch a tour next May, took home two awards for his MTV Unplugged set, including album of the year and best short form music video. When asked if he gets nervous before an awards show, he said that he definitely thinks about the entire process.

“I don’t suffer,” said Juanes. “You think maybe it’s there, maybe it’s not. These wins are much more than I imaged.”

Cuban jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer Arturo Sandoval won two trophies for best Latin jazz album (“Dear Diz – Every Day I Think of You“) and best tango album (“Tango – Como Yo Te Siento“).

“I’d like to dedicate this award to my father who turned me on to the tango,” said Sandoval as he received his award. “He was a mechanic, but when he spoke about the tango he knew all of the melodies.”

Mexico’s Carla Morrison, one of the year’s most celebrated indie pop acts, took the prize for best alternative song for her emotionally-driven “Déjenme Llorar,” a song about breaking up, which has helped the singer/songwriter become a YouTube sensation. Later she also won for best alternative music album.

“This is also for all the kids who have broken hearts,” Morrison said.

Mexico’s DJ collective 3BallMTY won the best new artist trophy in an acceptance speech that left the teen act in tears.

“We’re very happy and we really wanted this,” said a tearful Albert Presenda, aka DJ Otto. “We especially want to thank our families who have put up with so much of our traveling.”

Other winners included Pepe Aguilar for best ranchero album, Milly Quezada for best contemporary tropical album for “Aqui Estoy Yo,” Fonseca‘s Ilusion+ for best tropical fusion album — beating out Prince Royce — and Tucanes de Tijuana‘s 365 Dias for best norteño album.

Hosted by actress/singer Lucero and actor Cristian de la Fuente, the first round of awards included a prize for Spanish pop singer David Bisbal, who won for best pop traditional vocal album.

Earlier in the day during the Latin Grammy pre-telecast, more than 30 awards were given in a ceremony at the House of Blues at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, including producer of the year to Juan Luis Guerra.

3BallMTY: This Year’s Billboard Mexican Music Awards MVP

The members of 3BallMTY proved to be the beaus of the ball at this year’s Billboard Mexican Music Awards.

The Mexican tribal music troupe – comprised of Erick Rincon, Sergio Zavala (Dj Sheeqo Beat) and Alberto Presenda (Dj Otto) – earned the most awards of any artist/act during Thursday night’s nationally televised awards show, which honors regional Mexican music.

This year’s 12-time nominee 3BallMTY picked up nine awards, including New Artist of the Year, Artist of the Year, Duo or Group; Song Artist of the Year and Digital Download Artist of the Year.

The awards show was broadcast live on Telemundo from Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and featured genre-breaking performances from 3BallMTY together with reggaetón duo J King & Maximán, as well as more traditional fare from Conjunto Primavera and Los Huracanes del Norte.

3BallMTY’s wins helped to shine a spotlight on the dynamic nature of regional Mexican music, the top-selling Latin sub-genre in the United States. The trio of DJs, who only released their debut album last year – and who had their network performance premiere on the first Billboard Mexican Music Awards – also won Songs Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for the single “Inténtalo,” featuring El Bebeto and América Sierra.

“In Mexico there have always been new waves,” said 3Ball MTY’s Zavala on the red carpet outside of Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. “We brought something fresh with the electronic sound [and] tribal is really growing.”

Meanwhile, last year’s big winner, norteño star Gerardo Ortiz, picked up seven awards, including Artist of the Year and Artist of the Year, Male. Ortiz’s album Entre Dios y el Diablo also won the Album of the Year Award.

A special award for the evening was given to ranchera singer/songwriter Pepe Aguilar, who received Billboard‘s Legacy Award in recognition of his lengthy and rich musical trajectory that has influenced the genre and its artists.

Legendary ranchera singer Vicente Fernández, currently on a farewell tour, swept the ranchero/mariachi category, winning Ranchero/Mariachi Album of the Year for Otra Vez, Song of the Year with “El Vestido Blanco” and overall Ranchero/Mariachi Artist of the Year.

Jenni Rivera won Artist of the Year, Female and Banda Album of the Year for her album Joyas Prestadas.

