Lupita Infante Signs First Major Label Record Deal with Sony Music Latin

Lupita Infante is officially a big deal

Sony Music Latin has signed the Mexican American mariachi, norteño, and ranchera singer to her first record deal with a major label.

Lupita InfanteBefore signing with Sony, Infante had been releasing music as an indie artist, including her 2019 Grammy-nominated debut album La Serenata.

“I am thrilled to sign with Sony Music, a team that is undoubtedly one of the best in the world. To be on a label with such a deep legacy and to be a part of a roster with such remarkable talent is a dream come true,” Infante told Billboard. “Being an independent artist was very important for me, it gave me the opportunity to grow in so many ways. Now I want to take my work to the next level! The people at Sony Music understand me and my artistry, and together we want to make history in the Mexican music scene!”

Sony Music Latin president Alex Gallardo added, “Mexican-music fans are eager to hear more women’s voices. Lupita Infante has the preparation, the voice, the songwriting skill and the credibility to lead a revolution in the industry, which is long overdue.”

A graduate of UCLA, where she completed a degree in ethnomusicology, the mariachi and norteña singer is the granddaughter of renowned and iconic ranchera singer Pedro Infante.

Her 2019 Grammy nod was followed by a nomination at the 2020 Latin Grammys where her song “Dejaré” was up for best regional Mexican song.

Most recently, Infante was part of Billboard‘s 2021 Latin Music Week where she was joined by Ana Bárbara, Adriana Rios and Ivonne Galaz in BMI’s “How I Wrote That Song” panel.

There, she spoke about representing a new generation of female artists in the male-dominated genre that is regional Mexican, and she also spoke on inspiration and embracing the duality of her identity.

“I’m bicultural, Mexican-American, but I feel more Mexican and people criticize me saying, ‘You’re not Mexican.’ But when you grow up knowing that your grandfather is Pedro Infante, finding your identity isn’t easy,” she passionately said during the conversation in Miami. “I just remember wanting to have that ranchero style that represented our genre. And because I’m in mariachi, there are so many rules with our outfits.”

The announcement of her new deal coincides with the upcoming release of her first single under Sony titled “Hazme Tuya.” The track is out Friday, April 1.

Maluma & Carlos Rivera Pair Up for the Mariachi Ballad “100 Años”

Maluma is switchin’ genres…

The 26-year-old Colombian singer has joined voices with Carlos Rivera for a stripped-down mariachi ballad titled “100 Años,” produced by Edgar Barrera.

Carlos Rivera & Maluma

Maluma and the Mexican singer-songwriter’s unprecedented and emotional collaboration promises to be the next breakup anthem.

While it may bear a similar title to Mexican icon Pedro Infante’s “100 Años, ” Maluma and Rivera’s collaboration is a completely new song that they wrote with hitmaker Barrera and Vicente Barco.

“This song is an encounter between two friends who called a mariachi, and after a pair of tequila shots wanted to sing ranchera music, ” Rivera said in a statement.

“100 Años” may appear to be Maluma’s first stab at regional Mexican music, but he took on the genre in 2014 on “La Invitación” with his compatriot Pipe Bueno.

While “La Invitación” was a fusion of regional Mexican music and reggaeton, Maluma goes full mariachi singer on his take on “100 Años” and digs deep to capture the emotion of their heartfelt lyrics.

Trailer Released for Omar Chaparro’s Pedro Infante-Themed “Como Caído del Cielo”

Omar Chaparro is portraying a Mexican icon…

The 45-year-old Mexican actor/comedian is starring as Mexican singing star and movie idol Pedro Infante in Netflix’s Como Caído del Cielo.

Omar Chaparro

In the new film, which is being called a “comedic telenovela with a magic realist twist,” Infante takes over the body of one of his modern-day impersonators.

In a plot that recalls Heaven Can Wait, the 1978 hit film starring Warren BeattyComo Caído del Cieloopens with Infante stuck in purgatory: although his voice and image were beloved by fans in Mexico and around the world, and remain so to this day, in the movie his deplorable machista behavior on earth has kept him from going to heaven. But when a Pedro Infante imitator named Pedro Guadalupe Ramos dies, the real Infante has a chance to come back to life in his body, and try and earn a place among the angels by showing respect for women, particularly Ramos’ wife. Not surprisingly, Ramos himself had been unfaithful.

Love songs sung by Infante-Ramos (Chaparro) throughout the movie are the key to romance, and a final resting place for Infante’s soul.

A soundtrack, with Chaparro singing Infante classics and “De Que Me Sirve El Cielo,” an original composition that’s the movie’s theme song, will be released at the same time on JN Records

The album was produced by Jorge Avendaño, who also co-wrote that song, and is known for writing themes for telenovelas and working with artists including Ricardo Montaner and Mexican singer and actress Edith Marquez.

Chaparro, best known as a comedic actor, has recorded two previous albums.

The film, the first original production from Netflix Latin America, debuts on Christmas Eve.

This record is dedicated to the outstanding composers who, generation after generation, filled our lives with love, nostalgia, memories and moments. After all these years, they remain alive in our souls.”
