“Blancanieves” Earns 18 Goya Award Nominations

Pablo Berger‘s silent black-and-white reinterpretation of the Snow White fable, Blancanieves, is this awards season’s Goya darling.

The 49-year-old Spanish director’s film, hailed as an homage to 1920s European silent films, leads the pack with 18 nominations for the Spanish Film Academy‘s Goya Awards, Spain’s equivalent to the Oscars.

Blancanieves

Blancanieves, which recently debuted in the U.S. at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, received nominations in the best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best editing, best original music and best original song categories.

In addition, six of the films stars earned nods, including Maribel Verdú in the Best Actress category, Daniel Giménez Cacho in the Best Actor field and Macarena García in the Best Actress Revelation category.

“We are very, very happy. We ran for 18 possible nominations and we got 18,” said Blancanieves producer Ibon Cormenzana. “We’ve sold to many territories and in two weeks we’ll release in theaters in France. I think we’ve benefited from the success of the The Artist.”

Meanwhile, Alberto Rodriguez’s Unit 7 earned 16 nominations, Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Impossible received 14 nods and Fernando Trueba’s The Artist and The Model picked up 13 nominations.

The Impossible’s Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor will compete for lead actress and supporting actor thanks to a change in the Spanish Academy’s rules that allows non-Spanish speaking actors who participate in Spanish productions to compete for acting honors. That translates to Watts vying for the lead acting nod against Verdu’s evil step-mother from Blancanieves, Penelope Cruz from Volver a nacer and Aida Folch‘s muse-like performance in The Artist and the Model.

Blancanieves’ Cacho, Model’s Jean Rochefort, Unit’s Antonio de la Torre and veteran actor Jose Sacristan from The Dead Man and Being Happy will compete for the lead actor statue.

In Spain, Bayona’s film has broken box office records, where it is just about to hit the 42 million euro mark at the box office.

“Our objective is to sell more than 6 million tickets,” said Impossible producer Ghislain Barrois.

The Spanish academy will dole out the awards on February 17 at a gala ceremony in Madrid.

The Steamy Music Video for Cruz & Miguel Bosé’s Duet Released

She’s already earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in the film adaptation of the musical Nine… And Penélope Cruz could soon earn a Grammy nomination.

The 38-year-old Spanish actress – who made her singing debut in Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver, in a role that earned her another Oscar nomination – appears in a new music video for her critically acclaimed duet with her Spanish compatriot Miguel Bosé.

Penelope Cruz & Miguel Bose

In the black-and-white clip, Cruz – looking quite sensual – and Bosé appear in different hotel rooms, where the actress boasts her sweet voice and throws herself onto the bed dressed in sexy lingerie, while singing “Decirnos Adiós,” a song composed by her brother Eduardo Cruz.

“Penelope sings fabulously and, above all, she has a lot of personality in her voice and enjoys it a lot, something that you can’t say about everyone,” Bosé told Spanish wire service EFE.

Cruz was one of the special guests on Bosé’s most recent album Papitwo, along with the voices of Joaquín Sabina, Juan Luis Guerra, Tiziano Ferro, Dani Martin and Pablo Alborán, who also collaborated on the production.

The album was released in August 2012.

Bündchen Named One of the Hottest Women of 2013

She may have just given birth to her second child last month, but Gisele Bündchen is still being hailed as one of the hottest women of 2013…

Men’s Health has named the 32-year-old Brazilian supermodel as of the hottest women of the year. Bündchen, who comes in at No. 9, is the only Latina to make the Top 10.

Gisele Bundchen

“She’s like a fashion model blitzkrieg; unstoppable, and easily destroying the competition. She’s been so busy that she purportedly turned down 20 million dollars to be the spokeswoman for Clonaid, the human cloning company. Which, on the one hand, was probably a smart business decision,” says the magazine “(The Guinness Book of Records credits her as ‘the world’s richest supermodel,’  so she doesn’t need the money.) But still, can you imagine if Clonaid was able to use their cloning technology to build an army of Bündchens? There could be a Bündchen in every home! Okay, probably not realistic, but we can dream, can’t we?”

Other Latinas who’ve made the list include Jessica Alba, Adriana Lima and Sofia Vergara. Katy Perry topped the list, beating out Esquire‘s Sexiest Woman Alive Mila Kunis, AskMen‘s Most Desirable Woman Jennifer Lawrence, and Maxim‘s hottest woman Bar Refaeli.

