David Noriega Joins NBC News & MSNBC as Los Angeles-Based Correspondent

David Noriega has a new base…

The Colombian American journalist and broadcast news correspondent has joined NBC News and MSNBC as a correspondent based in Los Angeles.

David NoriegaNoriega previously worked at Vice News, where he covered criminal justice, organized extremism and labor issues, as well as migration across North and South America, North Africa and Europe.

Betsy Korona, senior vice president of editorial newsgathering, wrote in a memo to staffers that Noriega “has reported nationally and internationally on a wide-range of stories including asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border, mass shootings in America, the fentanyl crisis, teachers’ strikes in Los Angeles and Denver, Brazil’s election upheaval, and the demobilization of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.”

Noriega also hosted and was co-director of the digital series Border to Border, which looked at the international borders on three continents.

He previously was a national reporter at BuzzFeed News.

He received Emmy nominations for his coverage of Central American migration, the Venezuelan political crisis and the assassination of environmentalists in Colombia.

His work has won awards from The New York Press Club, The National Association of Hispanic Journalists and The French-American Foundation.

 

María Elena Salinas to Give Keynote Address During NAHJ’s Virtual Graduation Celebration

María Elena Salinas is hoping to inspire this year’s graduates…

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) will host a virtual graduation celebration on June 6 to commemorate the organization’s graduating college seniors, and the 65-year-old broadcast journalist, news anchor and author will give the keynote address.

Following social distancing recommendations dictated by the CDC, graduations across the country to date have been altered, canceled, postponed or held virtually.

The nation’s largest association for Hispanic journalists will honor NAHJ member college graduates on Saturday, June 6 at 1:00 pm ET.  

Multiple commencement addresses will be given by industry leaders in the field to share advice and words of inspiration to the Class of 2020.

In addition to Salinas, who is considered the “Voice of Hispanic America,” students will also hear from Maria HinojosaJosé Díaz-BalartFin GómezRobert HernandezObed Manuel-EstradaJoy Diaz and more. 

“Our mission is to help the professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry,” said Alberto B. Mendoza, NAHJ Executive Director. “We focus heavily on our students and are committed to being there from the beginning of their careers.

Sandoval Named CNN Newsource National Correspondent

Polo Sandoval is heading to our nation’s capital…

The Latino broadcast journalist has been hired by CNN Newsource as a national correspondent.

Sandoval, who most recently served as the Hidalgo County bureau chief for the Rio Grande Valley’s ABC affiliate KRGV-TV, will be based in Washington, D.C.

During his time at KRGV, Sandoval covered the on-going breaking news at a fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, as well as reported from both the Democratic and Republican national conventions in 2008 and 2012.

Sandoval’s experience with enterprise reporting from the Texas-Mexico border on topics ranging from immigration, homeland security, drug cartels and the resulting violence along the border, human trafficking, government benefits fraud, politics and human interest stories is expected to complement CNN Newsource and its offerings for its affiliates.

“Polo is a versatile and talented journalist, who gets to the crux of a story,” said Paul Crum, vice president of news operations, administration and affiliate services for CNN/U.S. “His range of enterprise reporting from the field will further enhance CNN Newsource.”

Sandoval has earned recognition from the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters and the Lone Star Emmy chapter. He’s a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE).

CNN Newsource, comprised of more than 800 affiliates including TV stations and local/regional cable news channels throughout North America, is the most widely distributed syndicated news service.

Geraldino Joins Al Jazeera America as a Correspondent

Duarte Geraldino has landed a high-profile reporting job.

The Afro-Latino American journalist, writer and host has been named a national correspondent for Al Jazeera America.

Geraldino will serve as a correspondent for the network’s Real Money With Ali Velshi financial program.

He’s also expected to provide live business news coverage throughout the day.

Geraldino, a former Wall Street corporate finance analyst, has served as a contributor to Bloomberg TV and the CBS Affiliate News Service.

Born and raised in New York City, Geraldino is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists.
