The Late Jerry Garcia & His Grateful Dead Band Mates Named MusiCares’ 2025 Persons of the Year

The late Jerry Garcia is getting a special posthumous honor…

The half-Spanish American singer/songwriter/guitarist and his Grateful Dead band mates have been named as the 2025 Persons of the Year by MusiCares, with the band’s original members due to be feted at the organization’s annual gala concert and dinner on January 31, two days prior to the Grammys.

Jerry GarciaThe honor will effectively kick off what may turn out to be a yearlong celebration of the 60th anniversary of the group’s founding. As always, the fundraiser for this charitable arm of the Recording Academy will culminate in a series of all-star performances covering the honoree’s catalog.

The evening will take place in its usual location in a vast ballroom at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

In the 33-year history of MusiCares events, this marks only the third time that a superstar group has been selected for the honor instead of an individual. The previous bands chosen were Fleetwood Mac in 2018 and Aerosmith in 2020.

It’s the first time that someone no longer among the living will be officially celebrated as part of the tribute. Garcia, who died in 1995 at the age of 53, will get his posthumous due during the evening, along with the four living Dead members from the original lineup — Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bobby Weir.

Grateful Dead, Jerry GarciaThe four musicians have played in spinoff groups since Garcia’s passing, with Weir and Hart continuing to be active as mainstays of Dead & Company.

That outfit officially retired from touring after a 2023 outing, but went on to play a ravenously well-received residency at Sphere in Las Vegas from May through August of this year.

Fans are hoping for a return engagement or some other live commemoration in the coming year to help mark the 60th anniversary of the Grateful Dead.

Don Was, who just served as musical director of last week’s Robbie Robertson tribute at the Kia Forum, will take up MD duties again for this event. Returning as producers are Lewis & Clark, a live event broadcast outfit made up of Joe Lewis and R.A. Clark.

Laura Segura, executive director of MusiCares, said in a statement that the Dead’s legacy “transcends music, having built a community of fans and collaborators that embody the spirit of connection and support, something that is deeply aligned with MusiCares’ mission.

The band’s passion for the arts and philanthropy, along with their enduring commitment to social causes, has made a lasting impact that goes beyond the stage. It is a privilege to celebrate their contributions to both music and humanity.”

The Dead will be following in the footsteps of MusiCares’ 2024 honoree, Jon Bon Jovi, and a three-decade-long list of previous recipients that includes Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand, Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Bono, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Billy Joel, Sting, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young and Paul Simon.

Hart, Kreutzmann, Lesh and Weir collectively issued a statement that said in part, “We are deeply honored to be recognized as MusiCares Persons of the Year. This honor is truly a testament to the legacy of the music, which has always been bigger than us — it’s about the connection between us, the crew, and all those who’ve been on this long strange trip. It’s not just about what we create, but about making sure the people behind it, behind us every night, the ones who quietly make it all happen, get the support they need to keep going, no matter what life throws at them. We’re grateful to stand with MusiCares and hope everyone continues to support this vital mission to ensure music thrives in perpetuity.”

MusiCares cited the group’s charitable efforts as one reason for their selection, noting how “Garcia’s involvement with the Rex Foundation, Hart’s work in music therapy and brain health, Weir’s advocacy for addressing climate change and combating poverty, Kreutzmann’s ocean conservation efforts, and Lesh’s Unbroken Chain Foundation underscore the band’s commitment to making a difference beyond the stage.”

MusiCares’ mission is to offer musicians in need a network of preventive, emergency and recovery programs.

Indican Pictures Acquires North American Rights to Rosario Dawson’s Youth Homelessness Doc “Lost in America”

Rosario Dawson is ready to shine a greater spotlight on youth homelessness in the U.S. in theaters around the country.

Indican Pictures has acquired the North American distribution rights to the documentary Lost in America, executive produced by the 40-year-old Puerto Rican and Cuban American actress/activist and Jewel.

Rosario Dawson

Directed by Rotimi Rainwater, the documentary feature is the first film to take a national look at the issue of youth homelessness in America, highlighting the main issues that surround it: sex trafficking, the failure of the foster care system, and the rampant rejection of LGBTQ youth.

The doc is slated for a theatrical release in November.

Lost In America follows director Rainwater, a former homeless youth, on his six-year journey to shine a light on the issue of youth homelessness.

