Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Handily Defeats 10-Term Incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York Primary

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has pulled up a major political upset… and will most likely become the youngest woman in the U.S. Congress.

The 28-year-old Latina activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th congressional district on Tuesday in the most shocking upset of a crazy political season.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Ocasio-Cortez won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley — the fourth-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives— outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin.

This was the first time in 14 years a member of his own party has attempted to unseat Crowley, who chairs the Queens County Democrats.

“This is not an end, this is the beginning. This is the beginning because the message that we sent the world tonight is that it’s not OK to put donors before your community,” Ocasio-Cortez told supporters on Tuesday night.

She cast her victory as the green shoots of triumph over the “deep midnight and darkness” of the political moment — and a message to fellow progressive organizers that their brand of activism could succeed on a grander scale.

“You have given this country hope, you have given this country proof that when you knock on your neighbor’s door, when you come to them with love, when you let them know that no matter your stance, you are there for them — that we can make change,” she said.

Even as Ocasio-Cortez ran defiantly to his left — with universal health care, a federal jobs guarantee and the abolition ofICEheadlining her demands — Crowley touted a formidable liberal record of his own. He was the first member of the House Democratic leadership to sign on in support of “Medicare for all” and has been a vocal advocate for immigrants’ rights. But he also stumbled, repeatedly, on the campaign trail, the likely residue of passing so many years without a primary test.

Citing scheduling conflicts, he missed a debate in the Bronx with Ocasio-Cortez, sending former city councilwoman Annabel Palma as a surrogate. The New York Times editorial board took note of his no-show, and warned the ambitious congressman against taking his constituents for granted.

“What are we,” the board asked on behalf of voters, “chopped liver?”

In an interview hours before the polls opened Tuesday, Ocasio-Cortez called his absence that night “disrespectful, not just to me but to the entire community.” On Twitter after the debate, she noted that Palma, also Latina, bore a “slight resemblance to me.”

“I understand he hasn’t been challenged for 14 years,” Ocasio-Cortez said, “but that doesn’t mean that an election isn’t happening. In fact, what’s happening right now is historic and it’s an opportunity to show up for the community.”

She has also spent time at the front lines of the pitched battle over US border policy under the Donald Trump administration. Last weekend, just days before the primary, Ocasio-Cortez left New York to join protests at an ICE detention center in Texas.

“The reason I was able to do that is because we have built a legitimately strong grassroots movement of organizers here to hold it down for 24 to 48 hours,” she said, “and I think that’s reflective of the strength of what we have built here. It was an advantage, actually, because our community here really wanted to do something and they didn’t want to feel like they were choosing organizing the campaign over choosing to comment and organize around this moment.”

She also managed to tie that activism, along with her vocal, unapologetic demand for the full abolition of ICE to the interests of her district’s diverse population.

“We have families and communities here (in the 14th District) from Ecuador and Colombia, Bangladesh, Korea, Pakistan, and I see them every day, many of them are very scared about what’s going on,” she said. “With my campaign, in terms of immigration, we’re trying to say, ‘Hey, we’ve got your back.'”

Crowley also took some shots at ICE, calling it “fascistic,” but stopping short of demanding its elimination. During a televised debate with Ocasio-Cortez less than two weeks before the primary, Crowley argued that “simply abolishing the agency doesn’t take it out of the hands of (Attorney General) Jeff Sessions or this president.”

He then pivoted to what had been a driving theme of his campaign — the argument that, with Trump in office, Democrats should lean on experienced lawmakers, and away from more ideological firebrands, to navigate the opposition on Capitol Hill.

“It’s about making change in Washington,” said Crowley, who in his leadership role has raised money for Democrats around the country. “It’s about Democrats taking back control of the House of Representatives — and that’s what I’m about doing.”

But with Tuesday’s results, he will be doing it from the sideline.

“I want to congratulate Ms. Ocasio-Cortez on her victory tonight,” Crowley said in a statement. “I look forward to supporting her and all Democrats this November. The Trump administration is a threat to everything we stand for here in Queens and the Bronx, and if we don’t win back the House this November, we will lose the nation we love.”

Longoria Slams Donald Trump During Spirited Democratic National Convention Speech

Eva Longoria is speaking out against Donald Trump

The Democratic National Convention kicked off on Monday in Philadelphia with a wide variety of speakers, including the 41-year-old Mexican American actress and former Desperate Housewives star.

