Raúl Castillo to Star in Paramount‘s “Smile” Sequel

Raúl Castillo has a new reason to smile

The 46-year-old Mexican American actor has been cast in Paramount‘s Smile sequel.

Raul CastilloCastillo is among a list of new cast additions that includes Miles Gutierrez-Riley, who starred in The Wilds.

The film’s plot and character details are being kept under wraps.

The duo joins the previously announced cast: Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage, Kyle Gallner, Rosemarie DeWitt and Dylan Gelula.

Smile writer and director returns for the second installment to again direct from his own script, with Temple Hill producing.

Smile 2 is currently slated for release on October 18, 2024, when it will go up against a still-unnamed title from Universal Pictures.

Going on to gross over $217M in theaters, even if it was initially set up for release on Paramount+, Smile was one of the great, unexpected box office successes of 2022. One of several original studio horror films of late to expand into a franchise, it tells the story of Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon), a psychiatrist who becomes increasingly convinced she is being threatened by an uncanny entity, after witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient.

Castillo most recently starred in the Amazon film Cassandro opposite Gael Garia Bernal. He’s set to appear in HBO‘s Mark Ruffalo-led series, the Untitled Brad Ingelsby Task Force Project (w/t), currently in pre-production.

Prior television credits also include HBO’s Looking, Starz’s Vida and Netflix’s Atypical to name a few; Army of the DeadCha Cha Real SmoothKnives Out and We The Animals are among his film credits.

Gutierrez-Riley made his TV debut in the second season of Prime Video’s The Wilds, where he portrayed Ivan. In September 2022, Miles he starred in Paramount’s film adaptation of On The Come Up, which made its world premiere on the opening night of TIFF. Next up, he will star opposite Corey Fogelman in Tommy Dorfman’s directorial debut I Wish You All the Best, premiering at SXSW in March. It has also been announced that Gutierrez-Riley will star in Disney+’s WandaVision spinoff, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

Nickelodeon Releases New Trailer for “The Thundermans Return” TV Movie Starring Rosa Blasi

The official trailer has been released for The Thundermans Returnthe feature-length movie continuation of Nickelodeon‘s hit live-action superhero comedy series starring the 51-year-old part-Puerto Rican actress, author, model and therapist and rest of the original series cast.

Starring Kira Kosarin and Jack Griffo, reprising their roles as twins Phoebe and Max, the story follows the duo who are enjoying their superhero lifestyle in a new city. But when one ‘save’ goes awry, the Thundermans are sent back to Hiddenville, according to the film’s description.

“While Hank (Chris Tallman) and Barb (Blasi) enjoy their return, Chloe (Maya Le Clark) develops a new friend group, and Billy (Diego Velazquez) and Nora (Addison Riecke) begin a normal high school life, Max and Phoebe are determined to regain their superhero status,” the description continues.

The Thundermans Return will be available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S., Canada, Australia, the UK, Latin America and Italy on Thursday, March 7, and premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. the same evening at 7:00 pm (ET/PT) and in multiple global markets, including the UK, Italy and Latin America.

The film will also premiere in additional Nickelodeon and P+ International markets later this month.

The Thundermans Return is executive produced by Jed Spingarn and directed by Trevor Kirschner. Stars Kosarin and Griffo are executive producing.

The teleplay is by Spingarn, with a story by Spingarn, Sean W. Cunningham and Marc Dworkin, based on characters created by Spingarn. Production of the movie for Nickelodeon Studios is overseen by Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. Brian Banks serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production.

The Thundermans premiered on Nickelodeon in October 2013 and wrapped its four-season run in 2018, ranking as the number-one series across all TV among Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11. Created and executive produced by three-time Emmy Award-winner Jed Spingarn, the scripted half-hour series follows superhero twins with opposite personalities, Phoebe and Max Thunderman, as they navigate their way through school, friends and a family of extraordinary superheroes, all while keeping their true identities a secret.

The show has recently seen a resurgence following its 4Q21 launch on streaming, where it quickly became the top title across all SVOD for the quarter among Kids 6-11; and it continued to rank among the top titles with Kids 6-11 through 2022. The entire series is currently available to stream on Paramount+.