The film features interviews with more than 30 youth in 15 cities, as well as politicians and public figures including Tiffany HaddishHalle Berry, Jon Bon JoviMiley CyrusSanaa Lathan,Rebecca Gayheart-Dane

The film gives an unflinching, honest look at what these youth have to endure just to survive, and why as a nation, this is one epidemic we just didn’t see coming. It also examines what many organizations and politicians are doing (or not doing) to help these youth in order to answer one major question:   how, in the wealthiest country in the world, can 4.2 million youth experience homelessness every year?

“It took me 25 years to talk about my time on the streets, and this film is the result of my six-year journey to not only reconcile what I went through, and to hopefully help ensure that no other youth have to experience being homeless,” said Rainwater. “I am humbled and honored that it will finally be coming out. And I hope that it helps educate Americans to the truth of youth homelessness, and helps engage and enrage all of us to be a voice for those who truly need one.”

Rotimi is a writer-director and producer known for his narrative feature Sugar which was loosely based on his time on the streets. After screening the film for homeless youth organizations around the country, and even for Congress, Rotimi was inspired to make Lost In America.

“This is not just a film, it’s a call to action. This represents our chance to give those left on the streets a fighting chance to simply live a humane life,” said Randolph Kret,CEO and founder of Indican Pictures. “The first step is creating ongoing awareness, and Lost in America marks this first step.”

Rosario Dawson to Appear in the Homeless Youth Documentary “Lost in America”

Rosario Dawson is raising awareness about homeless youth.

The 38-year-old Puerto Rican and Cuban American actress and activist will appear in the upcoming documentary about homeless youth called Lost in America, executive-produced by Miley Cyrus and Russell Simmons.

Rosario Dawson

Dawson will appear in the Rotimi Rainwater-directed film alongside Cyrus, Halle Berry, Jewel, Jon Bon Jovi, Sanaa Lathan and Rebecca Gayheart-Dane.

“I never thought in my wildest dreams that we would get this many people to shine a light on youth homelessness,” says Rainwater, who himself was a former homeless youth. “It’s phenomenal but also truly needed to make others aware of the problem.”

He noted that about 5,000 youth die each year on American streets from homelessness. “That’s 13 who die every day. It’s like Columbine happening every single day.”

Las Vegas will be the host town for Intersections: The 2017 Southern Nevada Youth Homelessness Summit taking place Nov. 2 and Lost In America’s Rainwater will be speaking. It’s being sponsored by Las Vegas Sands Corp. and the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.

Lost in America follows the four-year journey of Rainwater and his team as they interviewed more than 30 youth in 15 cities, from the drainage tunnels of Denver to the streets of Orlando, you can continue reading about how it can be helpful – where Rainwater lived homeless for almost a year after getting discharged from the Navy to take care of his mother who was battling cancer.

While growing up in New York City, Dawson’s mother moved the family into an abandoned building, a squat on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where she and her husband renovated an apartment and installed the plumbing and electrical wiring for the building, creating affordable housing where Rosario and Clay would grow up. Dawson has cited this part of her history when explaining how she learned that, “If you wanted something better, you had to do it all yourself.”

Lopez to Perform at Hillary Clinton “Love Trumps Hate” Event in Miami

Jennifer Lopez is stumping for Hillary Clinton

Despite Donald Trump’s downward spiral in the polls, the Democratic presidential candidate is calling on some big names to help sway undecided voters in key battleground states.

Jennifer Lopez

The campaign announced a series of events dubbed “Love Trumps Hate” that will feature performances by the 46-year-old Puerto Rican singer/actress, Katy Perry and Jon Bon Jovi, among others.

According to the campaign scheduling siteBon Jovi is slated to perform in Pittsburgh on October 27 and Tampa on November 5, while Lopez will be in Miami on October 29; no additional event details have been announced.

“The performance series will feature a number of artists performing in battleground states who will energize our supporters and encourage them to turn out to vote on Election Day or to take advantage of early voting options in their states,” said Clinton’s campaign via press release. More performances will be announced in the coming days.

The phrase “love trumps hate” was used by Clinton during her primetime address at the Democratic National Convention in July.

The announcement explained that the performances will also serve as a recruiting opportunity to find new volunteers for the home stretch of the campaign.

“In the final weeks of the campaign, what voters will hear from these performers and all HFA surrogates is that Hillary Clinton has the experience and steadiness to bring people together and get real results,” the statement continued. “The choice in this election is clear. We can either come together to tackle the big challenges facing the country or let Donald Trump keep tearing us apart with his divisive rhetoric and dangerous ideas. That’s why millions of people are coming together to support Hillary Clinton and send a clear message that ‘love trumps hate.’”
