Carey Leads This Season’s Inaugural Billboard Holiday Songs Chart

It appears that Americans wouldn’t ring in the holiday season without Mariah Carey

The annual Billboard Holiday Songs chart has returned this week, with the 42-year-old part-Venezuelan singer’s 1994 instaclassic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” topping the inaugural chart this season.

Carey’s Christmas carol led the list for four of the five weeks in which the tally was tabulated a year ago.

This week, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” managed to log 20 million in radio audience in the current chart’s tracking week, ranking at No. 6 on the Holiday Airplay ranking. Meanwhile, the song rules the Holiday Digital Songs chart with 27,000 downloads sold (up 112%).

Meanwhile, Jose Feliciano‘s bilingual classic “Feliz Navidad” ranks at No. 8 on this week’s Holiday Songs chart.

The Holiday Songs chart ranks the most popular seasonal songs, according to all-format audience impressions measured by Nielsen BDS, sales data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan and streaming activity data from online music sources tracked by BDS.

Feliciano to Record Elvis-Tribute Album

He recently joined voices with Jencarlos Canela to release a Spanish version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”… And, now Jose Feliciano is preparing to tackle the music of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The 66-year-old Puerto Rican singer-songwriter will release an entire album dedicated to Elvis Presley.

Jose Feliciano

In an interview with Efe, the legendary “Feliz Navidad” singer decided to record the new album because he’d followed Presley’s music since he was 11, while living in New York after his parents moved there from Lares, Puerto Rico.

Feliciano, who says he’s recorded eight of the 12 songs on the album in the studio at his home, says he also identified with Presley because both were born in poverty.

While living in the Big Apple, Feliciano became an Elvis fan without forgetting his roots. He still loved the music of Puerto Rican artists like Tito Rodriguez, Davilita, Felipe Rodriguez and Johnny Albino.

“I have a tremendous musical education because I listened to all of those together,” said Feliciano, who recently performed at the celebration of Presley’s birth in Memphis.

In addition, Feliciano said he was “happy” to receive the San Sebastian National Prize this past Thursday in Old San Juan “for his musical career on the world level for more than five decades.”

Canela & Feliciano Join Voices for “Aleluya”…

Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has been released as an official cover by some 200 artists in various languages… And, now Jencarlos Canela is lending his voice to the song, with an assist from a living legend.

The 23-year-old Cuban-American singer/actor has released a Spanish version of “Hallelujah” with the one-and-only José Feliciano, along with a video of the two performing the song in Miami.

“For me, it’s an honor that the master José Feliciano has me given the opportunity to record a duet with him,” says Canela, who is best known for playing the lead in the telenovelas Más Sabe el Diablo and Mi Corazón Insiste. “It;s a dream come true. Everyone has listened to the music of this talented man who is considered a musical legend. I hope the public will enjoy it as much as we have.”

Entitled “Aleluya,” the acoustic version of the hymn captures the heartfelt message about celebrating life. The video is quite moving, showcasing Canela and the 66-year-old Puerto Rican legend strumming their guitars.

The single will be the official anthem for the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the group’s efforts to help child refugees in Haiti. Canela is an official spokesperson for the organization and had lent his voice to the cause.

A “Feliz Navidad” with Thalía & Michael Bublé…

Christmas may be weeks away, but why not start getting into the holiday spirit now with a little help from Latin singing sensation Thalía and  Michael Bublé.

A "Feliz Navidad" with Thalía & Michael Bublé...

The 40-year-old Mexican singer/actress has partnered with Bublé to record Puerto Rican singer-songwriter José Feliciano’s instant-classic holiday tune “Feliz Navidad”—one of the most downloaded and played Christmas songs in the U.S. and Canada.

In Thalía and Bublé’s spirited version of “Feliz Navidad,” the arrangement starts with a few lines from another song, “Mis Deseos,” before the pair starts in on Feliciano’s classic. Thalia and Bublé alternate singing lines—in English and Spanish—before joining voices on the up-tempo chorus.

The duet is featured on the 36-year-old Canadian crooner’s new holiday album, “Christmas,” which was released this week.

So what do you think of Thalia & Bublé’s take on “Mis Deseos/Feliz Navidad”?
