Grupo Frontera to Perform in Mexico City’s Zócalo During This Year’s Grito de Independencia

Grupo Frontera will be making a special visit to Mexico’s most iconic plaza…

The Regional Mexican group will perform at Mexico City’s Zócalo — the country’s most important public square — on September 15 for the annual Grito de Independencia event, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced.

“The members of Grupo Frontera will be there on September 15 at night in the Zócalo,” said the Mexican president at the end of his usual morning conference, where he played Frontera’s cover of “No Se Va,” originally by Colombian group Morat.

López Obrador reiterated his taste for the music of the Regional Mexican group, which he has included in his playlist to challenge corridos tumbados, a musical genre that although he has said he will not prohibit, he considers to glorify drug traffickers.

Grupo Frontera joins a long list of national and international artists who have set foot in the second-largest public square in the world, only behind Tiananmen in Beijing. Musicians such as Paul McCartney, Justin Bieber, Manu Chao, Shakira, Café Tacvba and the late icon of regional Mexican music Vicente Fernández, among many others, have performed at the Zócalo.

The attendance record for free concerts held in the so-called Primer Cuadro in the Mexican capital is held by the Argentine rock band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, which achieved the milestone of gathering 300,000 people on the night of June 3, beating Grupo Firme, who held the record after summoning 280,000 people in September 2022, according to figures from the government of Mexico City.

This week, the sextet scored their first top 10 hit on a Billboard album chart with El Comienzo, which jumped 39-4 on the Top Latin Albums chart on August 19 after its first full week of activity.

El Comienzo also jumped 12-2 on Regional Mexican Albums and debuted at No. 39 on the Billboard 200 all-genre chart.

Los Fabulosos Cadillacs’ Free Mexico City Concert Breaks Zócalo Attendance Record

Los Fabulosos Cadillacs are breaking records…

The legendary Argentine rockers drew a crowd of 300,000 to their free concert at Mexico City’s Zócalo, on Saturday, June 3, breaking the attendance record set by Grupo Firme last year, according to data supplied by the local government.

Up until last night, Grupo Firme, the boisterous Regional Mexican group, had drawn the biggest crowd ever (280,000) to the historic Mexican site.

But last night Los Cadillacs bested Grupo Firme and other seminal acts, including Rosalía, Sir Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Shakira, the late ranchera icon Vicente Fernández, and even pop star Justin Bieber.

“¡Winds of liberty, blood of a fighter!” tweeted Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, quoting the lyrics of Los Fabulosos Cadillac’s famous song “Matador.” “We’ve made history again, breaking attendance records with 300,000 people in the Zócalo of Mexico City, enjoying an epic concert from Los Fabulosos Cadillacs,” she added.

The band — headed by singer Gabriel Fernández Capello, better known as Vicentico, bassist Flavio Cianciarulo and saxophonist Sergio Rotman — took over the second largest public square in the world (behind Tiananmen Square in Peking) with their blend of rock, ska, reggae and punk.

From early in the morning on Saturday, people from different parts of the city, and the country, lined up at el Zócalo in an effort to get access to the front rows of the stage. By the time the show started in the evening, the crowd was so large and tight, that some opted to move to the back to breath better.

The now-historic performance, which lasted around 90 minutes, is part of the group’s El León del Ritmo tour, which celebrates 30 years of one of its most celebrated albums, 1992’s El León, and three decades since the release of their fabled single “Matador.”

The fact that Cadillacs have been around for so long, and that they perform rock en español – a genre many say is fading — makes their accomplishment even more impressive. “They called them old, they made fun of them, and they answered with 300,000 people,” tweeted one fan.

“What happiness! How enormous and indescribable to be playing for all you! Thank you, eternal thanks. We receive this with our hearts,” said a visibly moved Vicentico to an adoring audience that sang to every song in their repertoire.

Following their performance at Coachella in April, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs will take their El León del Ritmo Tour to different countries, including Mexico, the Viña del Mar Festival in Chile, Spain and the U.S.

Bad Bunny to Become Coachella’s First-Ever Latin Headlining Act

Bad Bunny is set to make history yet again…

The 2023 Coachella Music and Arts Festival lineup has been announced, with the 28-year-old Puerto Rican superstar revealed as one of the headlining acts.

In doing so, Bad Bunny – the ultra-hot reggaeton superstar who had the highest-grossing tour of 2022 in North America and internationally – becomes the first Latin act to ever headline the festival.

Coachella is set to take place in Indio, Calif., on two consecutive weekends, from April 14-16 and then again from April 21-23.

Bad Bunny will play Friday on April 14 and 21.

But Bad Bunny isn’t the only Latinx act set to perform…

Becky G will return to Coachella to perform her own set after being Karol G’s special guest last year, where they sang their anthem “MAMIII” in front of a roaring crowd.

