He may have come up just short of gold, but Yasmani Acosta Fernandez still earned Chile a historic Olympic medal.
The 36-year-old Chilean-Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler lost to five-time gold medalist Mijain Lopez in the men’s Greco-Roman wrestling 130kg final 6-0 on Tuesday at the 2024 Summer Olympics, but his silver medal give Chile its first medal ever in wrestling.
It’s the second medal for Chile in Paris this year.
Fernandez, who moved to Chile to give himself a better chance of competing in the big events, previously competed at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
He won the gold medal in his event at the 2024 Pan American Wrestling Championships held in Acapulco, Mexico.
A few days later, at the Pan American Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament held in Acapulco, Mexico, he earned a quota place for Chile for the 2024 Summer Games.