Humberly Gonzalez to Star Opposite Michelle Yeoh in Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Section 31”

The Venezuelan actress has been cast in Paramount+’s upcoming original Star Trek: Section 31, which stars Michelle Yeoh.

Yeoh reprises her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a character she first played in Star Trek: Discovery‘s first season, who joins a secret division of Starfleet. Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, she also must face the sins of her past.

“And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on Star Trek: Section 31,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the ‘Trek’ universe.”

Paulina Chávez to Star in Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ Drama Series “Landman”

The Latina actress has been cast in Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming Paramount+ drama series Landman.

Paulina ChávezChavez, who rose to acclaim on the Netflix series The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia is among a list of new series regular cast additions that includes Kayla Wallace, James Jordan and Mark Collie.

They join previously announced leads Billy Bob Thornton, Michelle Randolph and Jacob Lofland.

Co-created by Sheridan and Wallace, Landman is set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas and is a modern day tale of fortune seeking in the world of oil rigs. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.

Thornton stars as Tommy Norris, a crisis manager for an oil company. Randolph plays Ainsley Norris, the wild and strong-willed seventeen year old daughter of Tommy Norris (Thornton). Lofland portrays Cooper Norris, Tommy Norris’ (Thornton) son.

Chávez plays Ariana, a young mother whose family has suffered a misfortune.

Land Man is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions.

The nominations for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards have been revealed, with the 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor and social justice activist earning his first-ever Golden Globe nod.

The film is based on the true story of Bayard Rustin, advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., who dedicated his life to the quest for racial equality, human rights and worldwide democracy. However, as an openly gay Black man, he was all but erased from the civil rights movement he helped build.

J.A. Bayona is also a first time Golden Globes nominee…

The 48-year-old Spanish film director is nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language for directing and writing the Spanish-language survival thriller film La sociedad de la nieve (Society of Snow), an adaptation of Pablo Vierci‘s book of the same name about the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster.

Society of Snow has earned 13 Goya Awards nominations, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Bayona.

Pedro Pascal has also earned a first Golden Globes nod.

The 48-year-old Chilean actor is nominated in the Best Performance By A Male Actor In A Television Series – Drama category for his acclaimed performance in HBO’s The Last of Us.

He’s currently nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and Critics’ Choice Award for his work in The Last of Us. He has already claimed two MTV Movie & TV Awards (for Best Hero and Best Duo) for his performance in the hit TV series.

Selena Gomez has earned her second consecutive Golden Globe nomination in the Best Performance By A Female Actor In A Television Series – Musical Or Comedy category.

The 31-year-old Mexican American actress/singer earned the nod for her performance in Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building.

The 2024 Golden Globe Awards ceremony will take place January 7, 2024 at the Beverly Hilton and air live on CBS and Paramount+, after the network acquired rights following longtime home NBC not renewing its deal.

Last year, the Globes Globes returned to broadcast television after a forced hiatus due to issues around membership that eventually led to the wind-down of organizer the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Globes are now owned by longtime Globes producer Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge.

Among the changes, in addition to growing and diversifying its voter base, the Globes added new categories this year: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television.

Paramount+ has released a preview of the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery, starring the 49-year-old Puerto Rican actor.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere in April 2024 on the streamer.

In the new footage, Capt. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala) contend with a massive, hostile alien creature that has the ability to cloak itself.

Per the official logline, Season 5 “will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.”

In addition to Martin-Green, Ajala and Cruz, who portrays Dr. Hugh Culber, Star Trek: Discovery also stars Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Blu del Barrio (Adira) and Callum Keith Rennie (Rayner). Season 5 also features recurring guest stars’ Elias Toufexis (L’ak) and Eve Harlow (Moll).

The series is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Nickelodeon has released the first teaser trailer for The Thundermans Return, starring the 50-year-old part-Puerto Rican actress, author, model, and therapist.

“A super new movie brings the return of one super superhero family,” the narrator says.

