The 58-year-old half-Mexican American musician/bassist and his Metallica mates have surged to No. 1 on the U.K. album chart with 72 Seasons, the fourth chart-topper for the heavy metal band.
Debuting at the summit of the Official U.K. Albums Chart, 72 Seasons is the band’s first U.K. No. 1 in 15 years, and their ninth top 10.
Previously, James Hetfield and Co. led the weekly survey with 1991’s Metallica (aka The Black Album), 1996’s Load, and 2008’s Death Magnetic.
According to the Official Charts Company, 72 Seasons has outsold the rest of the top 5 combined, and it’s the market-leader on vinyl. 72 Seasons led at the midweek stage, and finished its first chart week at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Fans in the U.K. can feel the noise when Metallica’s M72 World Tour 2023/4 stops by Download Festival at Donington Park, with performances on June 8 and June 10.

By blasting to No. 1 on the latest album chart, published April 21, 72 Seasons gives Metallica its eighth leader Down Under.
The band’s mega-hit 1991 LP Metallica (also known as The Black Album) has been certified 13-times platinum by ARIA.
Clocking in at 77 solid minutes, 72 Seasons is the follow up to Hardwired…To Self-Destruct, which also led the ARIA Chart following its release in 2016.
The 58-year-old half-Mexican American musician and his fellow Metallica mates’ single “If Darkness Had a Son,” the latest taste of the hard rock band’s upcoming album, 72 Seasons, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Trending Songs chart dated March 11.
“If Darkness Had a Son” is the third song to be released from 72 Seasons, following the premieres of lead single “Lux Æterna” and fellow promotional single “Screaming Suicide.”
Both songs also made the weekly Hot Trending Songs survey upon release, with “Lux Æterna” reaching No. 6 (Dec. 10, 2022) and “Screaming Suicide” hitting No. 7 (January 28).
“If Darkness Had a Son” debuted on March 1, and thanks to two days of sales and streams, the track concurrently bows at No. 12 on the latest multimetric Hot Hard Rock Songs chart via 1.1 million official U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads, according to Luminate.
72 Seasons, Metallica’s 11th studio album and first since 2016’s Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, is due April 14.

The 58-year-old half-Mexican American musician and his fellow Metallica mates have soared to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart dated December 10 with “Lux Æterna.”
Following its November 28 premiere, the track debuts with 5.3 million in radio audience, 3.3 million official U.S. streams and 4,000 sold through December 1, according to Luminate.
“Lux Æterna” previews 72 Reasons, the band’s 11th studio album, due April 14, 2023.
Metallica previously topped Hot Hard Rock Songs (which began in 2020) for nine weeks starting in July with its 1986 classic “Master of Puppets,” sparked by its synch in Netflix’s Stranger Things.
“Lux Æterna” concurrently charges in at No. 2 on Mainstream Rock Airplay, the chart’s best debut since 2006, when Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Dani California” also began at No. 2.
Metallica ties its highest arrival on the list, matching 2003’s “St. Anger.” The band now boasts 25 top 10s on the tally, dating to its first — “Enter Sandman,” in 1991.
“Lux Æterna” also opens at No. 2 on Rock & Alternative Airplay and becomes the group’s first Alternative Airplay entry since 2009 at No. 35.
The track debuts at No. 1 on Hard Rock Digital Song Sales (marking Metallica’s fifth ruler since the chart began in 2007 and second this year following “Puppets” [seven weeks]) and at No. 7 on Hard Rock Streaming Songs.
72 Reasons is Metallica’s first studio album since Hardwired…to Self-Destruct, which debuted as the band’s sixth No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart in December 2016. The group first led with its self-titled set in August 1991; the album spends a 688th week on the Dec. 10-dated survey, the fourth-longest run in the tally’s history, dating to 1956.

The collection ranges in price from $15 to $165 and is available exclusively at Wolverine.com.
Wolverine will be donating 50% of all sales from the limited-edition collection to Metallica Scholars, the workforce education initiative within the band’s non-profit organization, All Within My Hands.
Metallica Scholars provides “direct support to community colleges to enhance their career and technical education programs.”
This latest collaboration, featuring collectible artwork from artist and Metallica collaboration Brandon Heart, marks the third consecutive year that Metallica and Wolverine have joined forces to fund education programs for the next generation of workers.
“The Metallica Scholars initiative enables students of all ages to embrace workforce education and learn a new trade or upskill to diversify their knowledge base,” saidPeter Delgrosso, Executive Director of All Within My Hands. “While our foundation is very active in supporting workforce education in community colleges across more than half of the U.S., it certainly takes a village. The veteran metal band’s 12th studio album, 72 Seasons, will be released on April 14 via the band’s Blackened Recordings imprint.
The first full-length from the band since 2016’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct, was produced by Greg Fidelman along with Metallica singer/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. At more than 77 minutes, the 12-track collection can be previewed now via the thundering, breakneck first single, “Lux Æterna.”
“72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves,” Hetfield said in a statement announcing the album. “The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”
The band also announced a massive 2023-2024 Live Nation-promoted tour on Monday, November 28, during which they will play two nights in every city they visit, with each No Repeat Weekend featuring two completely different setlists and support acts.
The M72 world tour will feature an in-the-round stage set-up that will move the signature up-close Metallica Snake Pit section to center stage, with the band performing on the circular stage around the 800-1,000-person fan area. The tour will also feature discounted tickets for fans 16 and under.
The world trek is currently slated to kick off on April 27 with a pair of shows at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam, followed by two-night stands in Paris, Hamburg (Germany) and Gothenburg (Sweden) before hitting U.S. shores on August 4 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. for a series of North American gigs currently slated to run through a November 12 show at Ford Field in Detroit. The outing will pick up again on May 24, 2024 with another European swing before returning to North America in August 2024.
Among the rotating group of opening acts slated to join them are: Architects, Mammoth WVH, Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, Volbeat, Pantera and Greta Van Fleet. The 57-year-old half-Mexican American musician and his Metallica band mates are bringing their Helping Hands benefit concert back for a third year, the band has announced.
On behalf of the rockers’ All Within My Hands foundation, the 2022 edition of the Helping Hands Concert and Auction will make its Southern California debut on December 16, when Metallica will hit the stage at L.A.’s Microsoft Theater with a number of yet-to-be-revealed special guests.
Tickets for the special event will go on sale to the general public starting Friday, September 23 at 10:00 am local time. Customers will have two-ticket limit per person — with 100 percent of proceeds going directly to Metallica’s non-profit organization, which aims to create “sustainable communities by tackling issues including hunger and workforce education.”
The band’s last Helping Hands Concert and Auction took place in November 2020 with a livestream that ultimately raised more than $1.8 million for work with partners including Feeding America, the American Association of Community Colleges and a number of COVID-19 and disaster-relief funds.

