Santos Sprints to a Silver at the London Games

London Olympics 2012

Talk about Electric Youth Luguelín Santos has raced his way to the medal podium at the 2012 Olympic Games.

The 18-year-old Dominican sprinter claimed the silver medal on Monday in the men’s 400 meter race, giving his country its second medal of the day after Félix Sánchez won a gold at the track earlier in the day.

Santos finished half a second behind another teenager competing in his first Olympics, 19-year-old Kirani James of Grenada. James coasted to victory in a time of 43.94 seconds.

Santos—who won a gold medal in the 400 meter at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics and was the third fastest man this year in the 400 meter field-—was billed as James’s main rival in the final, but just couldn’t muster enough power to pull ahead.

Culson Earns Puerto Rico’s First-Ever Non-Boxing Olympic Medal

London Olympics 2012

Despite a disappointing performance, Javier Culson should still receive a hero’s welcome when he returns home after the 2012 Olympic Games.

Javier Culson

The 28-year-old Puerto Rican track star, the pre-Olympics favorite to take home the gold in the 400m hurdles at the London Games, had to settle for bronze following Félix Sánchez’s surprising victory in the final to claim his second Olympic gold in that event.

“I’m not pleased with it at all,” said Culson, the world No. 1 all year who hadn’t lost outdoors this summer before these Olympics. “I lost my rhythm towards the end of the race and I couldn’t get it back. I send my apologies to the people back home, but at least I made it to the final.”

Javier Culson

But Culson can take solace in knowing he claimed Puerto Rico’s first Olympic medal in 16 years. And his bronze is the first Olympic medal Puerto Rico has ever won outside of the boxing ring.

Sanchez Returns to (Golden) Form at the London Games

London Olympics 2012

“Age is nothing but a number” is more than a saying for Félix Sánchez… It’s a reality, following his gold medal performance at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Two weeks before his 35th birthday, the Dominican American track veteran—considered years past his prime—surprised many held off Michael Tinsley of the United States and pre-Olympics favorite Javier Culson of Puerto Rico to win the 400m hurdles final at the London Games. He’s now the oldest man to win the 400m hurdles Olympic Gold.

Félix Sánchez

Sánchez, the 400m hurdles gold medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, repeated American Angelo Taylor‘s feat of grabbing a second Olympic gold eight years after his first. Taylor, the defending Olympic champion in the event, ended in fifth place.

Sánchez dedicated his win to his late grandmother Lilian, who passed away the morning of the first race in defense of his title at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Félix Sánchez

Grief-stricken, Sánchez ran his preliminary race in Beijing that night in a disappointing 51.10 seconds, more than three seconds off his personal best and too slow for him to advance to the semifinals.

“It was a very difficult day for me,” he told reporters afterward. “My heart was anywhere but on the track.”

Félix Sánchez

Four years later, Sánchez’s mind was back on his grandmother. He ran with a photo of the two of them pinned beneath his race bib and “Abuela”  written on his yellow spikes.

And after those shoes carried him to victory , giving the Dominican Republic its first medal at the London Games, Sánchez pulled out that picture, placed it down on the track, knelt and tenderly kissed the image of the woman who raised him.

Félix Sánchez

“”I’ve been really emotional all week, thinking about her,” said Sánchez. “I just wanted to make her proud… The day she died in Beijing it broke my heart. That’s why I ran with the picture close to my heart.”

Sánchez’’s victory will undoubtedly rank as one of the most unlikely gold medal-winning efforts of this week’s track and field competition. After all, he’d won two world championships, an Olympic gold medal and 43 races in a row from 2001 to 2004, but he hadn’t been in his best form recently.

Félix Sánchez

But Sánchez showed he was in it to win it in the semifinals when he ran the fastest time in any of the heats. And he followed that up with that remarkable race in the final, staving off a hard-charging Tinsley over the final two hurdles to capture gold.

During the medal ceremony, Sanchez couldn’t contain his emotion on the medal stand, bawling uncontrollably as his country’s national anthem played and the Dominican Republic flag was raised.