Eva Longoria

Before introducing Senator Cory Booker, Longoria criticized Trump for his comments about Mexican immigrants, for mocking a New York Times reporter with a disability, and for making numerous sexist remarks throughout his campaign and career.

She subsequently referred to Hillary Clinton as “the most qualified presidential candidate ever,” and pointed out that even the convention alone was making history in terms of diversity.

Longoria also repeated a call to action that she has delivered on a number of occasions on behalf of Clinton: “She’s been fighting for us for decades and now it’s time we fight for her.”

Longoria joined several other celebrities at the DNC, which promised to be a star-studded four days.

Others in attendance included Demi Lovato, who talked about her own battle with mental illness, America Ferrera and Chloë Grace Moretz, all of whom campaigned for Clinton.

Here’s the full transcript of Longoria’s speech:

“Hello Philadelphia! Oh man, I am so honored to be here tonight, and I am proud to say I’m with her!

You know, like many of you, this election is very personal to me. I’m from a small town in South Texas and if you know your history, Texas used to be part of Mexico. Now, I’m 9th generation American. My family never crossed a border — the border crossed us. So when Donald Trump calls us criminals and rapists, he’s insulting American families. My father is not a criminal or rapist. In fact, he’s a United States veteran.

When Trump cruelly mocked a disabled reporter, he was also mocking my special needs sister Lisa, and many like her. When he said that a wife who works is a very dangerous thing, he not only insulted me — he insulted my mother, who worked as a special education teacher for 30 years, raised four children while being a wife!

You know, I believe in the candidate who believes in all of us, and that candidate is Hillary Clinton. Hillary has spent her whole life fighting for all Americans, from healthcare reform to equal pay for women to gun safety to protecting the economy. She is the most qualified presidential candidate ever! She’s been fighting for us for decades and now it’s time we fight for her.

Now I’m very proud to be part of that fight, and I’m very proud to be here to introduce my dear friend Cory Booker, but before I do, I want you to take a look at your convention, Philadelphia. A Latina from South Texas is introducing the first black senator from New Jersey on the week we’ll nominate our first woman candidate for president of the United States! Pretty great. So guess what, Donald? It turns out America is pretty great already. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Sen. Cory Booker.”

Muñoz In Line to Take on “Hamilton” Starring Role Following Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Departure

Javier Muñoz could take center stage sooner than later…

Hamilton conceiver-author-composer-lyricist-star Lin-Manuel Miranda is planning to leave the hit Broadway musical in July, possibly as soon as the 9th, leaving the Puerto Rican Broadway actor, his understudy, in line to take on the role permanently.

Javier Muñoz in Hamilton

Muñoz is no newcomer to the show’s title role. Not only has he been playing Alexander Hamilton regularly on the days Miranda doesn’t take the stage, Sunday matinees, but Miranda — in a brilliant tactical move — had Muñoz perform when the First Family attended the show on Broadway.

Moreover, Muñoz has received glowing reviews, with several critics asserting that he’s a better pure musical-theater actor than Miranda, and that he brings a bit sharper edge to the role.

“It takes a little longer to warm to Mr. Muñoz’s more aggressive and angular Hamilton, who wields his ambition like a sword,” Ben Brantley wrote in a second New York Times review of the Broadway production. “But this interpretation does not upset the balance of a revolutionary show about a revolutionary era that seems better every time I see it. … In other words, should you be able to get seats for Hamilton only on a Sunday, you will not lose out.”

Win or lose the Tony for best performance by a leading actor in a musical on June 12 — one of four Tony Awards he’s up for among the Best Musical front-runner’s historic 16 nominations — Miranda’s departure should have zero impact at the box office.

News of an impending departure came out of a just-released Rolling Stone cover story on Miranda, in which he said that he’s likely to replicate the one-year stint he did in his last Broadway show, In The Heights; Hamilton began performances on Broadway last July following an extended sold-out run at the Public Theater and a break for revisions.

Jenni Rivera’s Sister, Rosie, to Release Book Entitled “Mis Pedazos Rotos”

There’s another Jenni Rivera-inspired book headed to a bookstore near you…

Rosie Rivera, the youngest sister of the late Mexican American singer, has written a book entitled Mis Pedazos Rotos.