This weekend, Metallica is headed to New York City to headline the 10th annual Global Citizen Festival along with the likes of Mariah Carey, the Jonas Brothers, Charlie Puth, Måneskin, Rosalía and Mickey Guyton and host Priyanka Chopra. A parallel show will also take place in Accra, Ghana, featuring Usher, Stormzy, H.E.R.,Tems, Uncle Waffles and others to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Ghana’s independence and the 20th anniversary of the African Union.
The 29-year-old Spanish singer and songwriter will take part in this year’s Global Citizen Festival, which is set for Saturday, September 24 with twin shows in New York City and Accra, Ghana.
Rosalia will be part of the U.S. leg alongside Metallica, Charlie Puth, Jonas Brothers, Måneskin, Mariah Carey and Mickey Guyton.
Other New York City performers include Angélique Kidjo and Billy Porter.
Bollywood star and Global Citizen ambassador Priyanka Chopra Jonas will host Global Citizen Festival: NYC, to be staged in Central Park.
For its 10th anniversary edition, Global Citizen expands its program with a show at Ghana’s Black Star Square, featuring performances by Usher, SZA, Stormzy, Gyakie, H.E.R., Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Tems, and Uncle Waffles.
That show will mark the 65th anniversary of Ghana’s independence and the 20th anniversary of the African Union.
The annual concert-with-a-cause will call on world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly and ahead of the G20 and COP27 this November to invest in the future, and to end global hunger.
The international advocacy organization and its supporters want to action, not words.
Among its list of requests, an investment of $600 million into the future of women and girls; close the annual $10 billion climate financing shortfall; $500 million to help African farmers respond to the global food crisis; and provide urgent relief from crushing debts to end extreme poverty.
The health crisis has pushed nearly 100 million more people into extreme poverty and is “reversing recent trends of shrinking inequality, leading to the loss of at least three years of progress,” reads a statement. “Without urgent action now this backsliding will only worsen.”
Also, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has “aggravated the situation further, with as many as 323 million people now facing acute hunger, and1.2 billion people now live in nations experiencing a perfect storm of food, energy, and financial crises. If we don’t take action now, as many as 200 million more people may be plunged into extreme poverty by November.”
The 2022 Global Citizen Festival will be broadcast and streamed on ABC, ABC NewsLive, FX, Hulu, iHeartRadio, TimesLIVE, Twitter, YouTube, and more.
ABC will also broadcast a primetime special Global Citizen Festival: Take Action NOW, on Sunday, September 25 at 7:00 pm ET. Additional tune-in details will follow in the weeks ahead.

For each “action” taken, users earn points that can be redeemed for tickets.

The Mexican-American musical group has signed a record deal with Sony Music Latin through a partnership with Rancho Humilde Records.
The San Bernardino-based band — composed of Jesús Ortiz Paz a.k.a. JOP (lead singer), José García (tuba), Samuel Jaimez (requinto), Khrystian Ramos (guitar) and Moisés López (tololoche) — officially became a group in March 2015, starting off as a local cover band who added East L.A. flavor to their music.
They have since helped push forward the urban corrido movement with their raw penmanship about street life and edgy fusions inspired by Adriel Camacho, Hijos de Barron and Metallica.
Their name derives from the words “strength” and “govern.”
“We feel very good because by signing with Sony Music Latin, this partnership will allow us to do bigger things,” Fuerza Regida’s JOP said in a statement. “To be able to count on the support of a company of this caliber is incredible and a great opportunity. We are very happy to start this new chapter. Pura Fuerza Regida!”
On the Billboard charts, the Mexican-American group has placed 11 entries on Hot Latin Songs, five entries on Latin Airplay, seven entries on Regional Mexican Airplay, five entries on Top Latin Albums and six entries on Regional Mexican Albums, including two No. 1s: Del Barrio Hasta Aqui (2019) and Aqui (2020).

Up next, Fuerza Regida will become the first urban Mexican music group to perform as part of the Made in America festival lineup set for Sept. 3 and 4 at Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The 52-year-old Mexican American musician, singer, songwriter, rapper and activist and his Rage Against the Machine band mates have joined the lineup of the inaugural Andalucia Big Festival in September.
It will marking de la Rocha and the band’s first show in the Spanish city of Malaga in 25 years.
The group will perform alongside Glass Animals, Muse and Jamiroquai at the event that will take place in Malaga at Sacaba Beach on September 8, 9 and 10.
Among the other acts slated to appear at ABF are: Aurora, Gus Dapperton, Biffy Clyro, Years & Years, Stereophonics, Paolo Nutini, Michael Kiwanuka, Kevin Morby, Yard Act, Lucy Dacus, Run the Jewels, Kurt Vile& the Violators, Los Planetas and more.
