Torro-Flor Defeats Romina Oprandi to Claim Her First WTA Singles Title

The 21-year-old Spanish tennis player, competing in her first WTA final, defeated Switzerland’s Romina Oprandi 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Sunday in the Grand Prix SAR final to claim the first WTA singles title of her young career.

After missing the Australian Open with a leg injury, Torro-Flor arrived in Morocco with only three wins to her name this year, but was in devastating form to reach Sunday’s final as she defeated two seeds without dropping a set.

In the final, Torro-Flor broke for a 5-3 lead in the first set but dropped serve at 2-1 in the second as Oprandi evened the match.

The 71st-ranked Spaniard then broke Oprandi twice in the final set to lead 5-1 but wasted a chance to serve out the match.

Both players were in their first final. Torro-Flor had won their only previous meeting two years ago in Bucharest.

Torro-Flor broke into the Top 100 in October 2012. Her previous best result was a semifinal appearance at the Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan in 2013.

Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor is rockin’ in Morocco…

The 21-year-old Spanish tennis player defeated compatriot Garbine Muguruza 6-0, 6-3 on Saturday to reach the finals at the Grand Prix SAR in Marrakesh, Morocco.

It’s the first WTA final for Torro-Flor, who is currently ranked No. 71 in the world.

Torro-Flor missed this year’s Australian Open because of a left leg injury and won only three matches this year entering this week. But she’s managed to knock off two seeds and hasn’t dropped a set to make the final on Sunday.

Torro-Flor will face Romina Oprandi of Switzerland, who beat top-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

She beat Oprandi in their only previous meeting, two years ago in Bucharest.

Muguruza Advances to the Grand Prix SAR Semifinals

Garbine Muguruza is two wins away from earning her next WTA title…

The 20-year-old Venezuelan-Spanish defeated Israel’s Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-1 to reach the Grand Prix SAR semifinals in Morocco on Friday.

Muguruza, the tournament’s fifth seed, won seven straight games against Peer to clinch the first set and lead 5-0 in the second.

She’s enjoying a breakthrough season, as she clinched her first WTA title in January at the Hobart International and finished runner-up at the Brazil Cup in March.

Peer made five double faults and was able to hold serve only once.

Muguruza will next face fellow Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, who edged out Polona Hercog of Slovenia 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).
