Rivera Still the Carolina Panthers’ Head Coach…

Ron Rivera is still a panther

The 50-year-old half-Puerto Rican/half-Mexican American NFL football coach remains the head coach of the Carolina Panthers after several coaches throughout the National Football League lost their jobs on Monday.

Ron Rivera

Rivera’s future still remains uncertain as he’s scheduled to have a postseason meeting with owner Jerry Richardson in the near future. No word yet on when that meeting will take place.

Richardson remained mum on the second -year coach’s status one day after the Panthers won their fourth straight game to finish 7-9, a one-game improvement over 2011. He declined comment on Rivera’s job security through the public relations staff.

Rivera said Monday at a news conference he hasn’t spoken to Richardson about his future since Sunday’s 44-38 victory over the New Orleans Saints, but indicated that the meeting is upcoming.

“What I was told is Mr. Richardson and I will sit down and discuss things and we’ll go from there,” said Rivera. “I can’t tell you anything more than that. I do look forward to the opportunity to meet with him and discuss this.”

Rivera, the only Latino head coach in the NFL, has two years left on his contract.

Richardson might hire a general manager to get his input before deciding Rivera’s fate.He can now begin interviewing potential GM candidates from teams whose seasons are complete. And he’s hired former New York Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi to serve as a consultant for the GM search. Potential candidates include Giants college scouting director Marc Ross, Giants senior pro personnel analyst Dave Gettleman, and Panthers interim GM Brandon Beane.

Longtime Panthers GM Marty Hurney was fired after the team’s 1-5 start and the owner put Rivera on notice at that point. Richardson told Rivera at the time the Panthers needed to be “trending upward” the rest of the season. The Panthers went 6-4 the rest of the way.

They finished strong, winning five of their last six games, including a convincing 30-20 victory over the NFC’s top seeded Atlanta Falcons, despite the fact they had five starters and 14 players overall on injured reserve.

“I like where we are and I like the things that we have done,” said Rivera. “I believe we are better now than when I first got here. And it’s a job that I would like to have.”

Despite failing to reach the postseason, there were several bright spots for the Panthers. The offense finished in high gear after struggling in the early part of the season, while the defense was strong throughout despite losing four starters.

The Panthers saw the continued development of second-year quarterback Cam Newton, particularly in the final six games when he completed 66 percent of his passes for 1,474 yards with 10 touchdowns and only two interceptions. Newton also ran for 347 yards and four scores during that span.

Overall, Newton’s numbers were on par with his rookie year, throwing for 3,869 yards passing with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He ran for 741 yards and eight touchdowns, down from his NFL-record of 14 TDs last season when he was voted Offensive Rookie of the Year.

“The biggest thing is he took a lot of the pressure off himself and we tried to help him take that pressure off,” Rivera said. “I think he got to the point where he realized he didn’t have to make every play. And upon that realization you just saw that development as far as understanding things schematically, understanding the opponent he was to attack, and working on his base fundamentals. His footwork improved and his pocket presence improved.”

Rivera said it’s been tough not knowing his future, but added, “it is part of the process we’re going through and we’ll see how this thing unfolds.”

Cruz Earns First Pro Bowl Nomination…

He’s only been playing in the NFL for three years, but Victor Cruz has already reached a major career milestone…

The 26-year-old half-Puerto Rican New York Giants wide receiver has earned his first Pro Bowl nomination. Cruz will be joined by two of his teammates, defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and guard Chris Snee.

Victor Cruz

“I’d like to thank all of you who voted for me for this years Pro Bowl. I’m honored to represent the New York Giants,” tweeted Cruz after learning he’d made the NFC reserve team.

Cruz, a second-team All-Pro selection in 2011 who held lead his team to victory at this year’s Super Bowl, holds the Giants franchise record for most receiving yards in a single season with 1,536.

But Cruz wasn’t the only Latino footballer to earn a Pro Bowl nomination…

Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez was named to the NFC first team. It’s the 36-year-old part-Mexican American football star’s 13th Pro Bowl selection of his career.

Gonzalez is the Pro Bowl all-time leader in receptions (48) and touchdowns (6).

The 2013 Pro Bowl, the NFL’s all-star game for the 2012 season, will take place on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

Romo & the Dallas Cowboys Still in the Playoff Hunt Despite Loss

Despite a heartbreaking loss to the New Orleans Saints, Tony Romo still has one last chance to lead the Dallas Cowboys to the playoffs.

Garrett Hartley‘s winning 20-yard field goal in overtime on Sunday propelled the Saints past Cowboys by a final score of 34-31. But the game turned out to be meaningless to America’s Team’s postseason hopes.

Tony Romo

Despite the Cowboys loss in a third straight game decided on the final play, the New York Giants 33-14 loss against the Baltimore Ravens later Sunday left Dallas in essentially the same position. Beat the Washington Redskins in next weekend’s finale and the Cowboys go to the postseason as NFC East champions.

“Even if we would have won today, we would have needed that game next week obviously,” said Dallas’ 32-year-old Mexican American quarterback, who threw for 416 yards and four touchdowns, including a 19-yarder to Miles Austin that tied the score with 15 seconds left in regulation.

For the third time in five seasons, Dallas (8-7) can get to the playoffs by beating a division rival on the final day of the regular season. The Cowboys lost such games to the Giants last New Year’s night and to Philadelphia in 2008.

“I welcome that challenge,” said Romo. “I think we’ve improved in some areas since those two years.”

