James Rodríguez Signs with Liga MX’s Leon Club

James Rodríguez is heading to Liga MX. 

The 33-year-old Colombian professional footballer and Colombia  has signed with Liga MX‘s León, the Mexican club has announced.

James Rodríguez Recently a free agent after terminating his contract with Rayo Vallecano — who initially signed James in August — he will now join a León side that kicks off their 2025 Clausura run on January 18. 

“Rayo Vallecano de Madrid and Club Leon of Mexico have reached an agreement for the transfer of James Rodriguez,” the Spanish club said in a statement.

They did not give any details of the deal.

“From the club, we wish James the best of luck in his new stage,” the club added.

Eight-times Mexican champions León posted several images of Rodriguez on their social media accounts, but also did not give any details of the deal.

In June, León will then take part in the Club World Cup, beginning with group stage matches against Chelsea, Esperance de Tunis and Flamengo.

Rodriguez’s move to Mexico marks his sixth team since 2021 after playing for Rayo Vallecano, São Paulo, Olympiacos, Al-Rayyan, and Everton in recent years.

Earlier in his career, the Golden Boot winner at the 2014 World Cup was noted for high-profile runs through the likes of European giants such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The midfielder has also played for Envigado, Banfield, Porto, and Monaco.

With Colombia, Rodriguez has amassed 29 goals across 112 caps, including a successful run at last summer’s Copa América where his team lost to Argentina in the final.

 

Andrés Guardado Signs with Liga MX’s León

Andrés Guardado is making his triumphant return to Mexico.

The 37-year-old Mexican professional footballer, a midfielder who retired from the national team in 2023 after a record-breaking 179 appearances for Mexico, has been signed by Liga MX’s León side.

Andrés GuardadoThe former Mexico captain and five-time World Cup participant is returning to Liga MX after last playing for boyhood club Atlas in 2007. 

After leaving Atlas, Guardado had a lengthy 17-year run in European club soccer that took him through Deportivo La Coruña, Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen, PSV Eindhoven, and most recently, Real Betis.

Guardado stands as the Mexican with the most seasons in European soccer and as the all-time non-domestic leader in appearances (218) with Real Betis.

“The Green and White Captain has been key in the sporting growth in recent years. With him, the team has qualified for European competitions four times and also won the Copa del Rey in 2022,” Real Betis said in a statement.

“The Club would like to effusively thank Guardado for his services and wish him all the best in the future.”

Under the guidance of new manager Jorge Bava, León kicked off the 2024 Clausura season on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss at home to Tigres.

Earlier in December, the 2023 Concacaf Champions League winners were knocked out in their debut match at the Club World Cup after a 1-0 loss to Urawa Red Diamonds.

Billboard and W Hotels are gearing up for the third and final concert in this year’s Next Up: New Artists, New Music series, featuring intimate performances with rising musicians.

Gallardo, an R&B/pop powerhouse and The Voice Chile finalist, will entertain guests of the W Hotel in Santiago, Chile on November 8.

Since finishing as runner-up of The Voice Chile‘s inaugural season in 2015, Galladaro has built a strong following through her emotive pop that combines a range of influences from Amy Winehouse‘s soulful swagger to Violeta Parra‘s Chilean folk. This year, she has released two new songs: “Un Poco Más De Frío” and “Abrázame.”

Former Soccer Star Borgetti to Become Marathon Man?

He’s Mexico’s all-time leading scorer in international fútbol… But Jared Borgetti could soon be earning acclaim in another sport.

The 39-year-old Mexican soccer star, who retired from the sport in December 2010, is thinking about competing in marathons.

“It’s tough to run 42 kilometers and 195 meters (26.2 miles), but accessible for a high performance athlete like me,” Borgetti, known as El Zorro del Desierto, told Efe n Torreon, where he served as grand marshal of Sunday’s marathon. “If I decide to do it, I will need good physical preparation and serious mental training.”

Borgetti, who will turn 40 in August, retired from professional soccer with a lifetime tally of 258 goals, including 46 with the Mexican national squad.

“I just ran a 12.5 kilometer (7.7 mile) race to accompany my wife and I wanted to throw in the towel after that. I don’t know how these guys endure so much,” he said of the 4,500 runners in the Torreon marathon.

During his career, the striker played for Mexico’s Atlas, Santos Laguna, Dorados, Pachuca, Cruz Azul, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Puebla, Morelia and León, as well as England’s Bolton Wanderers and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad.