Rosie Rivera Book Mis Pedazos Rotos

The book will go on sale on February 2, 2016, on Celebra, the Penguin imprint that has published memoirs by major Latin names, including Jennifer LopezRicky Martin and Emilio Estefan.

The bio’s tag line reads: “Healing scars from sexual abuse through faith, family and love.”

The youngest in the Rivera family, Rosie Rivera was thrust into the spotlight after the death in a plane crash of her famous older sister Jenni in 2012. Beloved by Jenni, Rosie was left in charge of her sister’s estate and her children.

But even prior to her older sister’s death, Rosie had spoken often of the sexual abuse she suffered as a child and of how she had survived and gone beyond the horrors.

Mis Pedazos Rotos marks the first time she tells the story in book form.

“Today, as I unveil the cover of my book, is the beginning of bringing a dream to life,” said Rivera in a statement “It’s a mission that began in my sister’s heart 18 years ago. When I told Jenni about being sexually abused, she planted a seed in my heart: ‘Sister, you have to write a book about your life to help other abused girls.’ At the time, I thought she was crazy….But she saw beyond the pain and the broken pieces. She saw Victory. Sister, the seed is bearing fruit. Thanks for motivating me to fight battles. It’s our victory. High freakin five sister!!!”

Rosie Rivera’s memoir will be the latest in a string of books attached to Jenni Rivera.

Following her death Billboard writer Leila Cobo published a biography titled Jenni Rivera: The Incredible Story of a Warrior Butterfly, on Penguin.  Then came Rivera’s own memoir, Unbreakable, which she had written prior to her death and which became a New York Times bestseller.

Earlier this year, her daughter, Chiquis Rivera, published a memoir titled Forgiveness. And in October, Atria (which also published Unbreakable) put out Jenni Vive: Unforgettable, Baby!, a collection of never-before-seen photos and previously unpublished pages from Rivera’s journal.

New Rivera Book of Never-Before-Seen Photos and Previously Unpublished Journal Entries Released This Week

She may be gone, but Jenni Rivera’s legacy lives on…

The late Mexican-American singer, who died in a plane crash nearly three years ago at the age of 43, is the subject of a new book coming out on Tuesday (October 27) via Atria Books.

Jenni Rivera

Entitled Jenni Vive: Unforgettable, Baby! after one of her beloved songs (“Inolvidable”) and edited by the Jenni Rivera Estate, the book is a collection of never-before-seen photos and previously unpublished pages from La Diva de la Banda’s journal.

The book opens with a heartfelt letter from her mother, Rosa, which sets the tone for this moving tribute to the Mexican superstar’s life.

Jenni Rivera Book

Rivera’s family members personally compiled some of her most treasured keepsakes — childhood pictures, handwritten notes to her children — as well as fan and celebrity remembrances to offer an intimate look at the idol.

The journal excerpts are meant to give insight into the inspirational figure behind the diva, who persevered in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

Rivera’s official memoir, Unbreakable, released in 2013, was a New York Times bestseller.

Slim Becomes Largest Shareholder of the New York Times Company

It’s the best of (New York) Times for Carlos Slim

The Mexican business magnate, investor and philanthropist, once ranked as the richest person in the world, now owns more of the New York Times Company than does the Sulzberger family, which has controlled the news provider since 1896.

Carlos Slim

Slim became the dominant investor after paying $101.1 million to exercise warrants that boosted his ownership of Class A shares by 11.9 million to 27.8 million, equal to 16.8% of the voting stock, the company says.

Slim acquired the warrants in 2009 when he bought $250 million of the Times’ notes. The investment helped see the company through a dark period as print ads fell, and it had to invest in its digital platform. The terms guaranteed Slim a sweet return of 14% a year; the company repaid the loan in 2011.

The Times says that it will return the cash it just collected from Slim to investors, using it to repurchase its publicly traded Class A shares.

“We believe it is in the best interests of the company to continue to maintain a conservative balance sheet and a prudent view on the allocation of free cash flow, and this one-off repurchase program should not be viewed as a change of position about our capital allocation plans,” CEO Mark Thompson says. The Times has lost about 19.2% of its market value over the last 52 weeks.

Late last year the news organization offered buyouts to 87 journalists — including some of its most senior reporters – and laid off at least 21.

“These are very difficult days as we are losing some valued colleagues and friends,” Publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr. said at the time. But these and other staff reductions throughout the organization are necessary as we confront the realities of a radically changing industry.”