The Thundermans aired on Nickelodeon from 2013 to 2018. The series followed superhero twins Phoebe Thunderman (Kira Kosarin) and Max Thunderman (Jack Griffo) in their daily school lives as they kept their superhero identities a secret, all the while wrestling with their different personalities. Created and executive produced by Jed Spingarn, The Thundermans ranked as the top series across all TV in the Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11 categories.

In The Thundermans Return, Kosarin and Griffo reprise their roles as Phoebe and Max, respectively, with Blasi returning as their mother Barb Thunderman. The official description states audiences will get to see “the return of show favorites, new villains and familiar locations.”

The film description continues: “After three years of fighting crime in their new city of Metroburg, The Thundermans are suddenly stripped of their assignment and sent back to Hiddenville. While Hank and Barb look forward to their return ‘home’, Chloe develops new friend groups, Billy and Nora enjoy a normal school life, and Max and Phoebe are determined to regain their superhero status.”

Along with Kosarin, Griffo, Dan Cross and David Hoge as executive producers, Spingarn serves as writer and executive producer. Trevor Kirschner directs.

Gloria Estefan to Host This Year’s Kennedy Center Honors Ceremony

Gloria Estefan is preparing to take Center stage.

The 66-year-old Cuban Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and entrepreneur will return as host of this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, which will air on CBS on Wednesday, December 27.

Gloria EstefanBilly Crystal, Renée Fleming, Barry Gibb, Queen Latifah and Dionne Warwick are this year’s recipients.

The ceremony will air from 9:00 – 11:00 pm ET/PT and stream on Paramount+.

The actual ceremony, one of the biggest entertainment events of the year for D.C. politicos and media, will take place on December 3. This year’s event also will honor the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

Done+Dusted is returning as producer in association with ROK Productions. Elizabeth Kelly is executive producer along with David Jammy, and Alex Rudzinski is the director.

Estefan received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2017.

The ceremony traditionally has been preceded the night before by a dinner hosted by the U.S. Secretary of State. Stephanie Beatriz to Star in the Sci-Fi Series “The Disco Ball”

The 42-year-old Colombian-Bolivian Argentine actress will star in the sci-fi series The Disco Ball.

Stephanie BeatrizBeatriz will star opposite Costa Ronin in the series from online storytelling platform StoryCo, with Halo showrunner Kyle Killen attached.

In the sci-fi-series, Beatriz will play Captain Alma Cooke, who leads a team of astronauts thrust into a journey to save the multiverse. Ronin also stars, with Lionel Boyce, Baron Ryan and Teddy Sears in supporting roles.

The first chapter launches today as the debut project on StoryCo, a collaborative online platform that allows creatives to create multimedia stories and build communities around them.

A multi-chapter arc will unfold over the next several months, with creators from around the world collaborating with Killen and others to expand and build on the story.

The Disco Ball will be produced through in part through ‘Co/Create’ initiatives, where artists, musicians, actors, producers, writers and other creatives are invited to key elements of the story alongside the core team. That work is integrated into the main narrative and rewarded with upfront compensation and a share of future profits through StoryCo’s ‘Profit Points’ system, which rewards meaningful contributions.

So far, the backstory of the antagonist was illustrated by Nigerian art student Okereafor Aanu, a supplementary character was developed by New York high school teacher Aaron Arm, a voice performance is provided by retired Disney Imagineer staffer Roy Berglund and a song that will feature in a later chapter comes from Arizona synth pop duo Fuzzle.

Killen is the writer. He’s known for creating Fox’s Lone Star, NBC’s Awake and ABC’s Mind Games during the 2010s. He also co-wrote the Jodie Foster-directed 2011 film The Beaver and Kevin and Michael Goetz’s Scenic Route.

More recently, he was showrunner and executive producer on Paramount+ sci-fi series Halo, and created Fox pilot The Last Police, which was passed over last year as we revealed at the time. Next year, he’s set to be showrunner on Netflix’s Man on Fire.

Beatriz is best known for her work on television in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She has also starred in Twisted Metal and the Disney film Encanto.
