Morrison Discusses English-Language Single “The Truth” at LAMC Conference

She’s best known for Spanish-language songs like “Déjenme Llorar” and “Compartir”… But the truth is Carla Morrison has a new single en ingles that’s just as memorable.

The 26-year-old Mexico-born alt-rock singer-songwriter, a two-time Latin Grammy winner, took part in the 14th edition of the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) this week in New York.

Carla Morrison

“It’s not always about the song,” Morrison declared during the “DIY 2.0” panel, referring to the use of social media.

Morrison, known for pop songs with some bite, recently recorded her first English-language song as a soloist and released it without telling many people.

During her most recent tour Morrison has been performing “The Truth” and her die-hard fans seem to be appreciating the love ballad, which features the ukulele.

“If I had told my managers about the song they would probably have come up with some kind of strategy in releasing it,” Morrison said, who instead wanted to keep her new musical inspiration low-key.

While it’s still unclear if Morrison will record an all-English album, she’s definitely interested in exploring the idea.

Morrison performed a short set at the LAMC Acoustic Showcase at S.O.B.’s on Thursday night, with Astro, Alex Anwandter, Torreblanca, Catupecu Manchu, Sol Fernandez, Mitre, Ulises Hadjis and Viniloversus also performing.

A much fuller show featuring Morrison and her band was scheduled to take place on Saturday, from 3 to 7 p.m., at the LAMC/Central Park SummerStage Show at Rumsey Playfield entrance (72nd Street and 5th Avenue).

Saturday’s lineup also includes Julieta Venegas and Anwandter, while Morrison plans to perform “The Truth.”

Venegas Hosts Buenos Aires’ Bookstore Night

It shouldn’t come as a surprise if Julieta Venegas is curling up with a good book this Sunday…

The 42-year-old Mexican singer on Saturday night hosted the 6th Buenos Aires Bookstore Night, a celebration of books and their authors.

Julieta Venegas
Along with serving as the host, Venegas performed for an estimated audience of 40,000 at the literary event, organized by the Buenos Aires municipal government, on Corrientes Street, which runs through the cultural heart of the Argentine capital.

The evening’s program includes such noted authors as Ernesto Mallo, Gabriel Rolon, Claudia Piñero and Sergio Olguin, along with musicians, illustrators and artists.

Numerous bookstores also organized poetry readings and storytelling events, while the group Siempre de Viaje-Literatura en Progreso  has organized what it refers to as “literary bicycling.”

“Buenos Aires is one of the cities with the most bookstores per capita in the world,” the capital’s culture minister, Hernan Lombardi, said at the inauguration of Bookstore Night.

Lombardi also said that the Argentine capital “cultivates reading and creativity as one of its most symbolic activities.”

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, designated Buenos Aires as World Book Capital 2011, citing the quality of its programs to promote book distribution, promote reading and grow the publishing industry.

“Hecho En México” Documentary Opens in Los Angeles

It could be called “From México with Love”…

Duncan Bridgeman’s latest film, Hecho En México, opened this weekend in Los Angeles, the U.S. market with the largest Mexican-American population.

Hecho en Mexico

The documentary, composed of original songs and insights from the most iconic artists and performers of contemporary Mexico, captures the rich diversity of Mexican geography, art, music and culture.

Hecho En México features appearances by noted Mexican artists and musicians like Diego Luna, Alejandro Fernandez, Carla Morrison, Chavela Vargas, Lila Downs, Natalia Lafourcade, Julieta Venegas and Gloria Trevi.

It’s described as a rare look at the country’s real identity, and an unparalleled celebration of what it truly means to be “Hecho en Mexico.”

The documentary “spans across genres of Mexican music and it’s something that has been well-received outside Mexican culture itself,” says Pantelion Films’ Edward Allen.

The film has already performed strongly in Mexico, where it was released two months ago.

“To reach the Latino audience [in the United States], we’ve been going through Univision and the Latin Grammys, which is one of [the network’s] biggest shows,” said Allen. “Artist Lila Downs performed at the show that’s also in the documentary and re-created the piece visually. That was our kickoff in the U.S. and we’ve been supporting the release via Univision both locally and nationally.”

Following this weekend’s opening in Los Angeles, Hecho En México will head to 15-20 additional cities in the coming weeks.