3Ball MTY to Perform at the Billboard Mexican Music Awards

It looks like the members of 3Ball MTY will be having the night of their lives at this year’s Billboard Mexican Music Awards.

The three young Mexican deejays – Erick Rincon, Sergio Zavala (Dj Sheeqo Beat) and Alberto Presenda (Dj Otto) – not only lead the finalists for this year’s awards with 12 nods, but they’ve just been confirmed as performers for the big show.

Regional Mexican stars Pepe Aguilar, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Ana Barbara, Julion Alvarez y su Norteño Banda and America Sierra, best known as the featured vocalist on 3BallMTY’s single “Inténtalo“, will also perform at the awards show, which will be broadcast live from Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on Telemundo on October 18.

3BallMTY, who had their national television debut at last year’s Mexican Music Awards, broke ground with “Inténtalo,” a finalist in the Song of the Year, Song of the Year-Vocal Event and Duranguense/Grupero/Cumbia Song of the Year categories.

Aguilar Receives Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Pepe Aguilar has officially left his mark in Hollywood…

The 42-year-old Mexican American ranchera and mariachi singer, who will be touring with Shaila Durcal and Joan Sebastian this fall, received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame on Thursday.

“It’s an honor for me. I feel honored to be here on this very beautiful occasion. But, above all, it’s an honor for the music I represent,” said Aguilar, who was accompanied by relatives, friends and fans.

Dressed in a dark suit and sunglasses, Aguilar unveiled his star, which was No. 2,474 among those bestowed upon celebrities from film, television, radio and music by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

Aguilera’s star is located at 7060 Hollywood Boulevard. It’s placed next to the star of another ranchera music legend, Pepe’s father Antonio Aguilar.

“A man who came from Zacatecas before having that star (and) slept on the streets of Los Angeles like one more undocumented (immigrant),” said the singer regarding his father.

Aguilar, who has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards, was the first singer of Mexican descent to sing at the legendary Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. And, he was the first Latino to sing at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles. He has sold millions of albums worldwide.

Durcal to Tour with Joan Sebastian and Pepe Aguilar

Shaila Durcal is getting ready to leave a special footprint on her fans…

The 32-year-old Spanish singer-songwriter will be co-headlining a tour with Mexican stars Joan Sebastian and Pepe Aguilar.

Entitled Dejando Huella…Una Historia Musical, the 16-date tour will kick off in Kansas City this September.

The tour was originally slated to begin June 22 in Washington DC, but the first eight tour dates were postponed. Dejando Huella may have been affected by an overcrowded Latin tour schedule that included a triple-threat tour featuring Chayanne, Marc Anthony and Marco Antonio Solís; the Jennifer López, Enrique Iglesias and Frankie J. tour; and Vicente Fernández‘s farewell tour.

Dejando Huella stood out from others because it included Latin equestrian shows that have traditionally been part of Aguilar and Sebastian’s sets, as well as jaripeo performances that are considered a form of bull riding practiced in Mexico.

Fergie Takes Home Two Grammy Awards

She’d previously won six Grammys with the Black Eyed Peas… But its Fergie’s recent project without the group that has resulted in more gramophones in her collection.

The 36-year-old part-Mexican singer took home two awards at the 54th Grammy Awards on Sunday for her work on Kanye West’s “All of the Lights.”

The track from West’s album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy—featuring Fergie, Rihanna and Kid Cudi—won in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song categories.

But Fergie wasn’t the only two-time winner… Jazz musician Chick Corea also picked up a pair of gramophones at this year’s Grammys.

The 70-year-old part-Spanish jazz pianist, keyboardist and composer won in the Best Improvised Jazz Solo category for the song “500 Miles High,” as well as in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album for the album Forever.

In all, Correa has won a total of 18 Grammy Awards during his illustrious career.

Meanwhile, Louis C.K. earned his first Grammy, further cementing his status as the world’s biggest comedy star.

The 44-year-old part-Mexican American comedian won in the Best Comedy Album category for “Hilarious,” beating out the Weird Al Yankovic, Patton Oswalt, Kathy Griffin and Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island for the award.
