Adriana Barraza to Star in the Feature Film “Monica”

Adriana Barraza has landed her next role…

The 64-year-old Oscar-nominated actress will star opposite Trace Lysette, Patricia Clarkson and Anna Paquin in the feature film Monica, from Italian filmmaker Andrea Pallaoro.

The drama will chart the story of a transgender woman (Lysette) who returns home to the Midwest to care for her dying mother (Clarkson).

The tale of a fractured family is said to explore themes of abandonment, ageing, acceptance and redemption.

From an original screenplay by the director and Orlando Tirado, the film is scheduled to begin production at the end of the year.

Barraza earned an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Babel. She most recently appeared in Rambo: Last Blood, and starred in the series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

Gloria & Emilio Estefan to Appear at This Year’s Tony Awards

Emilio and Gloria Estefan may be bringing their life story to The Great White Way in the near future… But first they’ll be appearing as part of Broadway’s biggest night.

In addition to the multi-Grammy winning musicians and producers, the upcoming ceremony, honoring the best of Broadway will also feature appearances by Bradley Cooper, Kevin Bacon, Carole King, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Will Ferrell, Liev Schreiber, Emmy Rossum, Kate Mara, Zachary Quinto, Zachary Levi, Lucy Liu, Clint Eastwood, Patricia Clarkson, Leighton Meester, Ethan Hawke, Zach Braff, Matt Bomer, Anna Gunn, Tony nominee Audra McDonald, Fran Drescher, Wayne Brady, Kenneth Branagh, Tony Goldwyn, Vera Farmiga and Alessandro Nivola, it was announced Tuesday.

Hugh Jackman will hosted this year’s show.

The 68th annual Tony Awards, presented by The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will broadcast live from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on June 8 on CBS.

Escalante Named to This Year’s Marrakech Film Festival Jury

It’s jury time for Amat Escalante…

The 34-year-old Mexican filmmaker will join Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson and president Martin Scorsese on this year’s jury for the 13th annual Marrakech Film Festival.

Academy Awards aside, the jury is stacked with Cannes Film Festival winners and regulars.

Escalante, this year’s best director winner, was named Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival.

South Korean director Park Chan-wook (Stoker, Oldboy), Turkish director Fatih Akin (New York, I Love You) and Moroccan writer-director Narjiss Nejjar, who took home the best screenplay award at Marrakech in 2003 for Les Yeux Secs, will round out the star-studded jury.

The jury votes on the festival’s top prize, the Golden Star, for best film, as well as the jury prize, best actor and best actress. The festival’s slate of 15 films is expected to be announced next week. The festival will pay tribute to Scandinavian cinema in an evening program Dec. 4.

The festival runs Nov. 29-Dec. 7.

Coixet Reuniting with Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson for “Learning to Drive”

Isabel Coixet must’ve really liked working with Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson…

The 53-year-old Spanish filmmaker is reunting with Kingley and Clarkson on Learning to Drive, which is currently shooting in New York.

Coixet previously worked with the actors previously on the film Elegy.

Learning to Drive is based on a Katha Pollitt essay first published in The New Yorker in 2002.

The film also stars Jake Weber, Grace Gummer and Sarita Choudhury.

Clarkson will portray a Manhattanite who takes driving lessons from a Sikh instructor (Kingsley) who is living in Queens under political asylum.

Coixet’s other directing credits include a segment in Paris, je t’aime, My Life Without Me and The Secret Life of Words.
