Spotify Developing Original Audio Programming for the U.S. Latino Podcast Audience

Spotify is investing in Latinx voices…

The Swedish digital music service has created a team to develop original audio programming for the growing U.S. Latino podcast audience.

Spotify

Spotify, which over the last two years has made a sizeable investment into non-music audio formats like podcasting, will work with Latinx creators to produce both English- and Spanish-language programming.

Javier Piñol, who for the last two years has served as head of studios for Spotify in Latin America, will lead the group.

“As we continue to grow we want to make sure we’re developing content that is relevant to our audiences. Our mission is to bring the U.S. Latinx consumer the streaming access they want and need, all in one place,” said Courtney Holt, global head of studios and video for Spotify.

Latinos represent 18 percent of the U.S. population, or more than 60 million people, and they are listening to podcasts more than ever before. A quarter of Latinos age 18 and up in the U.S. have listened to a podcast in the last month, according to an Edison Research report published June 30. The report also found that the majority of Latinos started listening to podcasts within the last year.

As a global platform, Spotify has invested in podcasts for Latin American markets, including Fausto and Se Regalan Dudas in Mexico and Café da Manhã in Brazil. Earlier this year, reggaeton artist J Balvinreleased the original podcast Made in Medellín, promoting the six-episode series during his Super Bowl halftime performance alongside Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

“We have seen our podcast content consumption grow in Latin America, and now, we’re focusing on giving the U.S. Latin market well deserved attention as the best destination to consume relevant Latin podcasts,” added Holt. Spotify is already in business with digital creator and singer Lele Pons, who is developing a podcast for its platform.

Spotify reaches 286 million monthly users in 79 countries. The company has 130 million subscribers to its ad-free service. In addition to expanding its podcast programing in the U.S., the company is also beginning to bring local versions of its originals to other markets, per a Reuters report. It is starting with scripted series Sandra, which will get adaptations in countries including France and Mexico.

Lele Pons Opens Up About Her Struggle with OCD & More in New YouTube Series, “The Secret Life of Lele Pons”

Lele Pons is getting up close and personal with her more than 40 million social media followers.

The 23-year-old Venezuelan internet celebrity, YouTuber, actress, singer, model and host has released her new YouTube series The Secret Life of Lele Pons, where she reveals her lifelong struggle with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and other mental health conditions.

Lele-Pons

“It’s very personal and it took a while for me to actually to be super open because at first I was embarrassed about it,” Pons tells Billboard. “But over the time, I’ve learned to be strong.”

Launched in partnership with YouTube in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the five-part series documents Pons’ journey from childhood to present day, her therapy sessions, and how living with OCD has impacted her career as an influencer and musician.

“I’m kind of nervous about it, you know,” says Pons of launching the show. “It’s very personal and it took a while for me to actually to be super open because at first I was embarrassed about it. But over the time, I’ve learned to be strong. Now, I’m ready to let people in my life. This is my little secret and I’m basically telling them, ‘Here’s my secret, now take care of it.’ It’s the first time I show the world my vulnerable side. I owe it to my fans because they’ve been vulnerable with me.”

The Secret Life of Lele Pons airs a new episode every Tuesday on her YouTube channel.

Lele Pons Appears in YouTube’s 2018 YouTube Rewind Clip

Lele Pons is rewinding through the past year…

The 22-year-old Venezuelan internet personality, actress, singer, dancer and host of La Voz… México appears in YouTube’s “YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind.

Lele Pons

The clip, jam-packed with references to this year’s music, features many of YouTube’s popular creators and recaps the year’s content, trends and tunes.

The YouTube Rewind series first hit the internet in 2010..

The eight-minute-plus video opens with Will Smith (who made his YouTube channel debut earlier this year) against a mountainous landscape, announcing, “It’s rewind time.” He continues, “If I control rewind, I would want Fortnite and Marques Brownlee.” Snapping his fingers, a dreamlike YouTuber-filled compilation begins.

“Is this what you wanted?” asks Brownlee from a flying Fortnite-esque bus full of YouTubers ready to pick out their own favorite moments as Cardi B’s “I Like It” plays in the background.

The scene eventually swaps to one in which the content creators crowd around a campfire together. “Apparently we control rewind this year. Y’all, we can do whatever we want,” confirms Liza Koshy. “What do we do?”