López Defends His Greco-Roman Wrestling Title at the London Games

London Olympics 2012

It’s a tale of redemption for Mijaín López at the 2012 Olympic Games…

The 29-year-old Cuban wrestler took down Heiki Nabi of Estonia 2-0, 1-0 on Monday to claim his second consecutive Olympic gold medal in the men’s Greco-Roman wrestling 120 kg category at the London Games.

Mijaín López

But it was López’s semifinal against Riza Kayaalp of Turkey that proved to be the most highly anticipated match of the day.

The wrestling world was left in shock and disbelief when Kayaalp beat the seemingly unbeatable Lopez at the 2011 World Championships. López had won world titles in 2005 and 2007, claimed the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and then went on to the next two world championships.

Mijaín López

But Lopez restored order to the heavyweight division he’s ruled for years by dropping Kayaalp in that semifinal match. He scored a couple of late points while on offense to win the first period. That set the tone heading into the second period, which also went to the “par terre” tiebreaker position. This time López  stayed on the bottom, keeping Kayaalp from scoring on him. Kayaalp flailed wildly as he attempted to pick López off the mat, but nothing worked.

Following that redemptive win over Kayaalp, López believed no one else could touch him… And that proved to be the case when he defeated Nabi in the final in similar fashion to take home the gold.

Mijaín López

“I think it was a really good fight,” said López, whose performance on Monday solidified his place as one of the great Greco-Roman heavyweights of all time.

With the victory, López becomes the third wrestler to win multiple gold medals at 120 kilograms, joining Russian legend Alexandre Karelin and Alexander Koltschinkski of the former Soviet Union.

Asked if he’d be back for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, López was noncommittal.

“I mean I am [almost] 30 already. I have three Olympics behind me. It is going to be a little bit more difficult, but life goes on,” said López.

Silva Pole-Vaults to a Silver at the London Games…

London Olympics 2012

She may not be the “queen of the pole vault” at the 2012 Olympic Games… But Yarisley Silva came thisclose to earning that title at the London Games.

Competing in her second Olympics, the 25-year-old Cuban pole vaulter cleared 4.75 meters in front of an Olympic Stadium crowd of 80,000 on her second attempt to match the successful attempt by Jenn Suhr of the United States.

Yarisley Silva

Despite ending tied at the top of the leader board, Silva had to settle for the silver medal because Suhr successfully cleared the mark in her first attempt.

But Silva’s surprise silver is a vast improvement from her previous performance at the 2008 Olumpic Games, where she ended in 27th place.
Yarisley Silva
World record holder Yelena Isinbaeva of Russia, who had won the gold at the last two Olympics, had to settle for the bronze this time around, since she could not go over 4.70 meters.

Nabarrete Zanetti Wins Brazil’s First-Ever Gymnastics Medal at the London Games

London Olympics 2012

Call him the new “lord of the rings.” Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti has taken down the defending champion at the 2012 Olympic Games, earning his place in the annals of Brazil’s sports history…

The 22-year-old Brazilian gymnast edged out a victory over China’s Chen Yibing to claim the gold medal on Monday in the men’s rings final at the London Games.

Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti

Nabarrete Zanetti and the rest of this finalists faced the difficult task of trying to unseat Chen, the 2008 Olympic Games champion in this event, after he kicked off the competition with a score of 15.800.

No one could top the four-time world champ’s impressive score until Nabarrete Zanetti’s 15.900 at the end of the competition.

Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti

Nabarrete Zanetti had qualified fourth for the men’s rings final with the highest execution score, but he had the lowest marks in difficulty among the eight gymnasts.

But, he matched Chen’s difficulty score on Monday at 6.800 and was one of three gymnasts to score at least a nine in execution.

“I’m very happy, I was the last gymnast to compete and I stayed calm and took my moment,” said Nabarrete Zanetti.

Nabarrete Zanetti, who came in second to Chen at the 2011 World Championships, claimed Brazil’s first-ever Olympic gymnastics medal.

Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti

“This medal isn’t just for me but for all the athletes and all the gymnasts in Brazil,” Nabarrete Zanetti told reporters after he struggled to hold back the tears during the victory ceremony.

Nabarrete Zanetti’s performance knocked Italian Matteo Morandi into the bronze position with a score of 15.733.