With just 1:29 remaining in the game, the Cowboys pulled within a touchdown on a 16-yard pass from Romo to Dwayne Harris. Romo led the Cowboys 64 yards in seven plays, capped by the tying toss to Austin, who caught the ball on his knees in the end zone. It was Dallas’ third overtime game in the past five at home.

“There was no panic,” said Saints quarterback Drew Brees. “It was almost like we knew the game would come down to something like this. We just wanted that opportunity and the defense gave it to us.”

Romo also had a pair of 58-yard scoring passes to Dez Bryant, who had a career-high 224 yards receiving. Romo was 26 of 43 and broke his own franchise record for passing yards in a season. He has 4,685.

Mars Pays Tribute to Newtown Shooting Victims on The Ellen DeGeneres Show

During his recent visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Bruno Mars have a moving tribute to the victims and families of last week’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

The 27-year-old part-Puerto Rican singer, who recently reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, opened the show by performing “Count on Me,” a single from his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, complete with a ukulele.

Bruno Mars

Supported by a lone back-up singer, Mars flawlessly belted out the fitting tribute after a heartfelt introduction by DeGeneres, who decided to kick-off her show differently following the shooting that killed 26 people including 20 school children on Friday, December 14, a tragedy gripping not just the community in Newtown, but the entire nation.

“I think we can all agree right now we need a lot of love out there,” said DeGeneres as she introduced Mars.

It’s the latest in a series of tributes to the victims of the shooting…

On Sunday, New York Giants star Victor Cruz marked up his shoes with a special message to honor one of the young victims, who happened to be a big Cruz fan.

On Monday, Christina Aguilera and her fellow The Voice coaches joined the show’s hosts and contestants to perform a song to honor the victims while each holding a placard with the name of a victim.

Cruz Pays Tribute to Newtown Shooting Victim Jack Pinto

He’s known for his end zone salsa-dancing… But during his NFL game on Sunday Victor Cruz made headlines for his special tribute to one of the young victims of the heartbreaking Newtown, Connecticut school shooting…

The 26-year-old half-Puerto Rican New York Giants wide receiver wrote a personal message in honor of 6-year-old Jack Pinto, a fan of Cruz’s who was one of the victims of Friday’s shooting.

Victor Cruz II

“It was emotional. I was fighting back tears to do it,” said Cruz. “It felt good to honor a family that was going through so much and perhaps to think that messages go out to these athletes — and some athletes just brush them off. So, it felt good to be one of the athletes that listened to that family and did something to pay tribute to them. It felt special.”

Writing something on cleats is usually a fineable offense. However, according to a person informed of the league’s stance in this case, Cruz will not be fined. The person spoke to USA Today Sports on condition of anonymity.

“RIP Jack Pinto,” Cruz wrote. “Jack Pinto, my hero. This one is 4 U!”

Victor Cruz Cleats

He became aware of Jack after his Twitter feed started to blow up with talk that the 6-year-old had been one of his biggest fans. He instructed his publicist, Elaina Watley, to find the family, which took her about 20 minutes. She asked the family members if they wanted to talk to Cruz; and they did.

“I was in the hotel (in Atlanta) and as I was talking to them I was fighting back tears. You could hear everybody in the background crying as well. It was tough to listen to,” Cruz said.

He spoke to Pinto’s 11-year-old brother, who was obviously distraught.

“He could barely speak to me. I was just talking to him, telling him to stay strong, to stay positive and I’m going to help the family any way I can,’’ said Cruz.

Cruz was reportedly told by Jack’s parents that they were considering burying their son in a No. 80 Giants jersey.

He said after the game that he hoped to visit Jack’s family this week, “even if it’s just for an hour.” He added that he planned to bring the shoes and gloves with him as gifts.

Dallas Quarterback Romo Exceeds Career Passing Milestone

It’s turning out to be Lucky No. 7 for Dallas Cowboys star Tony Romo

Along with leading America’s Team to an overtime win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, the 32-year-old Mexican-American quarterback broke the 25,000 yards passing milestone during the game. And he achieved that feat by doing something to a Pittsburgh defense that hadn’t been done in 21 games — throw for 300 yards.

Tony Romo

The Steelers hadn’t allowed more than 200 yards passing in their previous eight games before Sunday.

Romo completed 30-of-42 passes for 341 yards with touchdown passes to Jason Witten and Dez Bryant to continue his hot December days. In three wins this month, Romo has six touchdown passes and one interception with 912 yards passing.

In his last seven games, Romo has 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions.

“I think as the season progresses you understand what your team needs, what we’re good at, what we’re struggling at,” Romo said. “I said it earlier in the year, we made some mistakes that cost us (and those are) things we haven’t made lately.”

It’s the latest feat for Romo, a three-time Pro Bowl selection.

Earlier this season, the first-time father passed Troy Aikman‘s career mark to become the franchise’s new career touchdown passes leader.

During Sunday’s game, Cowboys cornerbackBrandon Carr helped seal the victory for the Cowboys when he intercepted a pass from Ben Roethlisberger and returned it 36 yards to the 1 yard line in overtime.

Dan Bailey‘s 21-yard field goal gave the Cowboys the 27-24 winover Pittsburgh in front of thousands of Steelers fans at Cowboys Stadium.

The winning kick came after Romo took a knee to put Bailey in better position.

The Cowboys (8-6) moved into a three-way tie for the NFC East lead with the New York Giants and Washington Redskins. The Cowboys have won three straight and five of their six games.