K-pop!” pipe up the Merrell Twins and Casey Neistat as a dancing montage backed by BTS’ “Idol” plays in the background.

Marshmello soon makes a brief appearance (as does his collaboration with Bastille, “Happier“).

The next music moment comes when the animated TheOdd1sOut suggests they accept Drake’s “In My Feelings” Challenge, the moving-car dance craze inspired by the song earlier this year.

YouTubers including Pons, Anwar Jibawi and Rudy Mancuso later take on a catwalk wearing oversized blocky bodysuits meant to resemble the ones Kanye West and Lil Pump sported in the “I Love It” music video; Panic! at the Disco’s “High Hopes” backs them up.

The social-media-famous “Baby Shark” song by Pinkfong also gets a nod, accompanied by some colorfully costumed kid show characters.

This year’s video has, notably, at time of press, been disliked more than 2.2 million times — over twice as many times as it has been liked — with viewers pointing out that some of YouTube’s biggest stars, including PewDiePie (who boasts over 74 million subscribers), are absent. Despite this, the recap has already received 33 million views.

Greeicy Named one of Vevo DSCVR’s 2019 Artists To Watch

Greeicy is livin’ laVEVO loca…

The 26-year-old Colombian singer and actress has been named one of Vevo DSCVR’s 2019 Artists To Watch, along with 20-year-old half-Colombian American singer-songwriter Matt Hunter.

Greeicy

Vevo DSCVR choices for 2019 focus on the meteoric rise of Latin Pop on mainstream airwaves in the United States and abroad.

Greeicy may be a household name in her native Colombia, but it’s time for the rest of the world to catch up. The singer got her start on the children’s talent show Factor Xs, and despite not winning the competition, Greeicy converted the opportunity into a successful acting career. Though she remained engaged in the music industry between booking roles, Greeicy appears to have chosen 2018 to return full-time with an outpouring of new music, including a single with Brazilian superstar Anitta.

“Greeicy has been perfecting her craft working across music and film and we’ve definitely taken notice,” Vevo director of music and talent David McTiernan says. “Already a superstar in her home country of Colombia, she is truly on the verge of becoming a global superstar.”

Matt Hunter is a young singer whose voice may sound eerily familiar to listeners of a certain age. Originally the voice of the titular character on the popular children’s program Go, Diego, Go!, Hunter developed his vocal abilities into a full-fledged singing career and built a following performing covers and original songs in Spanish on YouTube. With a string of singles rolled out on a consistent basis from as far back as 2012, Hunter continues to push himself into increasingly mature territory. On his latest single “Dicen” with singer Lele Pons, Hunter proves himself equally prepared for balladry and pop.

In a prepared statement, McTiernan tells Billboard, “We expect big things in 2019 from Matt Hunter — he’s definitely laid the groundwork over the last couple years, but the music he’s making now sounds like it could propel him to become one of the most exciting young voices in Latin Pop.”

The single was composed by Aitana alongside “Despacito” hitmakers Mauricio Rengifo and Andres Torres.

The music video, directed by Anwar Jibawi and produced by Shots Studios, was filmed in Los Angeles and features both artists in a celebration of Spanish-language pop music for fans around the world.

It also showcases an explosive combination between two multi-talented young women.

Lele Pons Makes Her First Billboard Hot Latin Songs Top 20 Appearance with “Celoso”

Lele Pons has special first on the music charts…

The 22-year-old Venezuelan-American singer, internet personality, actress, dancer and host of La Voz México has made her first Billboard Hot Latin Songs Top 20 appearance as “Celoso,” her second chart entry on any Billboard chart, debuts at No. 11 on the chart dated September 1, mainly on the strength of streams and digital sales.

Lele Pons

The social media star’s song logs a little less than 6 million U.S. streams in the week ending August 23, according to Nielsen Music. Likewise, it collects 2,000 in digital download sales.

Pons also notches her first top 10 on Latin Streaming Songs and Latin Digital Song Sales, debuting at No. 8 and No. 4, respectively.

“Celoso” becomes Pons’ highest debut and second of the year, after “Dicen,” her collaboration with Matt Hunter, debuted at No. 29.
