Mana to Celebrate Mexican Independence Day with Two Las Vegas Concerts

Maná is preparing for a grito in Nevada…

The legendary Mexican rock band will celebrate Mexican Independence Day with two concerts at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Mana

The just-announced shows will take place September 15 and 16, celebrating Mexicans’ revolt against Spanish rulers — not be confused with Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates the Mexican victory over French troops in the Battle of Puebla.

While the band’s announcement did not mention anything about Donald Trump, the choice of celebrating Mexican Independence Day in a U.S. venue may be a jab at the current U.S. president from the band, particularly frontman Fher Olvera, who has frequently spoken out against Trump’s immigration policies and his statements about Latinos.

“Sometimes the results disappoint us or worry us, but they should never get us on our knees,” the singer said the day after the election. “Us Latinos will continue to keep our head up high and work to change what we don’t like, to have the life, country and world we want.”

The Las Vegas shows, which will be Maná’s only U.S. arena concerts in 2017, can be expected to rival the energy of the most fervent political rally.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 31, at 10 a.m. PST.

Serrat Named the 2014 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year

Joan Manuel Serrat is preparing to receive an honor befitting a music legend…

The 70-year-old Spanish singer/songwriter has been declared the 2014 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year.

Joan Manuel Serrat

He’ll be feted during a special gala event on November 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The Barcelona-born star started playing music as a teenager as he learned the craft both as a songwriter and performer. In 1965, he landed a record deal after singing on the Spanish radio show Radioscope.

Serrat then released two EPs and a full-length debut album and went on to perform live on stage at the Palau de la Música Catalana. That showcase propelled him to become one of the pioneers of the Nova Cançó movement in Spain’s Catalonian region.

Known as a politically outspoken performer, Serrat once refused to follow dictator Francisco Franco‘s orders to perform a song in Spanish instead of Catalan during the Eurovision song contest in the late ’60s. He was banned from performing in Spanish media for five years. In the ’70s, he went into a self-imposed exile in Mexico after speaking out against the Franco dictatorship. He did not return to Spain until after Franco’s death in 1975.

“As a profound and brilliant songwriter, a true poet in Spanish and Catalan and a sensational performer, Joan Manuel Serrat’s lyrical style and magnificent talent make him a treasured and timeless musical figure,” said Gabriel Abaroa Jr., president/CEO of the Latin Recording Academy. “Through his talent, artistry, passion, and dedication to his craft, his work has spoken to music fans all over. It is a privilege to recognize a man with such an illustrious and socially conscious career, and we look forward to celebrating his creativity and legacy.”

Serrat released Dedicado A Antonio Machado, Poeta in 1969 in honor of the Spanish poet, and the album received critical acclaim throughout Spain and Latin America. For the last two decades, the singer has had a prolific songwriting, recording and touring career.

In 2006 he released , his first album recorded completely in Catalan after nearly a decade. In 2008 he collaborated with Spanish singer/songwriter Joaquín Sabina and released Dos Pájaros De Un Tiro, followed by 2012’s La Orquesta Del Titanic. The 2013 documentary El Símbolo Y El Cuate chronicled their tour.

“Joan Manuel has become a true symbol for freedom, coherence, quality, and perfect use of our language, and a reference that we all have in reaching our goals,” said Latin Grammy and Grammy winner Shakira, who was the Latin Recording Academy’s Person of the Year in 2011.

In addition to Shakira, Serrat joins an impressive group of artists who have received the Person of the Year honor that includes Miguel Bosé, Plácido Domingo, Gloria Estefan, Gilberto Gil, Juan Luis Guerra, Carlos Santana, and Caetano Veloso.

The Latin Grammys will be held a day after the Person of the Year festivities on November 20 and will broadcast live on the Univision at 8:00 pm ET.

Mars Leads the Pack of All-Star Latino Performers at the Billboard Music Awards

He may not have claimed any trophies, but Bruno Mars still managed to make his mark at this year’s Billboard Music Awards.

Bruno Mars

The 27-year-old part-Puerto Rican singer-songwriter, who was nominated for four awards, kicked off the three-hour show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena with a high-octane performance.

Mars, dressed to the nines as usual, took the stage to perform his latest single “Treasure.”

But Mars wasn’t the only Latino performer of the night…

Selena Gomez performed her catchy single “Come and Get It” on the show.

The song, the first single off the 20-year-old half-Mexican American singer-actress’ upcoming album recently made its way into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Jennifer Lopez, the night’s best-dressed artist on the red carpet, had the world seeing red…

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican singer/actress busted a move on stage while performing her latest single “Live It Up” alongside Pitbull during the show.

The song, her third single with the Cuban rap superstar, is already generating serious buzz, especially after the release of the official music video for the track.

Miguel, meantime, made a splash at the Billboard Music Awards when he  landed on top of an unsuspecting audience member while taking the stage.

During his performance of his hit single “Adorn”, the 27-year-old half-Mexican American R&B artist jumped and landed his crotch smack on top of a girl in the crowd. Later, he also appeared to kick another girl in the head after jamming out to his hit.

“got caught up in the moment, thank goodness Khyati is okay” Miguel tweeted after his performance.

Last but certainly not least… Christina Aguilera showed off her slimmer physique f while performing at the awards show.

The 32-year-old half-Ecuadorian singer and returning The Voice coach joined Pitbull on stage to perform their song “Feel This Moment” during the show.

Aguilera and Mr. 305 were later joined by A-ha singer Morten Harket. The duo sample A-ha’s “Take On Me” in their hit single.

Aguilera to Perform at the Billboard Music Awards

Christina Aguilera may be taking a break from The Voice this season… But she’s still making  music.

The 32-year-old half-Ecuadorian American singer will be performing at this year’s Billboard Music Awards next month.

Christina Aguilera

Aguilera will join her “Feel This Moment” co-collaborator Pitbull, “Come and Get It” singer Selena Gomez and rap duo of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis as performers at the awards show, which will take place on May 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Other artists joining the star-studded lineup include The Band Perry and Kacey Musgraves.

Pitbull and The Band Perry are both competing against previously announced performers Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars and Miguel for this year’s Milestone Award, which will be given to the fan favorite who gets the most votes online. A lucky fan will get the chance to present the award personally to the winning artist along with co-presenter Cee-Lo Green.

Miguel to Release “Art Dealer Chic” EPs This Summer

Miguel is giving his fans a chic series of gifts…

The 26-year-old half-Mexican singer-songwriter will be releasing three new EPs this summer, entitled the Art Dealer Chic series.

Miguel

“This time it’ll be bigger and better,” Miguel told VIBE. “I intend on having limited-edition apparel with them, so it’ll be really dope.”

Similar to Miguel’s first series, the upcoming EPs will feature three tracks each.

There aren’t any details as to whether the second series will lead into his third album, just as his smash-hit single “Adorn” segued into his critically acclaimed sophomore album, Kaleidoscope Dream.

Miguel is also working on the remix and video for the Kaleidoscope Dream track, “How Many Drinks,” which will feature Kendrick Lamar.

“Kendrick is poised to be the next staple in hip-hop [and] I certainly intend on becoming that for R&B. I don’t get that vibe that he’s putting on… I just feel like he’s just being honest in his music. Newer, younger artists, that’s what we’re all striving to do. Just be ourselves. Kendrick is one of the best examples of that,” he said.

He added that his collaboration with Lamar will  “sound like a breath of fresh air.” The track is set to debut this month.

Aside from working on new music, Miguel is currently on tour with Alicia Keys and will be performing at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, airing live on ABC from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 19.
