Derbez’s “Instructions Not Included” Makes U.S. Box Office History

Sure, he may be a star in Mexico… But Eugenio Derbez is now making box office history in the United States…

The 52-year-old Mexican actor’s latest film Instructions Not Included, released by Pantelion Films, has become the highest grossing Spanish Language film ever released in the U.S., according to the film’s distributor Lionsgate.

With this weekend’s box office estimate of $3.38 million, the breakout family dramedy has earned $38.567M in its fifth weekend at the American box office.

Starring and directed by Derbez, the film has surpassed Pan’s Labyrinth’s $37.6M to become the new record holder.

It’s also the fourth biggest grossing foreign language film ever in the U.S., behind only Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Taiwan), Life is Beautiful (Italy) and Hero (China).

Word of mouth spread for Instructions Not Included due to a strong ‘A+’ CinemaScore, and the film expanded its U.S. run to target crossover audiences.

Made for only $5M, the film centers on a man (Derbez) who has made a new life for himself and the daughter left on his doorstep six years ago. His family life finds is threatened when the birth mother resurfaces.

The film was the big story coming out of Labor Day weekend for the best-ever domestic debut for a Spanish language film.

Saldaña Inks Deal with Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films

Zoë Saldaña could be producing more Latino projects in the near future…

The 35-year-old Puerto Rican/Dominican-American has inked a deal with Lionsgate, the independent film and television distribution company, to develop further content for the Hispanic market.

Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films studio will start producing film and television projects with Saldaña Productions, a company run by Zoe and her sister Cisely, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“We look forward to a fruitful and productive relationship with Pantelion,” the Avatar star said in a statement.

Pantelion Films, the first major Latino-focused Hollywood studio, was launched in 2010 in partnership with Mexico’s Grupo Televisa. Two years later it teamed up with Televisa to create English-language TV content with Latina flair.

Last December, Saldaña’s production company teamed up with producers Jane Startz and Aida Bernal to option Joy Castro’s mystery thriller Hell or High Water.

Guzman to Star in Lucha Libre-Inspired Comedy “Aztec Warrior”

It looks like Luis Guzman will be masking his acting talents in the near future…

The 55-year-old Puerto Rican actor has signed on to star in Aztec Warrior, a Lucha Libre-inspired action comedy from Pantelion Films.

In the Scott Sanders-directed film, Guzman will play the Warrior who goes up against his rival El Diablo, to be played by Mexican comedian/actor Eugenio Derbez.

Terry Crews, Nadine Velazquez and Desperate Housewives’ Lupe Ontiveros are set to co-star in the film.

Guzman, who starred in Boogie Nights and HBO’s How To Make It In America, most recently appeared on the big screen in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Filming on Aztec Warrior is set to begin next month in New Orleans.
