Aguilar to Headline TR3s’ Next “MTV Unplugged” Special

Pepe Aguilar is about to get unplugged

The 45-year-old Mexican American ranchera and mariachi singer-songwriter has been chosen to be part of TR3s’ (formerly known as MTV TR3s) next MTV Unplugged special.

Pepe Aguilar

Aguilar, known for his velvety voice and refined arrangements, has long alternated between pop and ranchero. But he’s best known for the latter, especially since he’s almost always wearing a charro outfit.

Aguilar also has rocker roots though, and has long talked about delving in that genre. His MTV Unplugged special could be the perfect opportunity.

“I normally fuse Mexican music with other rhythms and concepts,” Aguilar told Billboard in an exclusive interview. “Here it’s going to be the other way round. I’m going to have a traditional musical foundation—drums, bass, guitars, piano, organ—and we will incorporate mariachi to that.”

But it won’t only be mariachi. Although Aguilar and TR3s are still fine-tuning the production details, Aguilar’s MTV Unplugged special will be a fusion of sounds, produced by Emmanuel “Meme” del Real, one of the founding members of Mexican alt band Café Tacuba (and co-producer of Juanes’ latest album). This will mark the first time Aguilar is produced by someone other than himself, much less a rocker.

“Meme comes from a completely different background than mine, so joining these two experiences will be very interesting,” says Aguilar, who plans on covering several of his big hits.

Aguilar’s MTV Unplugged album is slated for release later this year.

TR3s’ last MTV Unplugged was Juanes’ 2012 MTV Unplugged, which earned album of the year honors at the 2012 Latin Grammys Awards.

Jesse & Joy Nominated for First-Ever MTV Video Music Award

Jesse & Joy could be corriendo to the stage at MTV Video Music Awards

The Mexican pop-rock duo – who reached a whole new level of success with their massive hit single ¡Corre! – have been nominated in the Best Latino Artist category.

Jesse & Joy

It’s the first MTV Video Music Award nod for the brother and sister act comprised of Jesse Huerta and Joy Huerta, who were last year’s Latin Grammy darlings.

Jesse & Joy are up against Alejandro Sanz, Pitbull, Daddy Yankee and Don Omar.

The winner will be determined in a public vote held via the MTV Tr3s website. And the winner will collect the award at the MTV VMAs ceremony, which will be held at New York’s Barclays Center on August 25.

Lopez to Star in FX Series “Saint George”

It’s official… George Lopez is returning to sitcom television.

The 51-year-old Mexican American comedian and actor will star in the FX series Saint George.

George Lopez

Lopez will be portraying a successful engineer with a demanding ex-wife and an overbearing mother, as well as an 11-year-old son and an uncle.

The “Saint” part of the series’ name stems from his character’s new role as a philanthropist; he likes “giving back” by teaching history weekly at night school.

Saint George was created by Lopez and his producing partners Matt Williams and David McFadzean.

Under the deal, FX has given an initial 10-episode order to the project. If it meets pre-set ratings thresholds over the 10-episode run, the network will order an additional 90-episode pickup, the way it did last year with Charlie Sheen’s Anger Management sitcom.

The new show will reflect Lopez’s “no-holds-barred comedic take on the tensions surrounding race, class, sex and family life in Los Angeles through the eyes of a man straddling two separate cultures,” said Lionsgate Television’s president Kevin Beggs.

It’s Lopez’s first starring role in a sitcom since his ABC series George Lopez, which ended in 2007. It aired for six seasons and 120 episodes; and it has enjoyed a strong afterlife in syndication. A decade after its ABC premiere, the show continues to perform well in primetime on cable, Nick at Nite and a Spanish-language version on MTV Tr3s, as well as the afternoon in broadcast syndication.

Romeo Santos

The 31-year-old Dominican-American, who sold out Madison Square Garden twice last year, beat out some serious competition for the award: Jennifer Lopez, Wisin y Yandel, Pitbull and Juanes.

“To receive the award leaves me speechless,” says Santos in a statement. “I owe it to all the votes [I received] from my fans. Thank you, what a blessing!”

The Spanish-subtitled transmission of the MTV VMA show will be broadcast on September 15 at 9:00 pm ET on MTV Tr3s.

Earlier this year, Santos picked up two awards at the Premios Juventud, including Most Played Album for his first solo venture, Fórmula Vol 1.

Dulce María Singing Theme for MTV Latin America’s “Ultimo Año”

If you’ve been longing for new Dulce María music, you’re in luck

The 26-year-old Mexican singer/actress is returning to the Latin music scene in the coming weeks with the single “Es un drama,” the official  theme song for MTV Latin America‘s new novela Ultimo Año.

Dulce Maria

“Dulce María has proven to be one of the most popular Latin music performers and a favorite of MTV Latin America’s audience,” said Marc Zimet, Vice President of Music and Talent for VIMN The Americas. “’Es un drama’ is the perfect combination of original, entertaining and distinctive music for MTV’s new novela”.

Dulce María, a former member of the Mexican band RBD, will release a music video in support of “Es un drama,” which was written by Mexican singer Paty Cantu. Taped last May in Mexico City, the music clip shows Dulce María and the novela‘s cast at an after party tearing a house apart. In addition, the video reportedly includes some steamy scenes featuring Dulce Maria as never seen before.

The music video will premiere as part of El Making of special on MTV Latin America on Tuesday, August 7th at 8pm, with the video available via social media websites and online the next day.

Es un drama” is Dulce María’s triumphant return to music after the release of her successful solo debut in 2009 with Extranjera and in 2011 with Extranjera p2. This new theme song features more of a “rock” vibe than her previous work.

Currently, she’s hard at work on a new album, which will be released in late 2012.

Meanwhile, Ultimo Año—a youthful psychological thriller, which tells the story of a group of students belonging to the high class—will premiere on MTV Latin America on September 3rd, 2012 and subsequently in the US through MTV Tr3s.

The novela’s main cast includes Kendra Santa Cruz, Martín Barba, Iliana Gomez and Mauricio Henao.