Spanish star Rosalía will take the stage on Saturday, April 15 and Saturday, April 22.

Others set to perform include the iconic Argentine rock band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs are confirmed, as well as emerging artists DannyLux and Conexión Divina as the face of a new generation of Mexican music. Kali Uchis and Eladio Carrión are also set to perform.

This year’s lineup doesn’t compare to the number of Latin artists featured last year, which was more than 20 representing a wide-ranging and robust slate of Spanish-language artists. Then, Coachella had doubled the Latin acts on its 2022 roster from 2020, the most ever featured at an edition of the event.

J Balvin to Co-Headline New ‘Viva! L.A. Music Festival’ This Summer

J Balvin is ready to Viva Los Angeles…

The 36-year-old Colombian reggaetonero will co-headline Viva! L.A., a new, one-day festival set to take place at L.A.’s Dodger Stadium on June 25.

The new festival is being held to celebrate the 10^th anniversary of Viva! Pomona, an annual festival launched 10 years ago.

Produced by Goldenvoice, the Viva! L.A. Music Festival will also be headlined by Daddy Yankee, Becky G and Kali Uchis.

The multi-genre fest will also feature performances by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Lenin Ramirez, Carin Leon, Tainy, Carla Morrison, Ivy Queen, Cuco, Los Dos Carnales, The Marías, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Chicano Batman, Ed Maverick, Cazzu, La Sonora Dinamita, Lido Piemienta, Eslabon Armado, among many others.

Additionally, the festival will donate $1 of every ticket sold to the Los Angeles-based nonprofit No Us Without You LA, which is committed to feeding L.A.’s undocumented immigrant communities.

Launched in the pandemic, the volunteer-run organization now provides support to “hundreds of food insecure hospitality, day laborers, street vendors and mariachi families.”

Viva! was originally created a decade ago by Rene Contreras who wanted to bring resources to his hometown in Southern California via backyard shows and gigs at local spots. “Viva! goes beyond just a music festival, it has a strong mission of building community and representation, which has led to its cult following that started in L.A. and has since gone global,” according to a press release. “The fest celebrates those often overshadowed immigrants, youth of color, the underserved, the working class in the suburbs, various marginalized communities and artists that have long been pushed out of the larger anglo music arena.”

The Viva! Pomona shows will still continue under the Viva! umbrella.

Los Fabulosos Cadillacs to Perform at Next Year’s Chicago-Based Ruido Fest

Los Fabulosos Cadillacs are ready to make some ruido…

After a year away, Chicago’s Ruido Fest is set to return in August with a star-studded lineup that includes the Argentine ska band, Café Tacvba and Panteón Rococó as headliners.

Marking the return of one of Latin music’s biggest festivals to the Midwest since the COVID-19 pandemic, the alt-rock fest is set to take place on August 20-22 at Union Park. Other artists set to perform throughout the three-day event include Moenia, Los Amigos Invisibles, La Doña, Lido Pimienta, Mexican Institute of Sound and Little Jesus, among others.

The announcement arrives as cities across the country are beginning to loosen COVID restrictions, including Chicago, which is currently in its “bridge phase” of its reopening plan.

Max Wagner, co-founder of Ruido and owner of event production company Metronome, tells Billboard that production will follow state and city guidelines.

“The hope is that by late August things are somewhat back to normal,” Wagner says. “We will try to keep everyone safe. There will be more people cleaning and all of our staff will be required to have masks across the grounds. With fans attending, we’ll follow CDC guidelines and whatever they’re saying at the time of the festival in terms of mask or no masks outdoors.”

Launched in 2015, Ruido Fest has featured an array of Latin artists, including Enanitos Verdes, Hombres G, Zoé, Molotov, Vanessa Zamora, Bomba Estéreo, Intocable, El Tri, Los Tigres del Norte and Maldita Vecindad.

Venegas to Perfom at Chicago’s Ruido Fest

Julieta Venegas is ready to make some ruido in the Windy City…

The 46-year-old Mexican American singer will take the stage at Chicago’s 2017 Ruido Fest.

Venegas, a Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning singer, joins a lineup that includes Cultura Profética and Molotov.

Adding a norteño twist to the alt-rock set of performers is legendary band Intocable, who will perform alongside Alejandro Marcovich, former Caifanes guitarist.

Other bands set to perform include Bomba Estéreo, Fobia, Duncan Dhu, Titan, Mon Laferte, Javiera Mena, Alex Anwandter, Adan Jodorowsky and Buscabulla. More artists will be announced in the upcoming months.

The third annual Ruido Fest will take place on July 7-9 at Addams/Medill Park with tickets for the three-day fest on sale now.

“We are very appreciative of the support of the local and international community that have supported,” Ruido Fest founder Max Wagner said in a statement.

“We always are looking to reward the faith that the fans show in us by striving to bring in the best talent, and provide opportunities for artists that don’t receive a lot of chances to perform in this country. Our goal this year, and every year, is to provide the best experience and best value possible for our loyal fans.”