Here’s a look at the Latinas on Men’s Health’s “The Hottest Women of 2013” list:

Almodóvar Shares “I’m So Excited” Trailer at London Tribute

Pedro Almodóvar is being heralded for his “heart as big as the Grand Canyon”…

The 63-year-old Spanish filmmaker was honored at an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences retrospective of Almodóvar’s work in London, which was attended by celebrities like Grace Jones, Kristen Scott Thomas and Miranda Richardson.

Pedro Almodovar

During the high-profile event, Almodóvar brother Agustin, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Stephen Frears and Sally Potter were among the people offering their tributes to the Oscar-winning filmmaker.

Quentin Tarantino even participated in special pre-recorded video to thank  Almodóvar  for having a “a filmography to beat.” Meanwhile, Frears enthused about Almodóvar’s ability to make everything seem natural.

“He creates a coherent world in which all of the elements fit,” he said. “It comes out of his imagination complete. I met him in New York when I was with My Beautiful Laundrette. I felt like an impostor; here was the transgressive real thing. Mine was a charade.”

A humbled Almodóvar admitted to being embarrassed by all the kind words.

“Tonight I know more about myself than ever,” he joked. “I’ve always strived to try and make life more livable with my films. It’s the homework of any kind of artistic expression. That was the lesson I learned from my mother.”

He even revealed that he’d tried and failed to nab the rights to books like The Hours, Silence of the Lambs, The Human Stain and The Reader, any of which would have been his first foray into English-language film. It’s a bridge he says he’ll likely not attempt to cross again.

“But you have to respect destiny. Perhaps I was not the one to make the movies that I now admire so much.”

And as a delight to the audience, Almodóvar shared a clip from his new film I’m So Excited, which Sony Pictures Classics will release next year. The film, which was originally titled Los Amantes Pasajeros, is the famed director’s return to comedy after a number of dramas like The Skin I Live In and Habla con ella.

The film’s all-star cast includes Javier Cámara, Cecilia Roth, Lola Dueñas, Raul Arévalo, Carlos Areces, Antonio de la Torre, Hugo Silva, Willy Toledo, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Blanca Suárez, José Luis Torrijo, José María Yazpik and Laya Martí, with special collaborations from Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas and Paz Vega.

Cruz In Negotiations to Star in “Gucci”

She’s donned Gucci on the red carpet, but Penelope Cruz may soon be appearing on the big screen in a film about the Italian family behind the legendary clothing brand.

The 38-year-old Spanish actress and 2013’s Campari calender girl is currently in talks to star in Gucci, according to The Wrap.

Penelope Cruz

Directed by Ridley Scott’s daughter Jordan Scott, the film tells the story of the late Maurizio Gucci, grandson of Gucci’s founder, as he becomes heir to the family empire.

Gucci was shot to death in 1995. His ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani, was jailed for the killing in 1999.

The project, first announced in 2006, originally had Ridley Scott attached to direct from a script by Andrea Berloff. Several other writers have since been involved in the project.

Angelina Jolie was approached in 2009 to play Reggiani, who was jailed for 29 years for allegedly ordering the killing of her ex-husband, when Ridley was still attached to direct.

Reports of the film’s resurfacing came as Gucci makes a push to re-establish the brand as synonymous with Hollywood glamour, which it has been struggling to do since Tom Ford left the house in 2004.

The company has become increasingly involved in the film world. Gucci has given more than $2 million to Martin Scorsese to help him restore old films, including Federico Fellini‘s La Dolce Vita and Sergio Leone‘s Once Upon a Time in America.

The label also funds film scholarships and supports a weekly film series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Entertainment One Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Twice Born, which stars the 38-year-old Spanish actress as an infertile woman.

Directed by Sergio Castellitto and starring Cruz and Emile Hirsch, the epic, operatic film centers on a single mother who brings her teenage son to Sarajevo, where his father died in the Bosnian conflict years before.

Twice Born

“I think this movie is [a] homage to all women, a homage to motherhood,” said Cruz in a recent interview. “It’s a homage to that relationship of mother and child.”

Cruz plays Gemma, an Italian women who returns to Sarajevo in the present day with her 16-year-old son, Pietro. They’re in town so she can tell him more about his father, a dead American photographer named Diego (Hirsch), with whom she lived in the city years before. Through flashbacks, the viewer soon realizes Gemma isn’t actually Pietro’s mother.

“A woman that doesn’t want children obviously can be happy without children. But one that wants to have children that much … it’s very difficult for her to be happy. Of course I understood all that before I became a mother,” continues Cruz in her interview. “But after you give birth you understand in a much deeper way what Gemma was missing.”

The plan is to release Twice Born, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, in the United States and Canada next year.