Ibargüen Gives Colombia Its First Olympic Track Medal in 20 Years

London Olympics 2012

Talk about saving the best for last…

Caterine Ibargüen claimed the silver medal in the women’s triple jump at the 2012 Olympic Games with a 14.80 meter jump on her last attempt in the finals on Sunday at the London Games.

Caterine Ibargüen

The 28-year-old Colombian track star—who won the bronze at last year’s world championships in Daegu, South Korea—had maintained the second place position most of the night before pre-Olympics favorite Olha Saladuha of Ukraine pushed past her on her last jump of 14.79 meters.

Not to be outdone, Ibargüen went one centimeter better than Saladuha in her last attempt to reclaim second place and push Saladuha into the bronze medal position.

Caterine Ibargüen
Kazakhstan’s Olga Rypakova—who had claimed the silver at last year’s world championships—claimed the gold with a leap of 14.98 meters.

Ibarguen— who began her athletic career 12 years ago and convinced her paternal grandmother and legal guardian to take her to Medellin at age 14 to train, helped give Colombia its first medal in track & field in 20 years. By taking home the silver, she improved on Ximena Restrepo’s bronze medal performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Sánchez Claims Mexico’s Third Diving Medal at the London Games

London Olympics 2012

The third time’s the charm for Laura Sánchez Soto

Competing in her third consecutive Olympics, the 26-year-old Mexican diver earned the bronze in the women’s diving 3m springboard final on Sunday at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Laura Sanchez

In what turned out to be a close battle for the bronze, Sánchez proved to be thismuch better than Italy’s Tania Cagnotto.

Heading into their final dive, the Italian diver—competing in her fourth Olympics—looked like the odds on favorite to take third place. But Sanchez won over the judges with an exceptional forward 2 1/2 somersault with one twist pike to finish a mere .20 points ahead of Cagnotto.

China’s Wu Minxia won the gold medal, while her countrywoman He Zi won the silver. It was Wu’s record-tying sixth Olympic diving medal.

Meanwhile, Sanchez’s third place finish helped give Mexico its third diving medal at the London Games following silver-earning performances by synchronized diver Paola Espinosa and Alejandra Orozco and German Sanchez and Iván García.

del Potro Earns His First-Ever Olympic Medal at the London Games

London Olympics 2012

Don’t cry for Juan Martin del Potro Argentina…

Following a heartbreaking, hard-fought loss to world No. 1 Roger Federer in the semifinals, del Potro has claimed his first-ever Olympic medal.

Juan Martin del Potro

Del Potro, the world’s No. 9 ranked player, pulled out all the stops to defeat world. No. 2 Novak Djokovic of Serbia to win the bronze in men’s tennis on Sunday at the 2012 Olympic Games.

He needed less than two hours to dispatch Djokovic, winning the match 7-5, 6-4 to give his country its first medal at the London Games. Djokovic was the defending singles bronze medalist from the 2008 Beijing Games.

It was a far cry from the long hours del Potro put in on the grass courts at Wimbledon in his semifinal defeat on Friday. The match, a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 19-17 loss to Federer, lasted 4 hours, 26 minutes—the longest three-set men’s match of the Open era.

Scheidt Earns Fifth Consecutive Olympic Medal at London Games

London Olympics 2012

There’s no denying Robert Scheidt is Brazil’s current all-star captain of the sea…

Robert Scheidt

The 39-year-old renowned sailor and his teammate Bruno Prada claimed the bronze medal on Sunday in the men’s sailing Star competition at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Scheidt’s medal-winning performance at the London Games makes him the first Brazilian athlete to win a medal in five consecutive Olympics. And he’s now tied with renowned sailor Torben Grael as the Brazilian with the most Olympic medals.

Robert Scheidt & Bruco Prada

Scheidt has won two gold, two silver and now a bronze since the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen of Sweden sailed a perfect medal race in ideal sailing conditions off the south coast of England to pull off an upset and win the gold. The defending Olympic champions Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson of Great Britain had to settle for the silver.

Robert Scheidt & Bruco Prada

Schiedt and Prada were hoping to be the team to upset the British duo, after beating the British duo at the 2012 Zhik Star World Championship in Hyeres, France, giving the Brazilians their third world title. They’d previously won the worlds in 2007 and 2011.
