Bobby Cannavale to Receive Artist of Distinction Award at Newport Beach Film Festival

Bobby Cannavale has earned a special distinction

The 54-year-old half-Cuban American Emmy-winning actor will be among the honorees at this year’s Newport Beach Film Festival, which runs October 17-24.

Bobby CannavaleCannavale will be recognized with the Artist of Distinction Award during the festival’s awards brunch on October 20.

Cannavel’s recent credits include Ezra, Old Dads and Under the Boardwalk.

Margaret Qualley, meantime, will receive the Spotlight Award, while Kiernan Shipka will receive the Artist of Distinction Award.

Previously announced honorees include Nicolas Cage, Joan Chen, Colman Domingo, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Sheryl Lee Ralph, George MacKay, Diane Warren and June Squibb.

The festival will also be celebrating those behind the camera with the just-announced Master of the Frame panel with leading industry cinematographers on October 19. Current participants include Alice Brooks (“Wicked”) and Lawrence Sher (“Joker: Folie à Deux.”)

The luxury lifestyle film festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with a wide selection of international films including buzzy titles like Blitz, Nightbitch and The Piano Lesson.

First Trailer Released for “Twisters,” Starring Antony Ramos

Antony Ramos is getting things twisted

The first trailer for Universal‘s Twisters, starring the 32-year-old Puerto Rican actor/singer, has been released.

Twisters, Antony RamosGlen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Ramos star in the new chapter to the 1996 box office hit. Lee Isaac Chung directs the film from a script by Mark L. Smith. The film is co-financed by Warner Bros.

The supporting cast includes Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Maura Tierney and Katy O’Brian.

Starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, the original Twister was a massive hit in 1996, scoring almost $500M at the worldwide box office, due in no small part to the film’s groundbreaking special effects.

The film followed a pair of storm chasers who risk their lives in an attempt to test an experimental weather alert system. The film was helmed by Speed director Jan De Bont and executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by author Michael Crichton.

Plot details have been kept under wraps on the big-budget sequel, which began filming around Oklahoma City in May 2023. Filming was suspended in July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike but production resumed in November 2023, wrapping the following month.

The film is scheduled to be released in the U.S. by Universal and internationally by Warner Bros in July 2024.

HBO Max has released the official trailer for Season 3 of its critically acclaimed comedy series The Other Two, featuring the 36-year-old Puerto Rican actor’s return in a lovable role.

The 10-episode third season debuts with two episodes on Thursday, May 4 on HBO Max.

In Season 3, after comparing themselves for years to their much-younger pop star brother, ChaseDreams (Case Walker), who is now an adult, and their talk show host mother (Molly Shannon), who’s now more powerful than she could have ever imagined, Brooke and Cary (Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver) are finally standing on their own two feet – fully “successful” in their own right! And yet, they somehow find themselves comparing themselves to new people once again?

In addition to Tarver, Yorke, Shannon, Walker and Segarra, who portrays Lance Arroyo, The Other Two also stars Ken Marino (Streeter) and Wanda Sykes (Shuli) and Brandon Scott Jones (Curtis).

Gerardo Celasco to Star in ABC’s Drama Pilot “National Parks”

The 38-year-old Salvadoran-American actor has landed a lead role opposite Billy Campbell and Angel Parker in National Parks, ABC’s drama pilot co-written and executive produced by Yellowstone star Kevin Costner.

The project hails from Costner’s Territory Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Television and A+E Studios.

 

Co-written by Costner, Aaron Helbing and Jon Baird and to be directed by Anthony HemingwayNational Parks follows a small group of elite national parks service agents as they solve crimes while protecting the parks — which, while being known for their sweeping, beautiful landscapes, also attract a vast array of criminal activity.

Celasco will play Lincoln Kane, a fearless ISB Special Agent who is haunted by his past and carries the world on his shoulders. Lincoln’s commitment is never in question as he finds his own way to go above and beyond the call.

Celasco most recently wrapped production on the Swimming with Sharks drama series reboot, starring opposite Diane Kruger and Kiernan Shipka. He co-starred in the Fox sci-fi series Next and recurred as Xavier Castillo on Shonda RhimesABC drama How To Get Away With Murder.

Gerardo Celasco to Star in Quibi’s Drama Series “Swimming with Sharks”

The 37-year-old Salvadoran American actor has been cast opposite Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger in Quibi’s drama series Swimming with Sharks.

Billed as a contemporary update of George Huang’s 1994 film that both celebrates and skewers the Hollywood studio system, the Lionsgate-produced series is written and produced by Kathleen Robertson, and directed by Tucker Gates, with Chris Cowles also producing.

In the series adaptation with a female twist, Lou (Shipka), a young female assistant, works for Joyce (Kruger), a sole female studio head, at a company filled with manipulators, schemers and intrigue, but little do they know Lou is poised to outwit them all.

Celasco will play Miles, a moderately talented artist and the husband of Joyce Holt (the big moneymaker in the household). Miles and Joyce have a complicated relationship based on love, money and power.

Celasco, who rose to acclaim on NBC’s Passions, co-stars in the upcoming Foxthriller series neXt. He’s known for his multi-season arc on ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder

Plaza Wins Young Hollywood Award

Aubrey Plaza is having a breakthrough year…

The 27-year-old half-Puerto Rican actress/comedian—who stars as April Ludgate in NBC’s Parks and Recreation, received the Breakthrough Performance Female award at the 2012 Young Hollywood Awards, which celebrate rising stars in movies, television, music and beyond.

While accepting her award, Plaza—known for her deadpan delivery on Parks and Recreation—declared that she was “never going to die.”

Plaza has also starred in Funny People and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

Meanwhile, Modern Family’s Rico Rodriguez and claimed the Scene Stealers award.

The 13-year-old Latino child actor shared the prize with his Modern Family co-star Nolan Gould and Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, who plays the scarily mature Sally Draper.