Last year’s performers included Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Panteon Rococó, Carla Morrison, Natalia Lafourcade, Aterciopelados and Maldita Vecindad.

Jesse & Joy to Perform at This Year’s Latin Grammys

Latin Grammy darlings Jesse & Joy have a special date in Las Vegas…

The Mexican duo, comprised of Jesse Huerta and his sister Joy Huerta, will take the stage at this year’s Latin Grammys.

Jesse & Joy, who received nominations in all three major categories, join a roster of performers that includes Fonseca, Mon Laferte, Manuel Medrano, Gente de Zona, Alexis y Fido, Joss Favela and Wisin.

To kick off the awards ceremony, Latin Grammy and Grammy-winning artist Juanes will team up with the cast of Cirque Du Soleil‘s Mystere and Pablo López for a special performance.

Other Latin superstars set to perform are J Balvin, Banda Los Recoditos, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Farruko featuring Ky-Mani Marley, Laura Pausini, Prince Royce ft. Gerardo Ortiz, Diego Torres ft. Rachel Platten, Carlos Vives and Yandel.

This year’s Latin Grammys, will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on November 17.

The show, to be hosted by Roselyn Sánchez and Sebastian Rulli, will air live on Univision at 8 p.m. ET, with a red carpet special, Noche de Estrellas, airing one hour before the awards show.

De La Tierra Releases New Single “Puro”

De La Tierra is back with new music…

The Latin American heavy metal supergroup has released “Puro,” the first single from its upcoming sophomore album.

De La Tierra, whose stated mission is to “elevate the roots of the Latin American continent where they were born,” will release their second album, II, on November 18 through Sony Music Latin.

The all-star band made up of Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser, Andrés Giménez of Argentina’s A.N.I.M.A.L., Los Fabulosos Cadillacs bassist Sr. Flavio and drummer Alex Gonzalez of Maná released their debut in 2014 and followed up with a slate of touring that included opening for Metallica on South American dates and playing Rock in Rio and other major festivals.

“This song talks about how life can take us in different directions, good or bad,” says Giménez of the gristly track. “Our soul is unbreakable. It’s up to us to understand if it’s time to be born, to grow, or to die. The payoff is always there. Nothing is easy, but nothing is impossible as long as you keep the pure power inside your heart.”

Sariñana to Perform at This Year’s Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC)

Ximena Sariñana is making alternative plans for the summer…

The 29-year-old Mexican singer-songwriter is set to perform at this year’s Latin Alternative Music Conference.

Taking place at the Central Park Summerstage and St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx, the event will also feature a performance by Vicentico, best known as the lead singer of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.

He’ll headline a Saturday show with his own band on July 11, when Sariñana and critics’ favorites No Te Va Gustar, Uruguay’s most popular rock band, will also perform.

Mexican Institute of Sound’s Camilo Lara and DJ/producer Toy Selectah, performing together as Compass, will be featured at Summerstage on July 8. They’ll be joined by Colombian electro-cumbia outfit Systema Solar and the bilingual electronic music artist known as Helado Negro.

At a July 7 show at St. Mary’s, DJ Afro — aka Los Amigos Invisibles’ Jose Luis Pardo — shares the bill with “Our Latin Thing,” a tribute to the music of salsa founders the Fania Allstars and their ’70s scene by 17 singers and musicians.

Now in its 16th year, the LAMC is an annual date for lovers of diverse Latin sounds and tastemakers of all stripes. This year’s event will include several days of industry panels and presentations at the Affinia Manhattan Hotel, and showcases around the New York City area that can be attended by the public.

De La Tierra to Launch First U.S. Tour

Alex González and his De La Tierra are preparing to dirty up their schedules with a U.S. tour.

De La Tierra, the heavy metal super group formed by members of Sepultura, Maná, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and A.N.I.M.A.L., will start their first U.S. tour on August 31 in Los Angeles.

“We all come from very important bands who have made their mark in rock in Latin America,” says González, known throughout the Spanish-speaking world as a member of top-selling Latin rock band Maná. Just before the release of De La Tierra’s debut album in late 2013, he described the band as, “A very special union of four good friends.”

Andreas Kisser, whose Brazilian heavy metal band Sepultura has sold 2.2 million albums in the United States, brings heavy metal cred to the project. “The whole idea of doing a heavy band in Spanish alone was amazing for me,” Kisser said.

Kisser, González and collaborators Sr. Flavio from The Fabulosos Cadillacs and Andrés Giménez of A.N.I.M.A.L. will begin De La Tierra’s U.S. tour at the Fonda Theatre in L.A. They will also play Houston, New York, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta and San Francisco.

De La Tierra performed at Mexico City’s 2013 Vive Latino Festival, and toured throughout Latin America over the past year.
